Weatherization of Small Campus Buildings [ARCHIVED]

The Student Sustainability Committee has organized and funded a pilot project in which students conduct energy assessments of campus buildings for the purposes of weatherization. Teams from student organizations conduct the assessments, and receive payment for their work. This semester, five organizations are participating. F&S has contributed support and funds to the actual weatherization of the building. Small campus buildings, including the cultural houses, selected on the basis of energy usage, are assessed.

Sustainability in Study Abroad

Study abroad programs are an integral part of the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign’s education, allowing students to gain experience in a variety of fields. The integration of sustainability into the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign’s study abroad programs will allow students to gain firsthand experience with sustainability concepts and apply their learning in their respective fields. The University of Illinois Urbana Champaign has established the Illinois Abroad Council Steering Committee (IACSC) to integrate sustainability into the study abroad curriculum.

Teaching Sustainability Workshop aka Prairie Project [ARCHIVED]

The course inventory exercise enabled us to identify gaps in sustainability course offerings.  Primary gaps in course offerings are in the humanities and social sciences. To aide in filling those gaps, the Office of Sustainability, now the Center for a Sustainable Environment, offers a teaching sustainability workshop each spring.  The workshop provides an opportunity for teachers (faculty and TAs) to learn methods for integrating sustainability into their courses.  A small stipend is available to those who complete the assignments.

Curriculum

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is constantly striving to improve the education of its students.  Through the efforts and contributions of many individuals, several opportunities were identified for integrating sustainability into our education mission.

Educate Future Leaders

As a world-class university, Illinois has the capacity and the obligation to assume a leadership role in climate destabilization research and action. We believe it can inspire a wide range of exciting and crucial scholarship, while developing cross-campus partnerships, and engage our students. Significant efforts are underway in addressing each of the University's core components of its mission—education, research, and public engagement, along with campus operations, as they relate to sustainability.

Bicycle Education

Bicycling is the most sustainable mode of transportation.  It is fun, convenient, and healthy, yet many people do not utilize this excellent travel mode because they need more information.  The University is working with the communities to provide bicycle safety training, awareness events, and lessons in maintaining a bicycle.
