Dump and Run (In Progress)

Recent Project Updates

Description

The end of the spring semester sees thousands of students moving out of on-campus residence halls. A spring move out program, Dump & Run, has been implemented to collect good materials and divert them away from otherwise being discarded in the trash. The collected materials will be donated to local non-profits in Champaign-Urbana to promote the reuse and repurpose of these items. Every year, hundreds of volunteers are needed to assist with this program. Volunteers are stationed at central collection locations across the campus to direct students toward the collection boxes and ensure that the appropriate items are being donated.

Background

For many years, University YMCA was the primary unit organizing and executing Dump & Run. At spring move out, YMCA collected items for donation from residence halls. Over the summer, the items would be separated and organized by volunteers. During fall move in, a large move in sale was executed, so items collected from the spring could be resold to students coming back for the academic year.

In 2023, F&S and University Housing succeeded the YMCA as the primary units overseeing the spring move out program. Under the F&S and University Housing programming, donations made in the spring are now immediately donated to local nonprofits in the Champaign-Urbana community. YMCA still manages their sale in the fall, with donations made from the community.
