Search tips:
- This form will search for words in the title OR the description. If you would like to search for the same term(s) across both the title and description, enter the same search term(s) in both fields.
- This form will search for any of the words you enter in a field, not the exact phrase you enter. If you would like to search for an exact phrase, put double quotes (") around the phrase. For example, if you search for Bike Path you will get results containing either the word Bike OR the word Path, but if you search for "Bike Path" you will get results containing the exact phrase Bike Path.

Library interested in getting bike lockers
Associated Project(s):Hi Jim and Morgan,
Can this project be funded in total by the Students for Sustainability grant? If not, there is insufficient support at this time from the Library to assist in funding the initiative.
Thanks

The proposal raises some questions. Some practical, some policy.
We will meet with Amelia and she can do a little research for us.

I was curious about how much these cost, so I checked with one of the companies that seems to be used by several other Universities and major public venues around the country (although there are two other companies that also seem popular I didn’t check with them for comparative quotes, since this was very preliminary research). I worked with Brittany Chavez (turtle.storage.ltd@gmail.com) from the American Bicycle Security Company and she provided the attached quote for a trial size set (25 units) which runs about $40,000 (including delivery) and, I’m spitballing here, but I’m guessing another $5,000-$10,000 in local labor to have them installed, so about $50,000 ($2,000/unit) complete.
This include some local customization (orange/blue theme, i-mark on the front door).

Subject: RE: FACILITIES NOTICE: Bicycle Thefts Across Campus - REMINDERHi Robert and Jeff,
The appropriate approval for a bike locker would come from the Architecture Review Committee (ARC). Jim Lev, copied here, is the chair of that committee. I always start with them for proposed changes to the exterior campus space.
I’ve also copied Amelia Neptune here, as the Campus Bicycle Coordinator in my office. She would be a good reference for understanding the preferences of cyclists around campus, if you would like that input.
Please keep me informed about any decisions to put in bike lockers. It is one of the items that we get asked about and I’d like to know if you do end up getting some installed.
Thanks a ton,
Morgan

Subject: RE: FACILITIES NOTICE: Bicycle Thefts Across Campus - REMINDERHey Jeff,
I finally got a quote back from those bicycle locker companies. They run about $1500-$2000 a piece (unless you are ordering a ton, in which case the offer a per unit discount). What campus entity makes the decision on what bike racks are purchased and where they are installed? Does each college/unit decide for the area around their building? On their own or with the blessing of campus facilities?

Associated Project(s):The third (2014) publication of the map was released in August, 2013. The Office of the Dean of Students provided funding for the printing of 12,000 copies to be distributed across campus during the 2013-2014 school year. To request printed copies for your department or group, please contact the Campus Bicycle Coordinator, Amelia Neptune, at aneptune@illinois.edu.
Now Hiring: student employees
Associated Project(s):The Campus Bicycle Shop seeks to hire 2 part-time student employees to assist the Shop Manager. The position would involve duties such as helping members/users of the space with their needs, repairing bicycles, assisting in organizing events, shop organization, teaching bicycle repair, assisting with bicycle-related classes, and other duties as assigned.
The Campus Bicycle Shop – a collaboration between the University of Illinois and The Bicycle Project of Urbana-Champaign – is dedicated to empowering individuals with knowledge about how to repair and maintain bicycles. This is a hands on, educational space meant to provide knowledge and experience about fixing bicycles, not a "drop it off for repair" bike shop. The Campus Shop provides tools, parts, refurbished bikes for sale, educational classes, and dedicated volunteers to help members and the larger community with their bicycle needs. Membership in The Bike Project at Urbana-Champaign is valid at both the Campus Shop and the Downtown Urbana Shop.
Requirements: An interest in or passion for bicycling and sustainable transportation is required. Illinois is an Affirmative Action /Equal Opportunity Employer and welcomes individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and ideas who embrace and value diversity and inclusivity. (www.inclusiveillinois.illinois.edu).To apply, submit a cover letter, resume, and contact information for three references via email to: jmroedl@illinois.edu. Please include "Student Assistant Position" in the subject line. Please include a copy of weekly class schedule and any other time commitments.
Skills: Previous bicycle repair experience, membership in The Bike Project of Urbana Champaign, and familiarity with the Campus Shop would be preferred but are not required. Familiarity with social media, college campuses, and educational work would be helpful. Preference will also be given to applicants eligible for Federal Work Study.
Campus Bicycle Coordinator Position Formalized
Associated Project(s):A new Academic Hourly Position, Campus Bicycle Coordinator, has been created within the Facilities & Services division. Amelia Neptune, formerly a Sustainability Specialist in F&S was appointed to the position for the 2014 Fiscal Year (July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014). The Campus Bicycle Coordinator will report to the Sustainability Coordinator within F&S, under the Engineering & Transportation Services department. The Campus Bicycle Coordinator will be responsible for promoting bicycles and bicycle education, enforcement, encouragement, engineering, and evaluation and planning.

Associated Project(s):Facilities & Services is taking an interim step to make some initial improvements during spring and summer 2013. This work includes repainting several existing dedicated bike off-road and side paths, and adding stop signs for bicycle traffic at key intersections on existing paths. This step does not bring the existing bikeways up to acceptable safety standards, yet they will reduce bicyclist / pedestrian conflicts.

New Bike Racks have arrived!
Associated Project(s):The University purchased 34 1-loop Challenger Plus - (3 Bike) - Surface Flange - Stainless Steel from Graber Manufacturing, Inc./Madrax Bike Racks, in 2013. These bike racks were installed at the Art & Design Center at the University of Illinois.
bike parking review meeting
Associated Project(s):Stacey DeLorenzo, Amelia Neptune, Morgan Johnston, and Noel Grove met to review the bike parking estimates for this project. There are a few locations where the pavement is in terrible condition, so we discussed options for handling those locations. The racks could be installed on rails, or the pavement could be replaced. There were also a few locations where there are conflicting major projects occuring in the near future. Stacey will talk to the project managers for those sites to work through the solutions for the bike parking installation.
Additionally, this project includes the installation of one bike fix-it station at Allen Hall. Amelia began this work and Stacey will take it over now. Stacey and Amelia will meet with Sean Sullivan in the SSC to provide him with an update. Noel Grove will provide cost break downs with the pavement work separate from the bike rack installation work. He will also contact the Iron Workers to discuss options for racks on rails built in-house.
volunteer training
Associated Project(s):James Roedl did a volunteer training showing three people the specifics on how to overhaul hubs. It was a great event.
New Shop Manager Hired for Campus Bicycle Shop
Associated Project(s):James Roedl has been hired as the new Campus Bicycle Shop Manager, replacing Ken Sutto. James' first day of work is May 28, 2013. Ken's last day is June 14, 2013, giving the two managers roughly 3 weeks of overlap for training and orientation. The shop will remain open during regular hours, Monday-Thursday, 2-6pm and Friday, 2-5:30pm. The Campus Bicycle Shop Manager reports to the Sustainability Coordinator in Facilities & Services (Morgan Johnston), and is funded jointly by the University and The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign. James can be contacted at jmroedl@illinois.edu.

Bike fix-it station update

Subject: Bicycle Repair Station outside of Allen HallHi Vonne,
As you may recall, earlier in the school year we had discussed that there is some funding for a new bicycle repair station near Allen Hall/CRCE. The original location we proposed near Gregory Drive in front of CRCE was rejected by the Architecture Review Committee, and they have proposed a better location near the bike parking area in front of Allen Hall. I would like to get your OK on this location before we move forward.
The first attached PDF shows the location proposed by the Architecture Review Committee. As you’ll see in the photos on pages 2 and 3, it is on existing pavement, close to the bike parking, but not blocking a walkway, which I think is ideal.
The second PDF shows the specifications of the newly designed repair stations so you know what it would look like. The new design is much smaller and (in my opinion) more attractive than the existing repair stations we have elsewhere on campus. The blue color of the existing stations is no longer available, so our plan is to match the color of the adjacent bike parking, in this case black.
Please let me know if Housing has any objections to this location, or would like to meet there in person to discuss it further. Once I have your approval, we’ll move forward placing the order and installing this summer. Please let me know if there are any questions.
Thank you,
Amelia
