    The CEE research team (including Shelly, Weichen, Ruifeng, and I) has held two weekly meetings and discussed our ongoing project. Below is a summary of the ongoing efforts:

    • We have filled out the data-request form, and we look forward to hearing back on the data in the near future;

  3. PWR SWATeam Meeting - 2/5/18

    The PWR SWATeam had their first meeting of the semester, where they discussed several updates related to purchasing, waste, and recycling. The Team discussed concerns about recycling bins on the Main Quad, persistent issues with the purchasing of recycled paper on campus, challenges with a centralized battery recycling program, and the formal adoption of EPEAT standards for electronics on campus. The SWATeam also discussed and provided feedback on a formal recommendation for the expansion of SmartWay to other campus units.

  4. FY 17 SSC funding for Zero Waste Coordination

    The SSC funding for Zero Waste Coordination ($64,862) covers four different recycling efforts.

    1)      Campus-wide infrastructure, $29,750: Expanding the “Dual bins on the Quad” to north of Green and eastward to Goodwin Avenue, in collaboration with F&S Superintendent of Grounds Ryan Welch.  Ryan’s Grounds workers are mapping the existing bins, as a first step.  All of this funding is for the physical infrastructure (bins and lids, etc.).

    2)      Campus-wide education, $1,032: The key message of personal responsibility for waste management needs to be communicated through multiple channels on campus, in order to effect the culture shift that we deeply need on campus.  F&...Expand »

  7. audit plan for Recycling for the Quad

    Associated Project(s):

    Hi Ryan,

    Shantanu and I were discussing the waste audits on the quad.  If you agree, we would like the plan to go as follows:

    1.  On Tuesday morning we we like to place liners in the bins, just after they are emptied by your crew.

    2.  On Wednesday morning we would like to pull each of the bags and take them to ISTC for weighing and auditing.  Your crew will not have to pick up the waste from the 45 bins on that day.  We will make sure the waste and recycling are taken to the Waste Transfer Station.

    3.  On Thursday your crew returns to empty the bins and we will again add liners shortly thereafter.

    4.  On Friday we will conduct the second audit so your crew will not have to make a pick up that day...Expand »

  8. Recycling on the Quad

    The intent of this project is to improve the waste process in and around the Quad. The first step will be merging the existing 40 stand-alone refuse containers with twenty new recycling bins to create a total of 30 combined waste/recycling stations. All containers will be cleaned, painted, and color-coded to clearly indicate that one bin is for recycling and one is only for landfill-directed refuse. In addition to the expanded bin options, signage will be placed in the buildings on the Quad to launch the new standards and clarify what can be recycled. To measure the impact from this project, waste audits will be conducted before and after the proposed changes.
