    The Land & Water iCAP team met on Teams from 1-2 PM on Friday, December 1st. The team discussed the meadow at Orchard Downs, revising the iCAP Land & Water objectives, and the development of an IPM plan for non-F&S areas. Meeting minutes are attached.

    The Land & Water iCAP team met on Teams from 1-2 PM on Friday, October 6th. The team reviewed the iCAP Land & Water objectives, discussed area/projects of focus for the year, and brainstormed next steps in relation to projects that are underway. Meeting minutes are attached.

    On December 13th, the Land & Water iCAP team met to discuss a new approach to crafting recommendations for next semester; including the creation of a land subcommittee and a water subcommittee.

  7. Integrated Pest Management program approved

    The exterior Integrated Pest Management program has been in place for several years, and recently the program was formalized and adopted by F&S Grounds.  This helps meet iCAP objective 7.2 and supports the student-led efforts to achieve Bee Campus USA recognition.

  8. Update from Brian Allan

    Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

    The Sustainability Fellowship to the Allan Lab provided critical support into a novel research program on the effects of green stormwater infrastructure on human risk of exposure to mosquito-borne diseases in urban environments.  These funds helped support the collection of preliminary data, particularly for a large-scale project based in Aurora, IL, where the City of Aurora is retrofitting an older stormwater management system with several new green technologies, including infiltration catch basins and rain gardens.  We are using this infrastructure project as a natural experiment to compare the mosquito-borne disease risk before and after this improvement project, both in the treated area and in a comparable "control" neighborhood.  The Sustainability Fellowship also provided much needed support while pursuing external research funds.  During the award period, we have received two external awards in support of this research.  First, we have received a $30,000 grant from the North Central Integrated Pest Management Center of the USDA to convene a working group to analyze the impacts of green stormwater infrastructure on the ecology of mosquito-borne disease.  Eliana Brown has been invited to join the working group.  Second, we received $158,600 from the Vector Biology panel at NIH to support the ongoing study in Aurora, IL.  All of these accomplishments were made possible due to the generous support of the Sustainability Fellowship.
     

  9. Integrated Pest Management - Funding Letter

    This proposal looks to implement a two-year enhanced Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan to assist University Housing with pest management needs, while reducing pest management costs, reducing students’ exposure to pests and pesticides, and promoting environmental stewardship. The project goals include: (1) Collaboration on a pilot IPM plan between University Dining Services and Terminix to evaluate IPM practices and identify possible ways to reduce pesticide applications in the dormitories food service areas; (2) Developing educational materials for students, parents and others regarding pest management and notifications of any pest related issues (some materials will be used for University-owned apartment residents and others for dormitories) in collaboration with University Housing; The project lead currently has a $30,000 grant from USDA National Institute for Food and Agriculture to promote school integrated pest management in Illinois. The Student Sustainability Committee is in favor of supporting a matching funds grant in the amount of $30,000 to be used only for activities at University-owned facilities at the Urbana campus.
