Advance Student Sustainability Outreach Efforts (Ongoing)

Recent Project Updates

Description

The 2015 iCAP, chapter 11, objective 1 is, "Support and communicate about co-curricular student sustainability programs." Illinois is home to more than 20 sustainability student organizations. These student organizations meet monthly under the umbrella of the Student Sustainability Leadership Council (SSLC). The SSLC is a place for student leaders to interact and collaborate, along with representatives from the iSEE, serving as a two-way conduit of information and concerns about campus sustainability issues.

Background

SSLC plays the role of activism in campus sustainability to support, encourage and initiate plans to the sustainability organizations. It also provides a networking platform to connect sustainable students groups and hear their voice in the decisions being made about improving campus sustainability. There are currently 20 organizations with representatives attending the SSLC monthly meeting, such as U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and Students for Environmental Concerns (SECS). The meeting typically discusses the goal for the year, the current sustainability activities and programs, and the plan and directions.    Other than SSLC, the multitude of student groups offer events throughout the year, for their group members or wider audiences. For example, organizations can make them known and get people involved by having a stand on QUAD Day. Also, Film Screening related to sustainability can be used to advocate and improve the awareness of sustainability. These events are generally well-attended and they should be encouraged. Campus will continue to support these events, with administrative assistance from iSEE. iSEE staff also help with arranging rooms, communicating about upcoming events, and sharing success stories with campus administration. Students can request iSEE’s assistance by emailing to sustainability@illinois.edu.
