Description

As part of the iCAP 2020 objective 3.4.1 to develop a Commuter Program, Parking and F&S will create an Emergency Ride Home (ERH) program. The ERH program will provide faculty and staff who use alternative modes of transit—besides their personal vehicles—to travel to work, access to a free ride in an emergency event. In providing this service, the University will help facilitate its employees choosing a more sustainable transportation option by reassuring them that they could still travel home quickly in an emergency.

ERH programs, also known as Guaranteed Ride Home, are used widely by universities and cities to encourage the usage of active transportation. Access to these programs is typically limited to those who use active transportation, and these qualified users are allotted a set number of free rides per year. These rides can be used in the event of a qualifying emergency to bring users to their home, transit stops, healthcare facilities, or to a dependent's school/daycare. Currently, eight of the 18 Big Ten schools have their own ERH program, though several more are covered by publicly available city/regional ERH programs.
