Walkability Study (Ongoing)

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign aims to

  1. increase walkability on campus;
  2. increase physical activity and promote healthy lifestyles;
  3. ensure the safety of those using walkways
  4. make our campus 100% ADA compliant

To achieve these goals, the Facilities & Services (F&S) Transportation Demand Management (TDM) department is conducting a thorough Walkability Audit of the UIUC campus in fiscal year (FY) 2022. A Master of Urban Planning student is helping with this project as her capstone. This project will have two data collection surveys:

  1. Walkability questionnaire focuses on the general walkability for a small block in the campus
  2. Deficiency reporting focuses on identifying specific faults

Volunteers will also audit the entrances to buildings and ADA accessibility.

We need to assess our campus’ walkway conditions frequently to preserve and improve the infrastructure. This project will help us identify areas that are good for walking and areas that require attention. It will also help us create a priority list of walkways preservation and improvement projects, which will subsequently result in a comprehensive Campus Walking Master Plan. F&S TDM team would like to develop this Master Plan by FY23. F&S TDM team aims to conduct a thorough Walkability Audit of the campus at least once every ten years. That will allow us to update the priority list and keep the Campus Walking Master Plan current.

In 2010-11, the Wellness Center on campus worked to promote a Culture of Wellness for our University students, faculty, and staff.  This office collected information on the Walkability of campus pathways.  By working with volunteers to perform walking audits, the Wellness Center was collecting detailed comments and notes about walking around campus.  This information was shared with Facilities and Services and incorporated into project prioritization for sidewalk improvements.
