LED Lighting Replacement Project
Project Description
The campus LED lighting upgrade project aims to replace existing T8 fluorescent lighting systems with energyefficient LED alternatives, addressing both sustainability goals and upcoming regulatory changes, including the phase-out of fluorescent lamps in Illinois by January 2027. While LED lamps are largely supplied by the local utility, funding is required for fixture modifications and installation. The project leverages coordination with Facilities & Services and other stakeholders to implement upgrades across high-impact buildings. LED lighting provides comparable or improved illumination while using significantly less electrical energy and generating less heat. Expected outcomes include reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and substantial waste reduction due to LEDs lasting up to 10 times longer than fluorescent lamps. Additional benefits include improved studying and working conditions for campus occupants, alongside significant cost avoidance from reduced energy use and maintenance. This project represents a timely, high-impact initiative with strong environmental, economic, and operational benefits.
This proposal directly funds the following. See approved budget for details.
1. Light fixture modifications 2. Labor cost of installation of bulbs
