Projects Updates for theme: Resilience

  1. Shared metrics - UIUC FY14 data

    In order to collaborate for sustainability improvements, it is helpful to have a shared baseline data set.  the Sustainability Practitioners developed a list of potential shared metrics for our region, and the attached file shows the UIUC data from FY14 for these metrics.

    These primarily came from the STARS report put together by Stephanie Lage at the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment, for the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.  There are also several data points taken from the Facilities & Services Utilities & Energy Services website.

  2. idea for a Native Plants and Pollinator support discussion group

    In August, this group discussed the general topic of native plants and pollinator support. We considered options for measuring the effectiveness of the current landscape as pollinator support, and we considered methods for encouraging more native plantings throughout the community.  One big hurdle is that there is no actual funding available.  One of the examples of past success with a similar situation is Champaign County Bikes, where a group of highly motivated community members worked together to change the bicycling culture.  We determined that a good first step would be for iSEE to invite interested individuals together to discuss options for moving forward.  (There are several groups that should be invited, so it will not be difficult to find the interested folks.)

  3. Green Apple Day of Service letter from iSEE to local schools

    The USGBC Green Apple Day of Service (http://greenapple.org/dayofservice) was September 26, 2015, and iSEE Associate Director Madhu Khanna sent a letter to local schools encouraging them to participate.  The letter is attached here, and the outcomes are shown on the USGBC website at http://www.usgbc-illinois.org/green-apple-day-of-service-success-stories/.

  4. Monthly update

    Associated Project(s):

    Dear Colleagues:

    We hope this email finds you well. We are writing to provide you an update on the Big Ten Prospectus. Based on conversations with individual partner institutions, Metrics Working Group members, and progress made over the last month, we’ve determined we need to expand the metrics development process to allow for:

    • Background research on mission level objectives and metrics: Two and a half weeks ago, the Metrics Working Group took a break from their work to allow Emilie to research desired institutional outcomes among executive leadership. Building on a strong foundation from our pre-AASHE conversation and a preliminary list of outcomes compiled by a Purdue student, she took two weeks to read strategic planning documents (e.g., presidential speeches, university-wide and campus specific strategic plans, sustainability reports) from our partner institutions. She will be reaching out to you in the next couple of days to inform you which documents she’s reviewed from your institution and request your suggestions for additional documents you feel should be reviewed. The next two weeks will be spent synthesizing this information into conference wide executive leadership outcomes, priority areas, and metrics. Final conclusions will be outlined in a 1-2 page summary document.
    • Communication with executive leadership: We hope the summary document can be used by each of you to initiate a conversation with one or more allies in executive leadership for the purposes of: 1) conveying basic project details, and 2) obtaining feedback on synthesized outcomes, priority areas, and metrics.
    • Additional time for metrics development: After some very helpful feedback from partner institutions, we’ve extended this process to allow our Metrics Working Group more time and support to build a set of metrics for the prospectus based on mission level outcomes and metrics, our metrics developed at the pre-AASHE meeting in Portland, and STARS.

    We’ve summarized these modifications in the attached graphic.

    Given these modifications to the process, we’ve extended the timeline for the project with the pre-AASHE meeting in Minneapolis now serving as a midpoint check-in for the project, and a potential meeting at the Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference serving as the final project deadline. A summary of key dates can be found below.

    We will be touching base monthly to inform you of progress on the project, but we encourage you to reach out any time with comments or questions about the process.

    To-date, nine (9) partner institutions have committed to the Prospectus project by paying the invoice that was distributed by AASHE on our behalf.  We have a verbal commitment from several of the remaining institutions and hope that you can get the invoices paid by the end of the month.  Thank you for your continued support and participation.

    Best,

    Michael, Denice, Liz, and Emilie

  5. Opportunities for Collaboration

    Hi everyone,

    Attached is the Opportunities for Collaboration document draft discussed at today’s meeting, including the list of plans that helped inform the document. Please send me your top picks from the ideas listed (and any ideas that aren’t on the list), as well as plans that did not get considered but should have, so that successive drafts can be more comprehensive. Let me know if you have any questions or other comments.

    Thanks!

  6. Prospectus

    Associated Project(s):

    We are writing with an update on the Big Ten and Friends Sustainability Group’s effort to develop a prospectus with the working title “Aligning Sustainability with Leadership Priorities”. We are pleased to inform you that AASHE has agreed to handle financial arrangements for project, including invoicing all partner institutions and paying the consultant. We have reframed the original memorandum of understanding document into a scope of work, which we are attaching here for your review.

  7. Challenge is Open

    Associated Project(s):

    Hi All,

    The wait is over and the Illinois Green Office Challenge has begun!  Please go to the sign-up page to register for the competition.  In this first month the focus is going to be on creating a profile in the Energy Star Portfolio Manager.  That activity will establish a baseline so you can measure your improvement throughout the year.  For support, workshops are now being scheduled.  If your organization would like to host an event please let me know.  As always, please call or email me with any questions.

    Cheers,

    Bart

  8. project update

    Associated Project(s):

    Hi Morgan,

    The project I am working on is called Green My Crib. I have attached the flyer that I sent out to houses below. Basically, I made a checklist of items in the categories of energy, waste, green purchasing, education and community. Houses compete against each other by receiving points based on what items from the checklist they implement in their house.

    Right now, I am trying to get houses interested. The end goal right now is to get about 5 houses interested this semester and expand next semester. I am planning to do audits of the houses who sign up so I can recommend the best ways for them to make their houses more green.

    Let me know if you can think of any ways to better publicize this competition to the Greek community or if you know any students interested in helping out.

  9. Goals have been surpassed!!

    The original goals for the Urbana-Champaign Energy Star Challenge were to get 50 buildings registered in the challenge and 25 buildings benchmarked.  As of today, there are 68 buildings registered in the U-C Energy Star Challenge and 41 benchmark reports (called SEPs) submitted.

    There was a news article about surpassing the goals in July in the News-Gazette, with a voice recording of an interview with Scott Tess, City of Urbana Sustainability Manager.

  10. Letter of Support for Solar Market Pathways

    Professor Ben McCall provided the attached letter of support for the Solar Market Pathways program that CCRPC is coordinating.  It is a system that allows local residential properties to learn more about their options for installing solar on their property. Those interested in doing so could then purchase in bulk at a reduced rate.

  11. Madhu Khanna to lead efforts for regional climate action plan

    Hi Madhu,

    Thanks for being willing to guide the discussion about a regional collaboration for sustainability efforts.  I had a chance to talk with Al Stratman about this, and he agrees that it is appropriate for iSEE to lead this discussion on behalf of the university.  Al asked that I remain on the team as his representative, so please continue to include me in the meetings.

    I’ve attached the (unedited) notes I took during our meeting at the end of May.  Also, Stephanie and I will investigate the impacts of expanding the iCAP Portal to include community/county sustainability efforts.  Please let me know if you need any additional information.

    Thank you,

    Morgan
