Zero Waste Woodshop

Project Description

The goal of this project is to create a zero waste woodshop. An incredible amount of material flows through the shop and most students waste way more than they use. Currently, this team recaptures as many scraps as it can for re-use, but there is always potentialf for more. The idea is that by acquiring a few tools to separate synthetic (plastics, EPS, polyurethane foam, etc.) from natural (wood & wood products) materials, this workshop can drastically minimize waste to the university landfill and use the recaptured material for a multitude of other uses. This team is working on procedures that would utilize the waste for fuel energy at the student farm, composting needs, construction uses (e.g. sheet goods (mdf and particle board), insulating bricks, additive in concrete construction, food for mycelium bricks), and whatever other uses that can derive from this material. Showing students a viable means of repurpose and reuse can and will inspire them to do more to reduce their own carbon footprint and recruit them in the continuation of future research on the aforementioned topics.
