Hives for Beekeeping Club

Project Description

The Beekeeping Club at UIUC intends to keep at least 2 beehives at the Sustainable Student Farm. This team will build a fence around them in order to protect them from the heavy winds. They will be entirely student maintained, including during the summer. This team hopes to teach students how to keep bees and foster an appreciation for how honey is made. The Beekeeping Club will sell the honey the bees produce at the Sustainable Student Farm’s stand on the quad. This team will also sell honey to the Dining Services, allowing them to provide even more local food.

Having the bees at the Sustainable Student farm will be a great benefit to their crops. The bees will help to pollinate, and this will make their output increase. The honey that this team sells will help the campus to consume locally.  Finally, students will see environmental issues through the viewpoint of a beekeeper. They will be personally effected by issues like deadly pesticides and climate change, and thus likely increase their participation in activism against it.
