In 2009, the University of Illinois completed an extensive visioning process that included input from a diverse set of stakeholders. The resulting document points to Grand Challenges that we will continually address through our sustainability efforts.  Devoted to the following goals, Illinois will become a world leader in creating new knowledge and innovative solutions.

    Grand Challenge 1:
Maintain or restore natural ecosystem function while providing essential human services.

    Grand Challenge 2:
To sustainably raise the quality of life for the world’s poor to acceptable levels.

    Unique Strengths of Illinois
During the visioning process, we saw more clearly our unique position as a campus that has strengths in water programs, agriculture, engineering, business, and information technology, to name a few.  A focus on the food/water/energy nexus emerged from this recognition, along with interest by our campus and community in working at the interface of these issues.

Center for the Advancement of Sustainability Innovations, U.S. Army
The CSE is tasked with expanding the strategic partnership between Illinois and the military around sustainability topics and research initiatives of mutual interest. The basis for the partnership was formalized in 2009 via a MOU with the Center for the Advancement of Sustainability Innovations (CASI) in the Office and the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), and University of Illinois, Board of Trustees via the CSE. The CSE and ERDC-CASI have pursued several areas of collaboration including the Sustainable Innovations seminar series.

The daily decisions that you make about how to travel, what to eat and drink, whether or not to recycle your trash, what to wear, and a myriad of other decisions all have an impact on the health of our planet. Wondering how your daily decisions could possibly affect the planet? After all, you are just one of 6.8 billion other people living on the planet. And that’s the point. The collective decisions of 6.8 billion people, whatever those decisions may be, will determine if we have enough resources to sustain the health and well-being of ourselves, future generations, and the other living creatures that share the Earth with us.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the surrounding communities have a lot to be proud of when it comes to sustainability. The resources listed in this section are just a sample of what our campus and community has to offer. To get you started, University of Illinois Extension has developed 57 Ways To Protect Your Home Environment.

American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) Pledge

On February 22, 2008, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign became a signatory to the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). We are currently one of more than six-hundred Colleges and Universities that are participating in this endeavor (see the University's official commitment pledge here (download as pdf).

As concern grows about global warming and the potential effects on health, social, economic, and ecological well-being of our world, the University is a prime place to be at the forefront of battling the negative impacts associated with climate change. The University of Illinois hosts high-caliber research and experts in diverse field across campus and seeks to become a model for not only the State of Illinois, but to become a leader in these efforts nationally and globally.

The ultimate goal of the ACUPCC is for campuses to go "climate neutral". During the first year of this commitment, a greenhouse gas emissions inventory was conducted and submitted to the ACUPCC.

Illinois submitted its Climate Action Plan in May 2010.  This plan sets aggressive goals for reaching carbon neutrality.  Facilities & Services is making great progress on the operational aspects of the plan, and the Office of Sustainability is working to connect educators and researchers to many projects associated with the plan.  Moving forward, Illinois will be required to submit updated greenhouse gas emissions inventories (2012) and progress reports(2013) on alternating years.  As reports become available, they will be shared with the public, both in this space as well as on the ACUPCC's website.

    Sustainability Task Forces

As a result of the Office of Sustainability’s 2008-2009 visioning process, implementation of programs that fulfill this vision became the focus for the Office of Sustainability.  To aid in the development of an implementation plan, three task forces were created that represented a diverse group of stakeholders.  Members of the task forces included faculty, students, staff and community members with expertise in a variety of disciplines.

    Forum Task Force

The Forum Task Force was charged to create a new forum for in-depth, cross-disciplinary engagement on the sustainability grand challenges.  The product of their work is a recurring offering of the Scholarship of Sustainability Series.  This Series began in the Spring of 2010 and is offered each spring. The Series is open to faculty, staff, students and the community at large. The Series provides an in-depth examination of sustainability issues, with readings and video available on-line.

    Operations Task Force

The Operations Task force was charged to create and implement a sustainable campus operations plan.  The committee’s efforts resulted in a comprehensive climate action plan that provides a path toward carbon neutrality by 2050.  The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was the first Big Ten University to submit a climate action plan to the ACUPCC.

    Education Task Force

The Education Task Force was charged to infiltrate sustainable thinking into campus missions through new education activities.  The Sustainability Education Task Force (SETF) created sustainability education outcomes to serve as a useful resource for enhancing campus course and program offerings related to sustainability. The SETF has also inventoried existing course and program offerings to publish as a guide and identified gaps that can be filled through partnerships with academic departments.

  11. Archived web info - CSE Vision page

An Excerpt from our Vision Statement

    Student Farm

In Fall of 2009 The Strategic Opportunity in Global Sustainability Challenges: A Vision for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was developed in a highly inclusive process that involved the surrounding communities.

The visioning process identified two global grand challenges for which Illinois is well positioned to be a leader:

    1) To maintain or restore natural ecosystem function while providing essential human services, and
    2) To sustainably raise the quality of life for the world’s poor to acceptable levels.

There are five goals associated with the vision:

    1) Create a new forum for in-depth, cross-disciplinary engagement on the sustainability grand challenges,
    2) Create and implement a sustainable campus operations plan that maintains or restores natural ecosystem, function and supports impoverished communities,
    3) Infiltrate sustainable thinking into campus missions through new education activities,
    4) Create incentive programs that spur sustainability activities to meet the above goals, and
    5) Create a viable financial plan for sustainability activities. Task Forces are currently identifying near term actions around goals 1–3, and helping to implement them.

Illinois is also committed to achieving responsibilities of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). Energy conservation has been an emphasis as part of the ACUPCC. For example, FY09 was only the second time in 20 years that campus electricity consumption dropped from one year to the next. The progress is attributed to a broadening campus conservation effort, including retrocommissioning, departmental and college reduction initiatives, reduced HVAC system operating hours, and the campus relamping program. Total energy consumed by the main campus at Urbana-Champaign dropped 6.5% in FY09 compared to FY08. Campus consumption is now nearly 10% lower than FY07 on a square foot basis. The FY09 energy reduction resulted in a budget savings of approximately $7.5 million. The goal for FY10 is another 5% reduction (i.e. 5% below FY09).

6:00-6:50: Craig Cox Senior Vice President of the Environmental Working Group will be at the Alice Campbell Hall to discuss how the elimination of direct payments to agriculture and their replacement with programs that provide revenue and price guarantees will affect taxpayers, farm income, and resource conservation.  He’ll explain how the recent Farm Bill fixed some glaring problems associated with crop insurance programs by establishing a quid pro quo between farmers and taxpayers by asking farmers to take steps to cut soil erosion on their most vulnerable cropland, protect wetlands and refrain from breaking out native grassland and prairie in return for crop insurance premium subsidies and other federal farm program benefits.  He will consider whether these provisions offer sufficient protection for working lands at a time when high crop prices, biofuel mandates and competition for land have spurred substantial intensification and expansion of row crop production that is tied to soil degradation, water pollution and loss of habitat.  Craig, who has spent his life working for conservation and worked on the last four farm bills, will discuss what will be needed to harmonize agriculture and the environment in this challenging century. If you’d like to meet with Craig during his visit contact mwander@illinois.edu.

3:30-5pm: Woody Perennial Polyculture Tour - Registration is required.
A Woody Perennial Polyculture (WPP) is an assemblage of plant species that aims to mimic the structure and function of natural ecosystems to sustainably produce an agricultural yield while simultaneously restoring ecosystem services. Rather than perpetuating the separation of nature and humans, this system attempts to break down the dichotomy between ecological restoration and agriculture. This concept has grown and evolved out of fields such as agroecology, agroforestry, permaculture, silvopasture, carbon farming, and ecological restoration, but the application of this paradigm to large-scale industrial agriculture is a relatively new idea. The WPP community studied at this research site is an example of such a system that has the potential to become an ecologically sound, agriculturally productive, and economically viable alternative to the corn-soybean rotation (Herbaceous Annual Monoculture) that currently dominates agriculture in the Midwestern U.S.
Location: The Woody Perennial Polyculture is located near the intersection of Lincoln and Windsor road.  We will provide transportation to and from the farm. Pickup and dropoff locations are:Lincoln Avenue Residence Hall (LAR), (circle drive) 1005 S. Lincoln Avenue, Urbana and Ikenberry Dining Hall, 301 E. Gregory Drive, Champaign.

NCSA, 1205 W. Clark, room 1040, Urbana, IL
Systems thinking, understanding the interconnections among environmental, social and economic components, is critical to advancing progress on sustainability challenges. Developing systems thinking requires a deep understanding of the complexity of sustainability issues that can only be gained by studying real-world situations. Helping students learn how to frame open-ended, real-world projects is challenging, and doing so within the context of scattered information and data from multiple community partners is even more so. This workshop will highlight approaches, successes, and learning lessons from a two-year effort to develop interdisciplinary project-based coursework in Champaign, Chicago, and Chennai, India. An online tool called Medici, developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications for sharing diverse data and information collections, will also be demonstrated. Opportunities for future class and research projects to build upon these data and information collections in the future will be explored with participants.

The University of Illinois Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture Program (ASAP)
will host a special symposium entitled "Understanding and Addressing the
    Anti-GE Critique."
"This year we decided our annual Earth Day event would attempt to answer students' questions about GE plants. Inquiring minds want to know what all the fuss is about," said Michelle Wander, symposium organizer, ASAP director, and professor in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. "Some believe GE plants are essential contributors to sustainable agriculture, enabling huge gains in productivity and efficiency by preventing pest problems and alleviating the need to treat them; others see GE as a technology that concentrates control of agriculture and reduces consumer choice, making us use more resources to achieve diminishing returns. We recognize that this is a complex subject and hope many views are shared," Wander said.
The event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required but is encouraged. To register, visithttp://asap2013.eventbrite.com. Presentations will be given by four speakers followed by a panel.

    12:00n-1:30pm - Permaculture a Dangerous Enterprise
    Illini Union, room 210
The presentation will be followed by questions and a 30 min reception
Mark Shepard farms and teaches in south western Wisconsin where he has been building a 106 acre permaculture paradise for over 15 years.  The farm is a diversified venture that is growing ideas and community culture along with a polyculture of plants, animals and enterprises.  Over 250,000 trees have been planted by the keyline technique in the beautiful coulee district of Wisconsin. Trees and market garden patches are planted on contour to retain water via a network of small pocket ponds and spreader swales that slow and spread rain water and protect the land from erosion.  His farm embodies the radical idea of managing a perennial food ECOLOGY, which means that all of the rules of ecology apply.  According to Mark “When conventional disturbance ceases, (stop the plow and herbicides) a site begins to aggrade... soil fertility increases, organic matter increases, soil life diversity increases, nutrient cycling improves, plant and animal populations and diversity increase.   Pests and diseases come into their "natural" population cycles and levels.  What ends up happening is that input costs (tillage, herbicide, fertilizer, pest control, disease control) decline. When your input costs approach zero, your net profitability increases”.  Mark is encouraging young farmers to contribute to this vision and he backs this up by supporting ‘collaborative enterprisers’.  Aspiring permaculture entrepreneurs learn through doing as they design and implement projects on the ground.   In his talk, Mark will explain how and why his permaculture paradise differs from traditional permaculture, how it is a force for good and, explain how he is spreading this dangerous idea through collaborative enterprisers.   Attend this event to learn about his edible woody crops nursery, and how growing trees shrubs, vines, and canes to produce food, medicines, fuels and fiber are revolutionizing agriculture in nature's image while simultaneously revitalizing culture, stabilizing the economy, and restoring the environment.

    Earth Week

Each year, our campus celebrates Earth Day with a week full of activities.  The Office of Sustainability collaborated with student groups in planning and organizing events for Earth Week 2011. The Earth Week celebration was intended to widen sustainable practice awareness to the campus community.  The events of the week showcased many organizations that promote sustainability, engaged students to be more involved in sustainable efforts, allowed students to use sustainability in their own lives and also included entertainment to celebrate Earth Day. Michael Ableman (Sustainable Canadian Farmer) visited campus to share his life experiences with the students and community.  The week included workshops, a clothing swap and an organization fair showcasing RSO’s and other units that practice sustainability.  Planning for Earth Week 2012 will begin during the fall semester.  Would you like to help?  Please let us know!

    2010 Sustainability Week

The highly attended Sustainability Week 2010 shed green light upon campus last week! The former president of Greenpeace USA, John Passacantando, and author Jeff Biggers inspired and informed students, faculty, and the community. Tours and workshops showcased some of the University’s most green spaces and initiatives, while local sustainable food events tickled our taste buds.

    Green light Let's GO

From October 25 – 29, 2010, the inaugural Sustainability Week shed green light upon campus movements and activities.  Students, faculty and the community attended. Chancellor Robert A. Easter showed his support for the week with his opening speech on Monday before introducing Jeff Biggers, author of "Reckoning at Eagle Creek, the Secret Legacy of Coal in the Heartland" kicked off the week on Monday with impassioned testimony revealing the tale of the destructive uprooting of natural habitats and families in Illinois throughout history by the coal industry. His theatrical performance had the audience pinned to their seats, appealing to various emotions. After, farmers from various counties, a representative of the Champaign County Board and the Prairie Rivers Network publically brainstormed ways to combat the potential depletion of the Mahomet aquifer, our main source of drinking water, by an incoming coal company from Carlisle, Indiana.

Thursday, John Passacantando, the former president of GreenPeace USA, met and interacted with students at a Q&A Workshop at the YMCA. Students voiced their confusions and concerns regarding environmental issues and "greenwashing"; Passacantando clarified the political hurdles and shortcomings of our system, shared his expertise and experience, and provided authentic and honest answers. Later, he presented an inspiring keynote address providing attendees with purposeful facts and lively anecdotes regarding his time as an environmental activist and leader of the largest environmental organization in the world. View videos from Keynote: Part 1 and Part 2

    In Good Green Graces

The week also showcased some of the University's most progressive green spaces; the Business Instructional Facility, the Student Sustainable Farm, Ikenberry Commons, the Art Annex, the Waste Transfer Station, theCampus Bike Plan, just to name a few.

The Common Ground Food Co-Op hosted a cooking class offering not only savory recipes, but also ones that cater to sustainability and budget constraints. The Sustainability Fair, held at the Union, boasted a mosaic of booths and tables explaining the latest news and accomplishments of organizations on campus and in the community. The Electric Vehicles Club showed off the newest cutting-edge models available, complete with friendly members providing information on safety, speed, and practicality.

The Finale Celebration, held on Friday at the Art East Annex 2, showcased the new dance floor, designed and built by architecture and dance students from the former IMPE Gym 4 floor before the ARC renovation. Chef Benjamin prepared a delectable variety of seasonal fall dishes using local foods. Guests enjoyed hors d'œuvres such as Curtis Apple Orchard and goat cheese crostinis, filet de boeuf with caramelized onions and bleu cheese, a bruschetta bar with fresh spreads, a pumpkin cheese ball with apple slices, chocolate truffles and hot apple cider as they awaited the raffle drawing. Prizes were distributed to 39 lucky winners, the grand prize being a freshly finished bike from the Campus Bike Project.

    Gear into Green

As the year continues, we all may find ourselves in a few traffic jams—juggling school, jobs, internships, activities and our general lives! Sustainability Week encouraged the community not to turn a blind eye to the environment in which we thrive. Keep in mind the processes behind being able to fuel up your car, take a shower, heat your room, and drink clean water. Keep track of the actions institutions like the University of Illinois take to preserve our environment. And most importantly, do your part. Get informed. Get involved. The light is green!
