Campus Lumber Project
Project Description
Campus Lumber Project will fund the equipment, materials, and student wages to operate a sawmill for milling trees taken down on campus into useable lumber for campus student groups, workshops, and the F&S Mill shop. Additionally, the project seeks to engage students and staff with the process of milling lumber and train them in it. Once lumber is milled and dried, it can be used in student workshops and at the F&S Mill shop. This would allow students to create works with local lumber and staff members to create items for sale in university stores, within campus buildings, and in new construction.
The future of this project hopes to expand by partnering with the City of Urbana and Champaign to obtain waste timber and increase production to divert as much lumber waste as possible. These groups have already been contacted about this possibility.
This proposal directly funds:
1. Wood Mizer Sawmill, electrical Installation estimate, replacement blades 15pk
2. Power feed for sawmill, log clamp, mill headcover, Pro-Package (tools to move logs onto mill)
3. Toe boards, resaw attachment (making veneer etc), LT15 stand for resaw attachment
4. Student workers, metal detector (Lumber Wizard), mini Ligno moisture meter
5. Operation & transportation costs
