Quick update from Sarah
Associated Project(s):Morgan and Sarah had a quick conversation today about the ODMFL project and plants. Sarah reported that the plants were stored in pots at the Arboretum over the summer, and Kevin is working to move them into planted buffer polinator strips at the Sustainable Student Farm. Sarah is going to continue to talk with Housing about the Orchard Downs project.

The individual working groups met at various tables and discussed their plans for the year.
Katie Kinley suggests CITES utilize rechargeable batteries
Associated Project(s):Katie Kinley, with the Student Sustainability Committee, expressed interest in getting the CITES department to use rechargeable batteries in their equipment, rather than single use batteries. Morgan Johnston provided her with a contact name to initiate the discussion. It was also noted that CITES can receive SSC funding for projects, but we don't believe they have applied in the past.

Subject: IBI trailerHello IBI representatives,
In order for F&S specialists to adequately review the IBI biodiesel trailer installation requirements, we will need additional details from the manufacturer. Craig Grant is the Associate Director of Campus Code Compliance and Fire Safety, and he told me that the website for Verde Biofuel does not specify the codes that company used when creating their trailer systems.
Please confirm the specific trailer you intend to purchase, and seek the detailed specifications for the equipment used in that trailer. We need to know, for example, if they followed the National Electric Code (NEC) requirements.
You are welcome to call me at 217-344-0044 if you would like to talk about this.
Thanks,
Morgan
F&S email about approval for a trailer
Associated Project(s):Hello folks,
As some of you know, the Illinois Biodiesel Initiative (IBI) is very interested in getting a self-contained trailer to do their reactions in. There is a company called Verde Biofuel that makes these trailers, and the IBI is in discussions with them.
- Examples of the trailers can be seen here: http://verdebiofuel.com/products/mobile-biodiesel-processors/.
- They would like to purchase a 250 gallon system, but have it installed in a 7X14 foot trailer.
- It would be best with 240 volt electrical service, but they told me that they could make do with 120 volt service if necessary.
- They would like to park this indefinitely in a single location on campus. If permissible, the area near parking lot B21 (behind Loomis) or B1 (behind Ceramics) would be convenient to them.
- They also need access to water, essentially a faucet to wash tanks, etc. They would use the water to clean the equipment only, and propose taking it in a tote to dispose the waste water correctly.
We are looking for feedback about what needs to be done in order for this trailer system to be approved by campus. Are there certain location restrictions they will need to abide? Do they need to incorporate anything in addition to what is listed above? For example, they will need to store glycerin, soap, and waste oil somewhere. Should they be looking at a permanent tank or two?
Please let me know your thoughts and if you would like to discuss this in person.
Thanks,
Morgan

e-waste project
Associated Project(s):Hello, my name is Jonathan Bressler. I am the president of Tikkun Chambana, a Jewish environmental RSO. We are trying to start a pilot campus e-Waste recycling program, as the only drop off for Champaign County according to your website is off campus. We are doing this in conjunction with Green Purpose LLC, a for-profit recycling company in Champaign.
We are starting in The Cohen Center as a pilot before expanding outward to other places. However, we are also trying to look long-term to secure some sort of funding or grant to allow this to continue. Therefore, I was wondering if you or someone else at the ITSC could assist with that or direct us elsewhere to any sort of grants you or others may be giving.
request for public charging station

Subject: FW: electric vehicle charging stations
Dear Mr. Hobbs,
Thank you for contacting the Parking Department and providing your comments. While electric charging stations are not readily available on our campus, there are discussions currently underway that include the Parking Department about the installation of electric charging stations. We are in touch with other campuses around the nation and many are likewise exploring the use of EV stations. Because the scale of the UIUC campus is vast, the program requires extra consideration, funding and logistics to execute. Please know however, that UI is committed to sustainability and will continue our effort.
Again, thank you for your input. We hope your visit to our campus was enjoyable.
Regards,
Thomas Skaggs

Subject: electric vehicle charging stations
To Whom It May Concern:
I visited the U of I campus yesterday to attend a football game and was disappointed in the absence of EV charging stations. I would expect a university and city of this caliber to have numerous Level II charging stations available for the public to use. Normal/Bloomington have dozens of public EV charging stations, all of which are free to the public to use. Many are located on or near the ISU campus. Is the Bloomington/Normal and ISU community that much more progressive and environmentally friendly than the U of I and Champaign/Urbana community. I don't think necessarily that is the case, but the absence of electric vehicle charging stations sure leaves a black mark on the reputation of the university and the community. I sincerely hope that your community has plans to install Level 2 charging stations in the near future.
Sincerely,
Martin Hobbs

Morgan talks with Mark Warner in Plumbing Shop
Associated Project(s):Mark Warner is the Plumbing Shop Foreman who will oversee the installations of these water fountain glass fillers. Morgan gave him the preliminary priority list, discussed the work order methodology, and gave him the SSC funding requirements document. The key points in the SSC funding requirements are (1) the funds must be spent by May 31, 2014, and (2) there must be at least 57 glass fillers installed with this funding.
Morgan will submit one work order for each building.
Morgan requests AiM account for project
Associated Project(s):Morgan sent an email to Janet Spencer in F&S Operations, Maintenance, and Alterations business office, about getting an AiM account for the SSC CFOP with this funding.
Library interested in getting bike lockers
Associated Project(s):Hi Jim and Morgan,
Can this project be funded in total by the Students for Sustainability grant? If not, there is insufficient support at this time from the Library to assist in funding the initiative.
Thanks

I was curious about how much these cost, so I checked with one of the companies that seems to be used by several other Universities and major public venues around the country (although there are two other companies that also seem popular I didn’t check with them for comparative quotes, since this was very preliminary research). I worked with Brittany Chavez (turtle.storage.ltd@gmail.com) from the American Bicycle Security Company and she provided the attached quote for a trial size set (25 units) which runs about $40,000 (including delivery) and, I’m spitballing here, but I’m guessing another $5,000-$10,000 in local labor to have them installed, so about $50,000 ($2,000/unit) complete.
This include some local customization (orange/blue theme, i-mark on the front door).

Subject: RE: FACILITIES NOTICE: Bicycle Thefts Across Campus - REMINDERHi Robert and Jeff,
The appropriate approval for a bike locker would come from the Architecture Review Committee (ARC). Jim Lev, copied here, is the chair of that committee. I always start with them for proposed changes to the exterior campus space.
I’ve also copied Amelia Neptune here, as the Campus Bicycle Coordinator in my office. She would be a good reference for understanding the preferences of cyclists around campus, if you would like that input.
Please keep me informed about any decisions to put in bike lockers. It is one of the items that we get asked about and I’d like to know if you do end up getting some installed.
Thanks a ton,
Morgan

Subject: RE: FACILITIES NOTICE: Bicycle Thefts Across Campus - REMINDERHey Jeff,
I finally got a quote back from those bicycle locker companies. They run about $1500-$2000 a piece (unless you are ordering a ton, in which case the offer a per unit discount). What campus entity makes the decision on what bike racks are purchased and where they are installed? Does each college/unit decide for the area around their building? On their own or with the blessing of campus facilities?

Morgan Johnston speaks with ESE 360, Rob Kanter
Associated Project(s):Rob Kanter is teaching a class about environmental writing. Rob is known for his Environmental Almanac work, and began teaching this class last year. A year ago, Morgan Johnston gave a presentation overviewing the work that is happening with the Climate Action Plan. This year, rather than a presentation, the students did a group interview. There were twenty students.

- Amy will continue working on the anti-water bottle campaign.
Tuesday lunch minutes
Associated Project(s):Lunch Meeting from Tuesday, September 3rd 2013
What Happened: Today was a first informal meeting of minds sharing an interest in sustainability. There were five total attendees from very different backgrounds and levels of involvement.
Why: While a more formal meeting might get more done, the informal setting can happen under the pretense that people just like to share ideas. More importantly, sharing ideas just to do it is something that is strongly encouraged with the right motives in mind.
Details: This meeting was a follow up on an idea to improve the interconnectivity of “Green Teams.” These teams vary in scale as much as they do in internal organization and both currently exist throughout the community or will come into being in the near future.
Hopefully, the ideas that these meeting produce will be implemented to help each group become more aware of the rest. As put forward by an attendee, it should be a goal to eliminate the “reinvention of the wheel” for our community’s idea of sustainable culture.
Next Steps: The discussion was very geared toward the ability to get larger groups of people involved. The collaboration with officials that have knowledge of the given subject a team is associated with is essential, but the ability of a group to create incentive that hits home with your average consumer is tantamount to getting sustainability to take off. The idea was put forth of a virtual tracking system that showed a goal and its progress or assigned points to community members for involvements within goals, as such ideas have been successful in the past.
However, getting systems like this off the ground require getting people excited, and the idea of a goal or nominal reward is not enough. Well laid out systems must be designed.
Education: Along the lines of what is being sought after for these meetings is the education of the public of how they can get involved. We heard today about a lot of the ways that these teams are already interconnected in ways that your general resident likely has no clue about. Two examples are given below:
Learning IN Community, or LINC courses. These classes often are in a sustainable strain of thinking and are offered as a way to get students involved with local associations. Link provided in comprehensive list.
The Extention Progams. These are specific to land grant schools, such as UIUC, that attempt to focus on teaching, research and outreach. Link provided in comprehensive list.
