Recensus of Trelease Woods Forest Dynamics Plot - Phase 2 (2026)

Project Description

Trelease Woods, is the site of landmark studies on forest succession, climate change and food web structure, and a core site for teaching ecology. In 2018 SSC funded the census of Trelease, carried out by 76 undergraduates who mapped, measured and identified all 32,000 trees. We now request funds to complete the recensus of Trelease, training to another ~100 students, providing dynamic data on the forest - growth, mortality and recruitment –and new opportunities to tie data to student learning. The forest data provides (i) training in forest ecology to students, (ii)”big data” for SIB and NRES classes, (iii) teaches importance of forests in the global carbon cycle, (iv) contributes to the ForestGeo, the premier forest monitoring network consisting of 84 sites and 7 million trees around the world.
