Projects Updates for theme: Resilience

  1. County e-waste collection

Tomorrow, April 12, Champaign County will be holding a free residential electronics collection event. Note that this one will take place at Parkland College, rather than the News-Gazette Distribution Center, which was the location for past collections. See http://wp.istc.illinois.edu/blog/2014/04/11/free-residential-electronics-recycling-collection-event-champaign-co-41214/ for further details, including the list of acceptable items.

  2. Kick off meeting

IGBA is reviewing their certification checklist - this is the second version, so creating a 3.0 version.  To add additional credibility to the program they are bringing in outside experts to review the process, look through the checklist, edit it line by line, make suggestions from small changes in wording to large changes like adding, combining the credits, and suggest weighting factors.

    1. create a more streamlined and up to date checklist
    2. create a smaller more focused checklist

There were 9 sections - now there will be 8.  There is a TAG for each section, plus the certification steering committee looking at the broader picture.  Ryan is the staff representative - no voting rights, organize meetings, and conduit between the groups.

To become certified a business must complete the required credits and 50% of the program in each section that applies to that business (based on operational control).  The goal of the weighted checklist is to incentivize businesses to choose some of the harder items.  For example in energy, you can upgrade your entire HVAC system for one credit or you can add stickers to light switches for one credit.

Hoping to have the review process completed by fall 2014, with a draft by August. Additional members would be nice - especially from a larger transportation area.  This will be all types of transportation, so Morgan suggested Scott Spegel with Amtrak and Ed Barsoti with the League of Illinois Bicyclists.

Ryan will send the existing checklist and transportation assessment.  He will also highlight the items that only a few businesses have used and provide staff information about the questions businesses have asked about existing items.  Please read those docs and make any changes in Word, with track changes turned on.  Next meeting is last Friday in April.

  3. requesting participant list

Hi Andrew, Jane, Scott, Rob, and Stephanie,

At the last Sustainability Practitioners discussion, Jack Dempsey asked about a Regional Climate Action Plan.  After that brief discussion, he talked with campus leadership.  Mike DeLorenzo then talked with the “IAC” about the idea.  Reportedly, Laurel Prussing was enthusiastic and the Champaign City Manager liked the idea and wanted to get a little more info.  I do not know if Bill Volk or Deb at RPC have heard of this yet.

What I’d like to do is meet with the six of us and talk about this idea.  We can flesh out the idea more, develop a list of pros and cons, and consider the different options for moving forward.  Jane and Andrew, would you please let me know if you can and will participate in this discussion?  Scott, can you confirm that you are the right person to include for Urbana?

    Thanks!

    Morgan

    Subject: Climate Change Plan

Mike - I don't think that I ever followed up on last month's request about our interest in participating in a discussion about a Regional Climate Change Plan.  I have asked Rob Kowalski, Assistant Director of Planning and Development to serve as the City's rep on any group you choose to convene.  I have copied Rob so you have his email address.

  5. approval to investigate

Just spoke with Mike DeLorenzo and you have the go ahead from the IAC to have discussions with the Sustainability Practitioners from Urbana and Champaign. As you might have guessed Mayor Prussing is strongly in favor of the idea. The Champaign city manager like the idea but wants to learn a little more before committing. Deb was not at the meeting, but you should be able to contact the RPC. Of course, given bill Volk’s history of commitment to environmental issues I suggest you also reach out to their people.

Next step is to develop the pros and cons of such an undertaking.

    -Jack Dempsey

  6. potential regional CAP projects

    • Energy
      • Currently, we are collaborating with the cities to encourage building managers to sign up for the U-C Energy Star Challenge to encourage energy conservation.  UI students volunteer to assist the building managers with data entry into the Energy Star Portfolio Manager, and SEDAC provides technical support to the program.
      • The City of Champaign includes data about the CO2-e emissions from Abbott Power Plant in their sustainability plan.
      • We all have renewable energy interests, so there may be a potential to collaborate to encourage the renewable energy adoption around this county.
    • Land & Space
      • I am not sure if there is a project/collaboration already underway with this topic, except through UI Extension’s outreach to the 102 counties.
      • This is an area where we could potentially collaborate to facilitate in-fill development and additional greenspace.
    • Procurement & Waste
      • The UI Waste Transfer Station was built after the Community Recycling Center was closed a few decades ago.  Now, however, both cities have recycling programs in place with more acceptable recyclable content that we accept on campus.  Perhaps the UI could increase the types of materials that we recycle through a collaboration with the cities.
      • Also, the City of Urbana’s Landscape Recycling Center is piloting food composting, and we could potentially work together to compost materials from campus that are not recyclable.
    • Transportation
      • Currently, we are collaborating on transportation planning through CUUATS.  This works very well and should continue to be supported.
      • To encourage alternative fuel vehicles, the UI is installing Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, and the cities may be interested in collaborating on a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling station.  If there were a CNG filling station available in this area, the UI Fleet could be converted to using CNG rather than traditional gasoline.
    • Water
      • Currently, we are collaborating on stormwater management through the MS4 program.  This includes the Green Infrastructure conference and the Boneyard Community Clean-up Day.
    • Education/Outreach/Promoting
      • Perhaps there could be a promotional effort to educate community members about general sustainability practices and encourage people to choose Champaign-Urbana as their permanent home.

Urbana is updating their existing Climate Action Plan, and Champaign has recently completed their Sustainability Plan.  With the proposed update efforts for the Illinois Climate Action Plan, this is good timing to start this discussion.

  7. initial inquiry from Jack Dempsey

    From: Dempsey, John Garrett
    Sent: Tuesday, February 11, 2014 12:49 PM
To: Stratman, Allan; Delucia, Evan H; Andrechak, Michael J; DeLorenzo, Michael T
Cc: McCall, Benjamin; Johnston, Morgan B
Subject: FW: Accelerating Urban Sustainability Initiatives

One of the items that I agreed to work on during my last 9 months here is: “In coordination with the Chancellor’s Office work with representatives from Champaign, Urbana, Savoy, MTD, and the Regional Planning commission to evaluate the potential for a region-wide Climate Action Plan.” In the past the timing just wasn’t right to get everyone to agree to such an idea. However, with the recent completion of the Champaign Sustainability document and the current updating of the Urbana and University CAP’s the timing may be right.

  9. committee meeting, Job Shadowing discussion

Ed Choklek led a discussion about the Committee moving forward with creating a new Job Shadowing Program for college and university students with USGBC Illinois members in 2014. Tom Shelton shared the results from his Doodle Poll to all Committee members and the preferred months were March, April and October. After some additional discussions, we agreed that late March and October would work best for the campus sustainability professionals since April is a very busy month because of Earth Day activities. Ed Choklek answered questions from several meeting participants based upon their reading and review of information provided on the USGBC Missouri Gateway’s Job Shadowing Program. John Brophy, Paul Matthews and Ed Choklek will meet with USGBC Illinois leadership before our January 20, 2014, Committee Meeting to get approval to move forward with our proposed Job Shadowing Program and to determine resources available from USGBC Illinois to support this new initiative. (Check on using USGBC Illinois Chapter Speakers’ Bureau members and USGBC Illinois Chapter Board of Directors for the 2014 Job Shadowing Program since these groups represent many different business sectors.)

  10. Household Hazardous Waste website

Dear Community Members,  Alternative options are being explored in an effort to identify more efficient strategies for the collection of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW).  To provide an informational hub in the research project’s seven-county area, a website has been created.  The site provides information regarding HHW, collection efforts in each county, collection sites, the project, and finally a collaborative blog to share thoughts with other stakeholders.  At the moment the website is still quite raw and running on a very slow host server, but please look over the content and provide feedback.  In the near future we will hold meetings in each county.   Our hope is that you will share your thoughts about what would work best in your community and the region as a whole.  Those thoughts will be considered in the construction of options for implementation.

Here is the link to the HHW East Illinois website: http://hhweastillinois.co.nf/

Thank you for your time and consideration,

  11. UIC sustainability report

    Associated Project(s):

UIC's Chancellor's Committee on Sustainability and Energy (CCSE) is tasked with making recommendations to Chancellor Allen-Meares on sustainability and energy related topics to maintain our campus's climate commitments. This fall, the CCSE created their 2013 CCSE Report, which included recommendations relating to campus grounds, transportation, recycling and waste management, energy and utilities, and events and activities.  A copy of this report can be found at http://www.uic.edu/sustainability/reports/CCSE_2013_Report.pdf.

  12. Household Hazardous Waste collection plans

About this time last year, the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, in collaboration with the Lumpkin Family Foundation and the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center, embarked on a project to improve Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection options in a seven-county area (see attachment) of East Central Illinois.  Our study area includes Champaign County. This past July, we completed Part 1 of the project--a comprehensive overview of HHW collection activities in Illinois and best management practices.

Part 2 is now underway.  We intend to develop recommendations regarding efficient and convenient options for HHW collection within our project study area.

We ask for your assistance and invite your input regarding these two questions:

    1. What volunteer groups or interested parties in Champaign County might be interested in supporting or participating in an improved HHW collection program?

Participation can include marketing, promotion, collection, or perhaps even using some of the collected products.

    1. Do you know of collection options in your county that are already taking place for the following products:
    • anti-freeze
    • cell phones
    • compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL)
    • fluorescent tubes and high intensity discharge (HID) lamps
    • lead acid batteries
    • motor oil
    • paint
    • rechargeable batteries
    • transmission fluid
    • unwanted medicines

We are putting the finishing touches on a website to share HHW collection options in the study area, raise awareness regarding current efforts, and build strategies to improve HHW collection.

You will be notified once this website is launched.

Each county has its unique aspects, and ask that you share your insights and perspectives to optimize the effectiveness of this collaborative effort.

Please respond to this email with any thoughts, ideas, or concerns.  Also, we are happy to meet to discuss potential options at your convenience.  Please forward to anyone that may have an interest.

  13. committee meeting, Job Shadowing discussion

Ed Choklek and Paul Matthews led a discussion about the Committee moving forward with creating a Job Shadowing Program for college and university students with USGBC Illinois members in 2014. Some of the college and university attendees chimed in with ideas, concerns and suggestions. After further discussion about logistics and timing, Paul Mathews agreed to have Tom Shelton send out a Doodle Poll to all Committee members to try and determine which months would work best for getting student involvement. Ed Choklek agreed to learn more about how the USGBC Missouri Gateway Chapter has done their Job Shadowing Program and will report back to the Committee on December 16. John Brophy and Paul Matthews will approach USGBC Illinois leadership to check on using USGBC Illinois Chapter Speakers’ Bureau members and USGBC Illinois Chapter Board of Directors for the 2014 Job Shadowing Program since these groups represent many different business sectors.

We've corresponded with the folks at CCN a bit about how to facilitate this and it sounds like they have a process that we can start working through in the next few weeks. Have any of you conducted an inter-university competition through CCN (or other means) before? If yes, any insights on how that went or what you'd recommend to make it successful would be appreciated.   As a starting point, I thought it might be helpful for all of us to identify the scope of our campus competitions and that might inform what we do for a competition among our schools. Here's what we are planning right now at the U of Minnesota: 11 residence halls participating, possibly 12 if we can figure out how to get their data into the system (leased property). We are currently planning to report electricity data only. Dates of competition will be February 17 - March 17. Baseline data would be gathered two weeks prior to competition. This may change a bit in the coming weeks, but it shouldn't shift much.
