Indoor Bin Update |
This project will improve the recycling process in buildings around campus by encouraging sustainable actions and improving the layout of waste and recycling bins within these buildings. Facilities & Services collaborated with ISTC to make an “Indoor Solid Waste and Recycling Collection Assessment”. This assessment determined that the type and layout of collection containers in buildings across campus should be standardized. An update would enable them to be co-located and allow for greater infrastructure consistency. |

Structural and Architectural Engineering and Materials (SAEM) |
SAEM aims to enable sustainable buildings and other structures that can be continuously occupied and/or operated during the structure’s useful life. The SAEM program supports fundamental research for advancing knowledge and innovation in structural and architectural engineering and materials that promotes a holistic approach to analysis and design, construction, operation, maintenance, retrofit, and repair of structures. |
Civil Infrastructure Systems (CIS) |
CIS supports fundamental and innovative research necessary for designing, constructing, managing, maintaining, operating and protecting efficient, resilient and sustainable civil infrastructure systems. Research that recognizes the role that these systems play in societal functioning and accounts for how human behavior and social organizations contribute to and affect the performance of these systems is encouraged. |
FY11 RCx |
In FY11, the Retrocommissioning teams completed eight buildings. The Facilities & Services Retrocommissioning Team at the University of Illinois received the 2011 Illinois Governor’s Sustainability Award at a ceremony on Thursday, October 27, 2011. Established in 1987, this award has been presented to both public and private organizations that have achieved significant progress on projects designed to protect the environment and improve sustainability within the State of Illinois. |
ICECF 2008 Lighting Retrofit |
The ICECF 2008 Lighting Retrofit was the first round of the T-12 to T-8 Lighting Retrofit Project. A total of 52,810 T-12 fixtures were replaced with thinner, more energy effiecient T-8 fixtures. This will incur a total Annual KWh Savings of 8,630,641 hours. Thirty-one university buildings were involved in this round of the project. The total Simple Payback is estimated to be 2.13. |
Green Roof on Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics Building (formerly called Foreign Language Building) |
The LCLB basement roof is a plaza at ground level. It was built to accommodate greenery on the roof and did so from 2012 to 2014. The planters were filled with porous rock for ease of maintenance. The area still helps with rainwater runoff, however, plants could be added to the planters again to provide more benefits around the ground level of the building. Plants were added on 6/18/24. |
Energy Conservation Incentive Program (ECIP) |
For many departments on campus, energy and utility costs do not impact research, teaching, or departmental budgets. The academic departments are supplied with utilities through the campus administrative budget. For these departments, an incentive program has been implemented to encourage these units to conserve energy. |
Occupancy and Daylight Sensors |
Occupancy Sensors provide automatic ON/OFF switching of lighting loads to enhance convenience, security and long-term energy savings. Daylight sensors are battery-powered sensors that save energy by dimming or turning off electric lighting when sufficient daylight is available. The sensor detects light in the space and then adjusts the lights to take advantage of daylight, thus conserving energy. These sensors are being incorporated into most new projects and as many retrofit/retrocommissioning projects as possible, with funding and electrical/mechanical application being key factors. |
FY12 SSC Bike Parking Upgrades |
In FY12, the Student Sustainability Committee approved $225,000 to upgrade a number of bike parking locations on campus. Facilities & Services is completing the work to upgrade these locations by the end of Summer 2013. |
