Campus Tree Inventory

This project documented individual trees on campus, using a GPS device and collecting tree details into the ArcGIS data layer.  The previous Tree Inventory was last updated in 2006, and it included trees that had subsequently been removed and it was missing new trees that have been planted. Through this project, the Tree Inventory was updated to include all and only existing trees on campus. The environmental benefits included in the tree inventory are directly derived from iTree, with the help of Davey Research Group who completed the survey on campus.

Research Opportunities and Projects

Research is central to the sustainability of the University and the region. Already a world leader in sustainability and climate research, Illinois is developing opportunities for researchers from diverse disciplines to come together to explore new frontiers in discovering solutions to the challenges ahead. Innovative research collaborations focused on creating knowledge and new technologies are being developed to discover, analyze, and implement new approaches for addressing sustainability and climate change challenges.

Collection and Donation of Abandoned Bicycles

Every summer, Facilities & Services (F&S) tags all bicycles left on campus property and confirms the abandoned bicycles. University Parking cuts the locks, collects, and transports the abandoned and unwanted bicycles on campus. The bicycles are inventoried at the storage facility and the bicycles are searched in the University's registered bicycle database to identify the owners of the impounded bicycle. If the bicycle is registered, the owner is contacted to collect their bicycle. If the bicycle was not registered, it is kept in the storage until mid-September.

Seek External Grant Funding for Research

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is a well known Tier 1 Research Institution, with several Nobel prize winners and highly utilized innovations, like the LED and the web-browser.  In support of the Climate Leadership Commitments, researchers can connect their grant applications to an iCAP project, using the campus as a Living Learning Laboratory.  The major funding bodies for sustainability research are EPA, NSF, DOE, and USDA.

Guest Speakers for Sustainability Topics

Several classes, community groups, and conference developers request guest speakers regarding various aspects of campus sustainability.  From specific topics, such as the Red Oak Rain Garden, to more general efforts, such as renewable energy use on campus, the sustainability staff and certain topical experts are available upon request to provide a 30-50 minute presentation or discussion.

Solar Urbana-Champaign

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is helping to promote and encourage participation in the Solar Urbana-Champaign program.

The successful Solar Urbana-Champaign group purchasing program is available again in 2018. Since 2016, the program led to the installation of over 2 megawatts of solar on 241 properties in Champaign, Piatt, and Vermilion Counties. The program educated over a thousand individuals about solar and helped people save on solar through volume purchasing.

In 2021, the program conducted its sixth round of bulk purchasing.

Support Regional Sustainability

The local Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy community is actively moving toward a more sustainable future.  The University participates in several community-wide sustainability events and programs and supports regional sustainability efforts. There are also larger-scale programs with other colleges, both state-wide and with our Big Ten peers.
