Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

According to Illinois Extension, "Integrated Pest Management is a system for reducing crop losses from insects, weeds and plant diseases. IPM uses all available control practices such as crop rotation (changing what's grown in a field), selecting resistant varieties (plants resistant to pests), mechanical cultivation, changing planting and harvesting times, biological control (using other living organisms to control pests), and chemical control."

On-Campus Solar Farm 3.0

In September 2022, the Associate Vice Chancellor and Executive Director of Facilities & Services Ehab Kamarah presented a summary of options for meeting our iCAP 2020 objective for clean energy use to Chancellor Jones.  One option was to add a third on-site solar farm, in conjunction with an indirect power purchase agreement.  The idea was discussed further at the Sustainability Council, and F&S is now investigating the opportunities for adding another solar farm on South Farms, between Solar Farm 1.0 and Solar Farm 2.0.

Agrivoltaic Research Solar Array at Energy Farm

The Energy Farm brought new life to a 15 kwh Solar array that was originally on the Building Research Council building which was demolished. These 3 arrays are now an agrivoltaic research site located on the Energy Farm. A live dashboard of the array displays real time energy information.

These arrays were used in 2023 to test row cropping, but as of the 2024 season have been utilized for consumer crops like tomatoes and kale.

Vertical Solar Panels on MEB

The Sidney Lu Mechanical Engineering Building has employed 4 levels of photovoltaic panels which sit within window panels. These window panels extend from the 1st to 4th floor. On floors 1-3 the panels are covered with an interior wall, but on the 4th floor study area they are on full display.
