Projects Updates for place: Main Quad

  1. Meeting minutes from the March 16th meeting

Please see attached the meeting minutes from the meeting on March 16th. Also attached are the slides from this meeting.

Attended by: Yanfeng Ouyang, Shelly Zhang, Morgan White, Stacey DeLorenzo, Sarthak Prasad, Weichen Li, Rui Feng She, Barb Robbins, Paul Jensen, Gina Lee-Olukoya, Dementro Powell.

  2. Weekly Update - Data request form, news article, Mathemetical models

    Dear Stacey, Morgan, and Prasad,

The CEE research team (including Shelly, Weichen, Ruifeng, and I) has held two weekly meetings and discussed our ongoing project. Below is a summary of the ongoing efforts:

    • We have filled out the data-request form, and we look forward to hearing back on the data in the near future;
    • We have requested the CEE Department to prepare a news article on our project; we heard that you may be contacted for quotes and comments.
    • We are in the process of developing suitable mathematical models and solution methods for our project.

As for the next step, we wonder if there is a good time to schedule a quick interview with you, and/or the stakeholders you mentioned last time? The purpose is to understand the design options and restrictions (i.e., types of barriers, guideways, and/or booth-location choices).

    Thank you.

    Yanfeng

  3. PWR SWATeam Meeting - 2/5/18

The PWR SWATeam had their first meeting of the semester, where they discussed several updates related to purchasing, waste, and recycling. The Team discussed concerns about recycling bins on the Main Quad, persistent issues with the purchasing of recycled paper on campus, challenges with a centralized battery recycling program, and the formal adoption of EPEAT standards for electronics on campus. The SWATeam also discussed and provided feedback on a formal recommendation for the expansion of SmartWay to other campus units.

  4. FY 17 SSC funding for Zero Waste Coordination

The SSC funding for Zero Waste Coordination ($64,862) covers four different recycling efforts.

    1)      Campus-wide infrastructure, $29,750: Expanding the “Dual bins on the Quad” to north of Green and eastward to Goodwin Avenue, in collaboration with F&S Superintendent of Grounds Ryan Welch.  Ryan’s Grounds workers are mapping the existing bins, as a first step.  All of this funding is for the physical infrastructure (bins and lids, etc.).

    2)      Campus-wide education, $1,032: The key message of personal responsibility for waste management needs to be communicated through multiple channels on campus, in order to effect the culture shift that we deeply need on campus.  F&S will create educational materials to explain the recycling options available to the campus community, to reduce confusion.  The funding is based on 8 presentations throughout campus and development of educational materials (which will be used in future years as well).  All materials will thank SSC for their funding support.

    3)      Building specific solutions, $30,520: Per the completed Waste Characterization Studies, there are various changes that can be implemented in the studied buildings to improve waste diversion.  These changes need to be approved and implemented in coordination with building occupants, so there is a need for a staff coordinator to work with the individual units.  The funding is based on two weeks of staff time per building, for eight buildings.

    4)      Special recyclables expansion $3,560: There are new programs available for interested units on campus to recycle nitrile gloves, styrofoam, alkaline batteries, and glass.  Unfortunately, very few units are aware of these opportunities.  We are requested funding for student employees to reach out directly to potential participants and help them incorporate the applicable programs.

  5. update from Bart

Subject: Recycling on the Quad recap

    Hi All,

Here is an overview of yesterday’s meeting.  Please let me know if I have misunderstood anything or left something out.  I have attached a worddoc version if you prefer to read from that.

    Actions

    Bart

    ·         is going to pick up one case of 33 gallon liners from Tracy and take them to Ryan’s storage area near the Quad.

    ·         Needs to contact Sean in the sign shop to change the recycling lid signage from “Funded by SSC” to “Partially Funded by SSC”.

    ·         Will coordinate collecting the lids and get them to the sign shop for sandblasting and painting.

    ·         Get Ryan a copy of the map.  Review with Ryan for changes.

    ·         Send Ryan an overview of the Recycling experiment with Housing

    Ryan

    ·         his team is going to use the liners in the recycling bins.  The idea is to pick up the recycling as needed and place the bags in the Green garbage truck to then be dropped off at the south bay of the WTS.  Adjustments could eventually be made to the process in an attempt to solve any problems.  Options could include:

o   Not using liners and instead making two separate runs through the Quad, one for recycling and then one for landfill.  The recycling could be hauled to the WTS or bagged and dropped off in one of the dumpsters.

o   Pick up recycling and landfill on alternating days.

    ·         Will take care of moving the bins into place and contacting the iron workers to get them secured.

    ·         Will check out his storage area for extra bin lids.  Any extra lids could be used to reduce the amount of time the Quad bins would have to go without a lid.

    TIMELINE

    January

    ·         complete lid signage

    ·         get liners to Ryan

    February

    ·         collect lids and take to sign shop for sandblasting, painting, and signage application

    ·         Take completed recycling lids and put them back out on the Quad

    ·         Run recycling bin experiment with Housing

    March

    ·         On Spring Break, move bins into position and have iron workers bolt them down

    ·         Launch the project following spring break with student volunteers leading promotion

    October

    ·         End the project and review for changes that could include expansion, adaptation, or reversing course.

    BUDGET

    New Bins                                        $12,000

  7. audit plan for Recycling for the Quad

    Associated Project(s):

    Hi Ryan,

Shantanu and I were discussing the waste audits on the quad.  If you agree, we would like the plan to go as follows:

    1.  On Tuesday morning we we like to place liners in the bins, just after they are emptied by your crew.

    2.  On Wednesday morning we would like to pull each of the bags and take them to ISTC for weighing and auditing.  Your crew will not have to pick up the waste from the 45 bins on that day.  We will make sure the waste and recycling are taken to the Waste Transfer Station.

    3.  On Thursday your crew returns to empty the bins and we will again add liners shortly thereafter.

    4.  On Friday we will conduct the second audit so your crew will not have to make a pick up that day either.  Again we will take the material to ISTC and then drop it off at the Waste Transfer Station.

    5.  On Saturday everything returns to normal.

I hope that sounds OK with you.  If so, please let me know what time would be the best to add liners to the bins.

    Thanks,

    Bart

  8. Recycling on the Quad

The intent of this project is to improve the waste process in and around the Quad. The first step will be merging the existing 40 stand-alone refuse containers with twenty new recycling bins to create a total of 30 combined waste/recycling stations. All containers will be cleaned, painted, and color-coded to clearly indicate that one bin is for recycling and one is only for landfill-directed refuse. In addition to the expanded bin options, signage will be placed in the buildings on the Quad to launch the new standards and clarify what can be recycled. To measure the impact from this project, waste audits will be conducted before and after the proposed changes.

  9. SSC funds available

    Associated Project(s):
