Project Description
Green Roof on Undergraduate Library

Atop the Undergraduate Library is a rooftop terrace that features the building entrances, seating, and look down into the lower courtyard. This rooftop also has tree pockets built into the roof, that are supported by building infrastructure featured in the orginal plans for the building. The trees in these pockets make the terrace into a green roof for the Undergraduate Library. They provide protection from direct sunlight and the evaporation of moisure off of plant material that can cool the buidling's rooftops and lowering energy costs from cooling while increasing the roofs lifespan.

FY10 RCx

The Fiscal Year 2010 Retrocommissioning efforts completed seven more buildings. This year, the Student Sustainability Committee also contributed to funding the RCx efforts for the Illini Union Bookstore.

Water Fountain Retrofit

The Illinois Student Senate Environmental Sustainability Subcommittee has a vested interest in promoting environmentally responsible campus policies and projects in an effort to encourage responsible and sustainable practices at the University of Illinois. One of the projects which our committee has been discussing since the beginning of the semester has been encouraging the student body to wean off of disposable water bottles and promoting reusable water bottles, with the greater goal of curbing litter and wasteful discarding of recyclable bottling materials.

LED Exit Signs

As part of the iCAP and LED Campus initiatives at the University, incandescent and flourescent bulbs in Exit Signs are being replaced with LEDs. This is part of the LED Campus commitment to replace all interior wayfinding fixtures on campus by 2025.

ICECF 2009 Lighting Retrofit [ARCHIVED]

The ICECF 2009 Lighting Retrofit was the second round of the T-12 to T-8 Lighting Retrofit Project. A total of 33,192 T-12 fixtures were replaced with thinner, more energy effiecient T-8 fixtures. This will incur a total Annual KWh  Savings of 5,335,909 hours. Thirty university buildings were involved in this round of the project. The total Simple Payback is estimated to be 1.17.

Install Low Flow Fixtures throughout Campus

The UI plumbing fixtures are being upgraded to low-flow fixtures.  This includes fixtures such as low-flow urinals that use only one-pint of water, dual flush toilets that allow users to select whether a large amount or a smaller amount of water is needed for flushing, and automatic faucets with aerators, that reduce the flow volume of faucets and also shut off automatically when not in use.  The Facility Standards for plumbing require

Energy Conservation Incentive Program (ECIP)

For many departments on campus, energy and utility costs do not impact research, teaching, or departmental budgets.  The  academic departments are supplied with utilities through the campus administrative budget.  For these departments, an incentive program has been implemented to encourage these units to conserve energy. 

Presentations with Energy Liaisons [ARCHIVED]

To communicate within departments and colleges, we asked Energy Liaisons established by F&S to promote energy conservation to host presentations in their buildings which will include a display, information, and materials specific to your buildings. The first of these presentations were conducted during Sustainability Week, October 2011. The goal is to use the Energy Liaisons and various campus sustainability committees as grassroots contacts for initiatives such as energy conservation.

FY09 SSC Bike Parking Upgrades [ARCHIVED]

The goal of this project is to provide standard bicycle parking at three locations on campus: Freer Hall, the Undergraduate Library, and the Agricultural Engineering Sciences Building.  This will encourage bicycle riding and support the Campus Area Transportation Study (CATS) mission “to better accommodate pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and vehicle movements in a more user-friendly environment.”  This is also one of the amenities recommended by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Multi-Modal Transportation Study recommendation to “provide other amenities to accommodate existing bi
