  2. eGen010 Geothermal Feasibility Study - Successful

    Following the completion of iWG assessment for EGEN010 Geothermal Feasibility Study, the recommendation was transmitted back to the Energy SWATeam to conduct additional analysis and investigation of current campus geothermal efforts.

  3. eGen010 Geothermal Feasibility Study - Submittal

    The eGen SWATeam submitted a recommendation to the iWG, proposing that the university "Enter into a contract with an engineering firm to evaluate
    the feasibility of implementing geothermal energy technologies in future new construction and retrocomissioning of buildings on the UIUC campus."

    An iCAP Working Group assessment of this recommendation began on June 7, 2019.

  4. Trans006 Differential Parking Pricing for Shared Vehicles recommendation - Returned to the SWATeam

    The iCAP Working Group (iWG) met on February 16, 2016, to discuss the SWATeam recommendation, Trans006 Differential Parking Pricing for Shared Vehicles. The iWG's final comment was:

    "Study to determine if differential pricing for campus parking will encourage car sharing.The study of the parking pricing structure and alternatives for changing it can be very complex and involve a lot of issues. Have they addressed this in their recent Parking Master Plan effort? It was suggested to add Brian Farber from Parking to the Transportation SWATeam and examine what has been addressed in their Master Plan, before undertaking this study."

    Following the iWG meeting, this recommendation was returned to the Transportation SWATeam for further discussion within the SWATeam.

  5. Trans006 Differential Parking Pricing for Shared Vehicles recommendation - Submittal

    The Transportation SWATeam submitted a recommendation to the iWG stating,

    "Differential parking pricing for shared vehicles. One identified venue to encourage car sharing among faculty/staff and students is via differential pricing of campus parking permits. The basic idea is to sell parking permits at different prices for different lots, different vehicle types, and different users. The spots in the popular lots shall be sold at higher prices, while those sharing cars (i.e., two or more persons purchasing one permit for one vehicle) or using low-emission vehicles shall receive discounts and/or priority for getting into a popular lot. It is proposed that a study could be performed in two phases, as follows:

    Phase I: Feasibility study that
    1. Conducts a series of surveys to (i) understand the attitude of the parking department, current users, and the general public toward the proposed differential pricing scheme; and (ii) collect information on the campus commute patterns (single vehicle vs. carpool vs. CUMTD transit, origin/destinations, and vehicle types).
    2. Collects data on campus parking capacity, utilization pattern, and demand profile.
    3. Develops statistical/econometric models based on the collected data to inform us about the likelihood for users to adapt their vehicle usage and parking preferences in the context of parking price change.

    Phase II: Pilot implementation study that
    4. Evaluates the effectiveness of differential pricing on enhancing parking capacity utilization and reducing single-occupancy vehicle usage, with possible field implementation on a small scale.

  6. Bike Sharing Feasibility Study

    This proposal seeks to conduct a feasibility study off different options for implementing a bike-sharing program at the University of Illinois. A feasibility study for this project is a necessary step before implementation of a campus bike sharing project can be considered, in line with the Illinois Climate Action Plan. University bike-sharing programs exist in different forms across the country and the challenge is finding a model that will be highly used by students as well as being mostly self-sustaining. Committee funds will be used to support a half-time summer intern as well as for other expenses relevant to the study, with any unspent funds held for implementation of improvements to campus bicycle parking infrastructure. The Student Sustainability Committee is in favor of funding a grant in the amount of $10,000.

  7. Solar Feasibility Study

    This proposal seeks to develop a list of campus buildings capable of hosting solar energy systems and conducting a detailed feasibility evaluation of five sites for installation of these systems.  Solar energy systems may be utilized for the generation of electricity or for the production of hot water for domestic use, and this study will examine both possibilities. Factors taken into account will be the building’s energy use profile and applications, the building characteristics, the surrounding environment, and the visibility to the student body. Additionally, the report will specify equipment and budget needs, as appropriate to prepare the projects for bid and implementation. Solar energy systems larger than those at the University of Illinois exist at over 70 institutions and the University has made a commitment to obtain 5% of total energy from renewable sources from 2015 and 25% by 2025, which will require the installation of solar energy systems on campus. Significant benefits to our education, research and outreach missions are also likely from these installations. Finally, the completion of this feasibility study will help enable the actual installation of these arrays as well as secure matching funds from sources such as the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The Student Sustainability Committee is in favor of funding a grant in the amount of $9,900.

  8. Composting Feasibility Study

    This proposal seeks to complete a feasibility study re: composting of campus food waste. The scope of work for this study includes evaluation of proposed composting sites and identification of the optimal location, specification of necessary site improvements, verification of analysis regarding program size and logistics and development of a program plan with capital equipment needs. This study will enable establishment of a food-waste program that will divert ~600 tons of foodwaste from the landfill annually (and accompanying methane and CO2 emissions), in support of the Illinois Climate Action Plan, and campus waste reduction goals. This project is also being supported by $7,400 funding from the Office of Sustainability. The Student Sustainability Committee is in favor of funding a grant in the amount of $15,000.
