  1. Water002 Cooling Tower Increase COC recommendation - Submittal

    The Water and Stormwater SWATeam submitted a recommendation to the iWG stating,

    "We recommend that a small tonnage (< 700 tons cooling capacity) stand-alone cooling tower on campus operating at a water concentration cycle of less than 2.5 be operated using softened water under high pH/high silica conditions to demonstrate near zero blowdown operation."

  2. Water001 BIF Greywater Meter recommendation - Submittal

    The Water and Stormwater SWATeam submitted a recommendation to the iWG stating, 

    "Monitoring the water usage in the Business Instructional Facility (BIF). Specifically, both the total water use and the amount of water used by the raw water system should be measured and the data made available to the campus community.

    BIF is unique in that it was constructed with a separate raw water system that conveys non-potable water to be used for purposes such as flushing toilets. While the system is in place inside the building, it was never connected to an outside source of non-potable water. Use of non-potable water for purposes such as toilet flushing, landscape irrigation, cooling, etc. is recognized as a sustainable practice (e.g., Asano et al, 2007; EPA, 2012). Data to quantify the impact this could have on water use at UIUC, however, is largely unavailable. Metering the raw water system at BIF would provide data about the temporal total and non-potable water demand at a typical campus class/office building. These data would be valuable to consider whether such systems should be considered in future campus construction and renovation.

    F&S installed a temporary meter to measure the flow to the raw water system and operated this meter for approximately one month (April – May 2016), so this recommendation has already been demonstrated to be feasible. However, because building usage is highly variable over the course of an academic year, we recommend that this should be a permanent installation. We also recommend that the data be made available to the campus community to encourage consideration of such water reuse options."

  3. ECONS004 Green Labs Coordinator Recommendation - Submittal

    The ECBS SWATeam submitted a recommendation to the iWG stating, "The ECBS SWATeam recommends funding a full-time Green Labs Coordinator position. The coordinator would implement, with the help of students, a Green Labs Program. Major components of the program would include energy conservation through analysis of fume hood usage (needs and possible consolidation), a Shut the Sash fume hood initiative, freezer and refrigerator management, space efficiency and utilization, water conservation, recycling (e.g., batteries, Styrofoam) and collaboration and education of effective energy efficiency and sustainable methods for management of lab chemicals and hazardous waste disposal."

  4. PWR007 Dump and Run recommendation - Submittal

    The PWR SWATeam submitted a recommendation stating, "We recommend a campus stakeholder lead an effort to expand and improve the effort to capture items during Move Out – collaborating with the YMCA on the Dump & Run. This action includes filling gaps in staff & volunteer coordination, campus space coordination, and facilitating vehicles and staff time to run them."

  5. EGen003 PPA term recommendation - Assessment with all comments

    The iCAP Working Group (iWG) met on March 30th, 2016, to discuss the recommendation EGen003 PPA Term and started the assessment. iWG's official recommendation was:

    "We understand that the University is currently advocating for state legislative relief from a number of procurement-related restrictions, and we recommend that the University include in this effort a request to eliminate the 10-year limit on Power Purchase Agreements. If successful, this would allow (but not require) our campus and Prairieland Energy, Inc. to enter into long-term Power Purchase Agreements for renewable energy (including electricity and other renewable fuels) which may offer more favorable terms, perhaps even being less expensive than traditional energy options."

  6. Trans005 Travel Demand Analysis recommendation - Returned to the SWATeam

    The iCAP Working Group (iWG) met on February 16, 2016, to discuss the SWATeam recommendation, Trans005 Travel Demand Analysis. The iWG's final comment was:

    "What would be the end result? There are many reasons to travel, some are optional and some are not. For example, junior faculty who are working on tenure need to network and engage with other experts in their area. Other times, it may be sufficient to conduct business or the meeting virtually. This is more of a sociological study, maybe a student in the Sociology department can help.  Jess Tang will work with the SWATeam to see if this is plausible."

    Following the iWG meeting, this recommendation was returned to the Transportation SWATeam for further discussion within the SWATeam.

  7. Trans006 Differential Parking Pricing for Shared Vehicles recommendation - Returned to the SWATeam

    The iCAP Working Group (iWG) met on February 16, 2016, to discuss the SWATeam recommendation, Trans006 Differential Parking Pricing for Shared Vehicles. The iWG's final comment was:

    "Study to determine if differential pricing for campus parking will encourage car sharing.The study of the parking pricing structure and alternatives for changing it can be very complex and involve a lot of issues. Have they addressed this in their recent Parking Master Plan effort? It was suggested to add Brian Farber from Parking to the Transportation SWATeam and examine what has been addressed in their Master Plan, before undertaking this study."

    Following the iWG meeting, this recommendation was returned to the Transportation SWATeam for further discussion within the SWATeam.

  8. Trans007 Campus fleet analysis and Planning recommendation - Returned to SWATeam

    The iCAP Working Group (iWG) met on February 16, 2016, to discuss the SWATeam recommendation, Trans007 Campus Fleet Analysis and Planning. The iWG's final comment was:

    "They have suggested that this analysis is ideally completed by an industry professional. The iWG recommends that this study can be broken down into phases where phase 1 could be done by students, and phase 2 then could be done by an outside consultant (industry expert). Ben will suggest this to the SWATeam."

    Following the iWG meeting, this recommendation was returned to the Transportation SWATeam for further discussion and modification to the recommendation within the SWATeam.

  9. EGen003 PPA term recommendation - Submittal

    The eGen SWATeam submitted a recommendation to the iWG stating, "Take steps to allow a Power Purchase Agreement for electricity without any restriction on the term of the agreement."
