Krannert Center Recycling Project
Project Description
One of Krannert Center’s critical strategic pathways is to continue to make a significant and visible, assessable societal impact through the arts by responding to major social and global issues such as sustainability and the environment, and health and well-being. The Center accomplishes this through initiatives such as biodegradable food containers at Intermezzo Café and recycling programs for batteries, light bulbs, cardboard, metal, wood, electronics, and aerosol cans. Krannert Center’s recycling efforts for waste generated by students, faculty, staff, and patrons were centered around campus’s waste transfer station being a mixed-waste facility where all items could be thrown into one receptacle, and the recyclables would be sorted out later. This was advertised to all who entered the building through graphics printed on the trash bins. Krannert Center was informed this year that the language was inaccurate and should be removed. Since then management has received inquiries from various users of the building who are concerned about seeing no option for recycling their waste. Adding recycling receptacles that match those recently installed in buildings across campus by Facilities and Services will reduce the amount of trash generated by those who frequent the Center and will serve as a strong visual to reinforce the campus’s commitment to sustainability.
