The 2015 iCAP, chapter 5, objective 6, is "Investigate the water quality impacts of stormwater runoff and potential ways to reduce stormwater pollutant discharges by FY18." Stormwater can transport pollutants on the ground to storm drains, where they eventually pollute our creeks and rivers. The University has a Storm Water Management Program to minimize such pollution. This iCAP objective focuses primarily on the more urbanized areas of campus, such as those areas in the University District. The iCAP objective 7.6 is more focused on stormwater impacts from the agricultural areas on campus.
The University’s Stormwater Management Program has six elements that are meant to reduce pollutants discharged into receiving water bodies to the maximum extent practicable (MEP), protect water quality, and satisfy the appropriate water quality requirements of the Clean Water Act. The elements are Public Education and Outreach, Public Involvement/ Participation, Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination, Construction Site Runoff Control, Post-Construction Runoff Control, and Pollution Prevention/Good Housekeeping.
Each year the University makes a significant effort to substantially complete best management practices (BMPs) for each of the elements. However, the extent of campus stormwater impacts on surface water quality is not well understood. Thus, the impact of stormwater discharges on water quality should be investigated along with the impact of different strategies for reducing pollutant discharges.
