FY14 RCx |
In FY14, the Retrocommissioning teams completed ten buildings. |
Waste Stream Characterization Study Phase 2 |
The primary deliverable of this proposed project is to provide a detailed waste characterization assessment for three facilities located throughout the Urbana-Champaign campus of the University of Illinois. Lincoln Avenue Residence Halls (LAR), Business Instructional Facility (BIF), Roger Adams Laboratory(RAL) are facilities that will be characterized. |
ActGreen |
We educate and empower future global business leaders to make business decisions that positively impact the environment. |
Green Roof on the Business Instructional Facility (BIF) |
A green roof was constructed on the Business Instructional Facility as part of the overall green initiatives used in the construction of that building. Rooftop over the auditorium and a 1200-square foot section on the fourth roof were constructed to be green roof. Unlike conventional flat roofs, green roofs have a layer of substrate in which native plants are grown. This roof type has several benefits. Firstly, less water is discharged since the substrate detains water instead of merely draining it. The water that is discharged is also cleaner, since the plants work as a filtration system. |
BIF Greywater Pipe System |
The Business Instructional Facility (BIF) was designed for future use of greywater, which is raw (untreated) water. Although the building is fed from the potable water supply, there is separate piping for the urinals and water closets in the building. |
Business Instructional Facility: LEED Platinum |
The Business Instructional Facility was awarded the LEED Platinum Certification on December 2, 2009, having achieved 52 of the 69 possible points on the LEED Scorecard. The construction was especially strong in the Indoor Environmental Quality, receiving 13 of the 15 possible points in that area. This building is the first business facility at a public university anywhere in the world to earn platinum certification through LEED. Cesar Pelli, a U. of I. |
Energy Conservation Incentive Program (ECIP) |
For many departments on campus, energy and utility costs do not impact research, teaching, or departmental budgets. The academic departments are supplied with utilities through the campus administrative budget. For these departments, an incentive program has been implemented to encourage these units to conserve energy. |
BIF Rooftop Solar PVs |
The Business Instructional Facility was the first production rooftop solar PV array installed on a campus building. In 2009, 168 panels were installed above the auditorium, with 190 Watts per panel and a total system size of 32 kW. The installed panels were SANYO HIP-190/200BA3 PV Modules, with UniRac SolarMount PV Mounting Hardware, Xantrex PV20208 Inverters, and Xantrex CB-12H20-3R Combiner Boxes. |
Provide Shower Facilities for Cyclists |
Many encouragement programs for cycling address the needs of cyclists who choose to commute via bicycle. In some cases, the cyclist arrives on campus feeling sweaty and would like to freshen up before beginning the work or school day. To this end, it is convenient if showers are provided for bicycle riders to use on campus. The Business Instructional Facility (BIF) and Lincoln Hall have bicyclist showers for the staff and approved users. This option should be provided to other campus cyclists, to help encourage more bike riding. |
Sustainability in Study Abroad |
Study abroad programs are an integral part of the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign’s education, allowing students to gain experience in a variety of fields. The integration of sustainability into the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign’s study abroad programs will allow students to gain firsthand experience with sustainability concepts and apply their learning in their respective fields. The University of Illinois Urbana Champaign has established the Illinois Abroad Council Steering Committee (IACSC) to integrate sustainability into the study abroad curriculum. |
