Recycling Bins Pilot at Ikenberry

A project is planned for March to evaluate a new outdoor recycling station in comparison to existing bins with revised signage.  Housing has the station located inside the entrance of Ikenberry Commons.  For the project, that station will be placed outside along the North entrance, directly across from the existing bins.  After one week, waste audits will be conducted on both stations, the stations will then reversed, and the experiment will run for another week.

Japan House and Arboretum Bicycle Parking

Japan House and the University of Illinois Arboretum request funding to provide bike racks on their grounds. There are currently no available bike racks in the 57-acre Arboretum and Japan House grounds. Japan House is the site of University classes and the Arboretum is frequently used as a resource for classes from units such as Landscape Architecture, and Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences. In addition, the Arboretum and the Japan House Gardens are a major recreational resource for students, faculty and staff and the general public.

Policy on Polystyrene Products

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has adopted a policy to discontinue the use of polystyrene products on campus because of its damaging effects on the environment and the potential health hazards.

This policy applies to all units on the Urbana campus.

This policy is implemented under the authority of the Executive Director of Facilities & Services.

The purchase of polystyrene products by University of Illinois departments and units is prohibited.

Huff Hall, Khan Annex: LEED Silver

In February 2013, the Huff Hall Khan Annex achieved Silver LEED Certification status. The additions construction priorized the Indoor Environmental Quality category scoring 12 out of 15 possible points. The addition was made possible by a generous donation by University Alumni Shahid and Ann Carlson Khan.

Huff Hall has been home to Illinois State High School Association (IHSA) state basketball tournament. Huff Hall currently houses the Fighting Illini volleyball, wrestling and gymnastics teams.

LAS Honors College - Sustainability Partners [ARCHIVED]

A Pilot Program to Enhance Opportunities for LAS James Scholars to participate in Honors and have a Positive Impact on our Community.

Only Community Partners Involved in this Info Night are approved for this pilot program (while there are many wonderful opportunities, this is a pilot so we are deliberately starting small).

No other Partners will be approved for this semester.

This evening, you will learn of some of the needs of our Community Partners.

Sustainability Council

The Sustainability Council was established in 2008 as part of our campus’s implementation of the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment, and was intended to help lead sustainability efforts on campus and provide strategic direction and oversight of the iCAP. The present policy does not attempt to define the entirety of the Sustainability Council’s role, but merely to formalize its composition and its relationship with iCAP.

Illinois Green Office Challenge

The Illinois Green Office Challenge is an impact-driven program that encourages friendly competition among offices/office buildings to adopt sustainable practices. By participating in the Challenge, individual offices or entire buildings earn points for their companies while helping make Illinois more competitive, livable, and sustainable.

Green My Crib [ARCHIVED]

Green My Crib is a competition between sorority houses to see which chapter can make their house the most sustainable. The University of Illinois Greek community represents 23% of the undergraduate population on campus, over 7,300 students. Most of the Greek students at the University reside in their sorority or fraternity houses for at least a year. The current recycling and energy efficient efforts by sororities are lacking and with such a huge population comes responsibility. Chapters will receive points based on 4 categories: energy, waste, green purchasing, and education.
