Key Objective

Description

Facilities & Services (F&S) at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign operates a fleet of nearly 300 vehicles supporting maintenance activities across this campus. F&S is making a commitment to lead the University in reaching the iCAP goals related to University motor vehicle transportation. The primary F&S fleet, the Truck Pool, meets two main criteria that allow it to lead the University in attaining the transportation related iCAP goals:

1) Large and varied – the Truck Pool consists of vehicles ranging from small pickup trucks to large dump trucks. This range of vehicle types provides opportunities to enact pilot programs using small numbers of vehicles in order to validate assumptions.

2) Centrally managed – the Truck Pool is centrally administered by a fleet professional knowledgeable in transportation related sustainability efforts and industry best practices.

Background

There are four primary aspects to the F&S Green Fleet Plan:

  1. Freeze vehicle fleet at current levels
  2. Collect data, establish a baseline and report
  3. Reduce use of petroleum based fuels
  4. Incorporate new technologies when appropriate

Decreasing fuel consumption helped the University of Illinois earn accreditation as a sustainable fleet by the National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA). Earning the accreditation shows that F&S is taking a proactive approach to managing its vehicles and protecting the environment.

Maintaining a sustainable fleet is something F&S does to help reach target goals in the Urbana campus Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP). The accreditation was awarded in September 2015. Among the 10 criteria evaluated were percentage of alternative fuel used, percentage of advanced technology vehicles in the fleet, idle reduction, greenhouse gas emissions, and having a sustainable fleet plan.

The first college/university in the state and Big Ten Conference to earn NAFA sustainability accreditation, F&S earned a Tier 2 (out of 4) level of achievement.
