Volunteer for the Campus Bicycle Census

Posted by Emily Repetowski on March 30, 2026

F&S, along with volunteers, will conduct a Campus Bicycle Census on Tuesday, April 14, at 11 a.m. The data collected by the group will be used to identify high-ridership locations for future mobility, safety, and infrastructure improvements, such as bike rack parking upgrades, pathway enhancements, and interactive mapping updates. Previous censuses have counted more than 5,500 parked bicycles on the Urbana campus at one time.

Volunteers Needed

Sign up to volunteer for the upcoming census. Instructions will be given during on-site training at 10 a.m. on the day of the event at Anniversary Plaza (south of Illini Union), or during an initial session on Monday, April 13 (Microsoft Outlook invite) in the same location, for those who cannot attend the day-of meeting. Volunteers may either bike or walk around the campus to look for off-rack and on-rack bicycles.

Micromobility Analysis

New for the 2026 census, e-bikes/e-scooters and other micromobility devices will also be tracked. This specific snapshot will help F&S to expand and support the U. of I. active transportation network through both the bike share program and by developing more parking and charging options for students, faculty, and staff across the university.
