ECBS SWATeam Meeting Minutes
Associated Project(s):The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) is looking to become more involved with the SWATeams and sustainability on campus. ECBS proposed ideas such as decreasing refrigerator usage, making a climate action plan specifically for DIA, and promoting recycling at tailgates. Illini Lights Out had their first event on September 29, and it was a success. 284 light switches were turned off in 13 different buildings. The Green Labs Coordinator position is slowly making progress, but there is a concern with funding. Updates on the ECIP were made, and there is a push being made for mid-year checkpoints in the future. ECBS also discussed if AFMFA projects could be redefined in order to do more maintenance-based projects.

Associated Project(s):Battery recycling instructions were updated to indicate that "University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign" should be included in address information provided to Call2Recycle. The inclusion will allow for reporting of volumes of batteries recycled through the program across the campus.

Call To Recycle Program Results

Follow-up on instructions for F&S page
Associated Project(s):Updated instructions for battery recycling were sent today so that the F&S page can be updated with current program information.
Follow up on "parent ID" question
Associated Project(s):The "parent" ID number for Call2Recycle should no longer be used. It was used for tracking payment as well as shipping addresses, and continued use could result in battery collection boxes being shipped to the wrong location on campus. Unfortunately, dropping the ID number means that we won't be able to obtain centralized reports of volumes of recycled batteries.

Associated Project(s):[Did not preserve the previous version of the first paragraph, to which minor updates were made to indicate that boxes are for a mix of single-use and rechargeable batteries and that participating units must pay Call2Recycle.]
Call2Recycle accepts all rechargeable batteries that weigh less than 11 pounds, including Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-Ion), Nickel Zinc (Ni-Zn) and Small Sealed Lead Acid (SSLA/ Pb) batteries. Individual batteries must have their terminals taped or be bagged before being placed in the Call2Recycle boxes. Leaking batteries are not accepted, and should be disposed of through the Division of Research Safety (217-333-2755).
To start the program in your office:
1. Visit the Call2Recycle website at http://www.call2recycle.org/ and join the free rechargeable battery recycling program. Call2Recycle will follow up with a return phone call to you. When you receive this call, please provide them with the University of Illinois’s Parent ID #78151.
2. Call2Recycle will send the collection boxes with UPS shipping labels directly to your building. When you first start the program, please notify F&S Waste Management at 244-7283.
3. When a box is full of individually bagged rechargeable batteries, check to ensure that only acceptable batteries are in the box.
4. Write down the box’s UPS tracking number and then place the full box at a UPS pickup location. UPS will pick the box up free of charge at the time of their next scheduled delivery. UPS will ship the full box of batteries to a metal reclamation center for processing.
5. Call2Recycle will automatically send you new empty boxes with UPS shipping labels.
Battery recycling participation instructions updated in iCAP; F&S page updates pending
Associated Project(s):Instructions for units that want to provide battery recycling have been updated on the appropriate iCAP Portal pages, with a detail regarding the provision of a "parent ID number" to Call2Recycle still pending. Once that detail has been confirmed, iCAP Portal instructions will be updated again if necessary, and instructions on the F&S page will be updated.

Associated Project(s):The PWR SWATeam submitted a recommendation to the iWG stating, "The campus should continue battery recycling. Whether this be department drive through the use of outside programs or a comprehensive effort, battery recycling should be a priority."

Associated Project(s):The Purhcasing, Waste, and Recycling SWAT Team met to disucss topics including the ethics compliance video and battery recyling. The SWAT Team decided on three recommendations to make to the Associate Director of Campus Sustainability, Ximing Cai. These reccomendations include:
1. Promoting the Ethics Compliance Video with a written summary
2. Implement the approved Paper Policy draft
3. Continue battery recycling on campus
The SWAT Team also discussed efforts to increase recycling/lower the use of paper on campus. One avenue the team considered is urging RSOs to use less paper to promote their activities during Quad Day.

Associated Project(s):Morgan Johnston and Shawna Grady met to discuss the potential uses for the Transportation Building's ECIP funding award ($10,000). Options included additional recycling bins, LED lamps, power strips, battery recycling containers, and potentially a waste characterization study for the building (if available through ISTC).
KCPA ECIP funds to go towards several improvements
Associated Project(s):Krannert Center has identified several projects to tackle with the ECIP award funding:
- Recycling Bins and Bags - $5,000 (make in-house recycling efforts more efficient and accessible)
- TCP Switch for Playhouse - $6,000 (electrical safety issue)
- Imop - $5,000 (water conservation)
- Food Services Dishwashers - $9,750 (energy efficiency, water conservation, chemical usage reduction)
- Energy efficient washer and dryers (2 each) for Festival Green Room - $2,250 (energy efficiency, water conservation)
- Ipad mini’s & Ipad & Secure Mounts for Attendant Access to Calendar and Event Sheets - $2,500 (reduce printed paper)
- Reconfigure Stairs to Playhouse Pit - $3,500 (safety issue correction)
The dollar amounts listed are approximations. Any additional funds not used for these items would be allocated to expanding the stock of replacement LED bulbs.
2016 Winners Announced!
Associated Project(s):The 2016 ECIP award winners were announced last Wednesday, and they will be given plaques at the annual Campus Sustainability Celebration this week, 10/16 from 4-6 at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center. Here is the letter.

We would like to recognize your unit as a 2016 Energy Conservation Incentive Program (ECIP) award winner during the Campus Sustainability Celebration on Wednesday, October 26 from 4-6 p.m. at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center. For planning purposes, please let us know who will be accepting the award(s) on behalf of your unit by Friday, October 21.
Sustainability initiatives are at the core of Illinois’ commitment to its land-grant university mission. The Climate Leadership Commitment pledges the Urbana campus to be carbon neutral by 2050, which requires all students, staff, and employees working together to implement a dynamic, multi-disciplinary approach to campus sustainability.
The ECIP awards began in 2013 as a way to recognize outstanding individual and team efforts that move us closer to reaching our Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP) goals. The ECIP honors occupants of campus buildings that have reduced energy at the greatest level from one year to the next. This year more than $177,000 for improvement projects in winning facilities will be provided through the program.
Everyone researching, learning, and working in these nine buildings is an ECIP winner, and we encourage as many participants to join the celebration as possible. Hosted by Facilities & Services and the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment, the Campus Sustainability Celebration will cover the iCAP objectives, celebrate the diverse sustainability community, and recognize 2016 winners.
We look forward to you and your employees joining us to celebrate the ECIP winners and their contributions toward campus energy conservation.

Associated Project(s):Facilities & Services has committed to funding a campus-wide battery recycling program, up to $10,000 per fiscal year. The program was launched in the Spring of 2012 with four locations on campus that accept specific types of rechargeable batteries as well as single-use alkaline batteries. Two vendors are used to collect and recycle the batteries: Call2Recycle, which accepts rechargeable batteries at no charge to the University; and Battery Solutions, which accepts single-use alkaline batteries and charges for collection.
Call2Recycle Program
Associated Project(s):F&S Environmental Compliance will no longer be tracking the total rechargeable battery recycling for campus. Individual departments can now work directly with Call2Recycle in order to recycle these rechargeable batteries.
ECBS Objective 4 Subcommittee Meeting Minutes
Associated Project(s):The ECBS Objective 4 Subcommittee met Tuesday, February 16 to continue fleshing out the ECBS SWATeam's fourth iCAP objective, which has to do with increasing campus engagement in sustainability. Discussion continued on ECIP and potential changes for the upcoming year- a major issue is raising awareness of this program and others like it. By the conclusion of the meeting, the focus of the subcommittee shifted to creating and sending recommendations to the iCAP Working Group, such as a Green Labs Initiative proposal as well as continuing Eco-Olympics or initiating a similar program that would serve as dorm resident engagement. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 23.
