Projects Updates for Campus Bike Center

James Roedl has been hired as the new Campus Bicycle Shop Manager, replacing Ken Sutto. James' first day of work is May 28, 2013. Ken's last day is June 14, 2013, giving the two managers roughly 3 weeks of overlap for training and orientation. The shop will remain open during regular hours, Monday-Thursday, 2-6pm and Friday, 2-5:30pm. The Campus Bicycle Shop Manager reports to the Sustainability Coordinator in Facilities & Services (Morgan Johnston), and is funded jointly by the University and The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign. F&S requested $30,266 funding from the SSC for the Campus Bicycle Shop for fiscal year 2014. The funding was awarded, contingent on not requesting additional funding in future years.
According to the funding award letter, "Because SSC grants are intended as seed or bridge funding, this grant was approved with the understanding that this project will not seek SSC funding in future years."
In February 2012, The Bike Project submitted a funding request to SSC for $39,872. In March 2012, the SSC approved this funding.
During summer 2012, the University and The Bike Project revised their Facility Use Agreement to clarify their collaborative working relationship. The SSC sent a clarification letter regarding this update and subsequently completed a revised award letter.

This proposal seeks to fund 50% of the cost of part-time shop manager position as transition assistance to become fully self-supporting. This grant will help the Campus Bike Project become a financially sound, self-sufficient, self-funded shop, where all operating costs are recouped through memberships and the sale of recycled refurbished bicycles, new and used parts and accessories. The Campus Bike project is a cooperative where students can learn how to repair and maintain their bike for transportation throughout the year. The campus bike project provides significant services toward increasing bicycle use on campus, and has received significant previous investment from F&S, the Committee and the Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability. The Student Sustainability Committee is in favor of funding a grant in the amount of $7,500.Attached Files:

In Fall 2010, The Bike Project requested $7,500 in funding from SSC for 50% of a half-time shop manager. The SSC approved this request.
The Campus Bike Project, located at 608 East Pennsylvania Ave. in Champaign, will hold an open house on Friday, April 23, from noon to 5 p.m. in conjunction with Earth Day. Tours will be available every hour, on the hour, at 12 noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m.Attached Files:
The Campus Bike Project (later named the Campus Bicycle Shop) opened in March of 2010 during Naturally Illinois and began serving the campus for 16 hours per week (open Monday mornings, Friday afternoons, and Sunday and Tuesday evenings).

In November 2009, funding was requested from the SSC to support the start up costs of the campus location. Unfortunately, this funding was denied.
This afternoon, I verified with Jack Dempsey that he is still willing to fund a 900-HR extra-help employee for the first year of the new Campus Bike Project. The employee will be paid $12.00 per hour for 900 hours, so the full cost is $10,800. - Morgan Johnston
In April 2009, The Bike Project (TBP) representatives submitted an application for funding to the Student Sustainability Committee (SSC). In June 2009, the SSC awarded $30,000 for the shop construction.
In spring of 2009, discussions began between the University of Illinois and The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign, regarding an on-campus bicycle shop. Fred Davidson, Joel Gillespie, and Tony Cherolis were key representatives of The Bike Project. Morgan Johnston, Steve Veazie, and Jeff Courson were key representatives of the UI. The files attached here represent some of the effort that initiated this program.
The original shop was called the Campus Bike Project.
