Green Observer 2013

Project Description

For nearly twenty years, the Green Observer (formerly Natural Resources) has been a major communications tool for campus sustainability efforts. This edition of the Green Observer, beginning in 2010, has seen the transition from a tabloid format to a magazine, with color printing and a renewed focus on Green Lifestyles as well as news. The publication is entirely student run, and collaborates extensively with all environmental RSO1s, campus initiatives and units, and community groups. The end result is a publication that plays a keystone role in linking and integrating campus efforts, an empowered writing and editorial staff, and a community which is better informed and more aware of environmental topics and issues.

The Green Observer strives to connect environmental communities and individuals with initiatives and concerns that are relevant to the campus community. Originally "Just another print newsletter" of Students for Environmental Concerns in the 1990's and early 2000's. Overall, the Green Observer is an exciting and vibrant piece of the environmental community. That said, the costs of publication has consistently outstripped revenue generated from ads and other fundraising efforts. They currently carry over $500 in debt, and would have to significantly down-scale in coming years without additional funding. Additional funding will also help towards the goal of printing on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, and using non-toxic soy-based ink.
