Today, members of the planning team attended the first meeting for Bike Month. The team discussed bike lights, event dates, event times, event locations, and future meeting dates.

Join the celebration of Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22, by biking around campus, grabbing a free set of lights, or registering your bicycle!
As part of the university’s Earth Month events, the first-ever Bike for Earth Day will feature three welcoming centers open from 3 to 7 p.m. at:

• Alma Mater Plaza 
• Hallene Gateway (intersection of Illinois Street and Lincoln Avenue)
• Activities & Recreation Center (east side driveway)

F&S, MTD, Urbana, and Champaign are planning to host an event in April 2025 (around Earth Day 04/22) to give away the remaining lights and t-shirts from Bike to Work Day and Light the Night. Additional details are still being discussed internally.

All, Another busy week with the fun addition of Bike To Work Day and Light The Night. Haven’t seen the numbers yet but both events went well,  I believe. Friday was surprisingly slow here, which was great since I had staff out sick. We had a BTWD participant follow up and volunteer with us on Friday, which was great.

With the previously mentioned events out of the way, it’s on to prep for the abandoned bikes being released to us soon. Space is at a premium, so we’ll have to get creative and/or judicial in the bikes we utilize. Hope to get a few more bikes on the sales floor. We also already have one bike ready to go for our Kids Bike Giveaway.

Campus wide email sent from fscustomerrelations@illinois.edu informing students and faculty about Bike to Work Day, Light the Night, and how to reclaim an impounded bike. The official online email can be found here.

1. Reclaim Your Abandoned Bike
   Facilities & Services impounded 262 abandoned bicycles on campus this summer. If your bike is one of those and you want it back, email bike@illinois.edu and include where it was located, the make/model, color, and serial number, if possible. Bike registration information or other documentation will be needed to prove ownership (e.g., pictures). Retrieving a bicycle will require an active bike registration per the University Bicycle Ordinance. There is also a $40 retrieval fee that supports bike collection efforts. This year's reclaim deadline is Monday, Sept. 30. 
2. Celebrate Bike to Work Day on September 18 and Receive a Free T-Shirt
   Ride your bike to campus on Wednesday, Sept. 18, and get a free t-shirt! Welcome stations will be set up across the area from 7 – 10 a.m., including eight U of I locations. Celebrate Champaign County Bike to Work Day with others by stopping in for refreshments and snacks. You must bring your bicycle and pre-register at https://go.fs.illinois.edu/BiketoWorkDay to get the shirt!
3. Light the Night – Free Bike Light Giveaway
   The 17th annual Light the Night is Thursday, Sept. 19, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Alma Mater Plaza, Hallene Gateway, and Ikenberry Commons Quad. You MUST bring your bike to get a light set. Approximately 1,000 bike light sets will be available this year. Remember, bike lights are required by Illinois law when riding at night. If you would like to volunteer for this event, please sign up here.
4. Register your bicycle
   Bicycle registration is mandatory for all bicycles parked or operated on campus and owned by students, staff, faculty, University departments, and community members. There is a one-time $10 registration fee per bicycle. All bicycle registrants will enter a raffle for a chance to win a U-lock or a Helmet. Learn more about the bicycle registration raffle.
