The goal of this project is to make plastic bag and film recycling more accessible to the campus community. 6 collections bins have been set up at 4 different buildings. After evaluation of the current setup, more drop-off locations may be added or changed.

By completing this project, Plastic Bag Recycling will offer multiple benefits such as:

Intensive Longitudinal Analysis of Health Behaviors: Leveraging New Technologies to Understand Health Behaviors

This program aims to provide funding to encourage research projects that seek to explain underlying mechanisms and predict health behaviors within individuals over time utilizing intensive longitudinal, within-person protocols that leverage recent advances in mobile and wireless sensor technologies and big data analytics.

Mobile Monitoring of Cognitive Change

This program invites applications to design and implement research infrastructure that will enable the monitoring of cognitive abilities and age, state, context, or health condition-related changes in cognitive abilities on mobile devices.

Office of behavioral and social sciences research

The missions of the office is to Enhance the impact of health-related behavioral and social sciences research, coordinate behavioral and social sciences research conducted or supported by the NIH, integrate these sciences within the larger NIH research enterprise,  and Communicate health-related behavioral and social sciences research findings to various stakeholders within and outside the federal government

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)

NIEHS is one of the 27 research institutes of NIH. The mission of the NIEHS is to discover how the environment affects people in order to promote healthier lives. Grants awarded by the Institute cover a broad range consisting of the following topics in general: Conditions and diseases, Environmental agents and Population research.

Infrastructure Security and Energy Restoration (ISER)

This program applyies the Department of Energy's technical expertise to help ensure the security, resiliency and survivability of key energy assets and critical energy infrastructure.

Solid Waste Management Grants

This program reduces or eliminates pollution of water resources by providing funding for organizations that provide technical assistance or training to improve the planning and management of solid waste sites.

Structural and Architectural Engineering and Materials (SAEM)

SAEM aims to enable sustainable buildings and other structures that can be continuously occupied and/or operated during the structure’s useful life. The SAEM program supports fundamental research for advancing knowledge and innovation in structural and architectural engineering and materials that promotes a holistic approach to analysis and design, construction, operation, maintenance, retrofit, and repair of structures.

FY10 RCx

The Fiscal Year 2010 Retrocommissioning efforts completed seven more buildings. This year, the Student Sustainability Committee also contributed to funding the RCx efforts for the Illini Union Bookstore.

Skip the Bag Campaign

The Student Sustainability Committee funded an effort to decrease the use of single use plastic bags at the Illini Union Bookstore.

Waste Stream Characterization Study Phase 1

F&S has requested a proposal from the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC) to get waste stream audits for select buildings across campus.  The program will repeat the efforts completed by ISTC at their building, on a larger scale.  This project could eventually extend to cover all campus facilities, or it could be done at select locations on a recurring basis to measure progress.

Lighting Retrofit #5

In Lighting Retrofit #5 a total of 32,993 T-12 fixtures were replaced with thinner, more energy effiecient T-8 fixtures. This will incur a total Annual KWh  Savings of 5,414,849 hours. Fifty-five university buildings were involved in this part of the T-12 to T-8 Lighting Retrofit Project. The total Simple Payback is estimated to be 3.1 years.
