  5. SSC Funding Agreement - Eco Olympics

    Eco-Olympics

    SSC approved a $200 micro grant to Eco-Olympics for digital signage in the residential halls. These signs will display progress and energy savings.

    "Eco-Olympics is an energy saving competition between the dorms. Residents sign up for teams which then participate in activities led by hall captains to earn points. Energy use also translates into points, and less energy used means more points. At the end of the three week competition, the team with the most points is declared the winner and members of that team receive a prize."

  6. SSC Funding Agreement - Design for America

    SSC approved a $500 micro grant proposal for Design for America's Social Hack event.

    "During this event, you will learn about the human-centered design process, the methods of creating a circular solution, and finish by applying these concepts and creating your own solution. Come by yourself or with a team to learn  about this initiative and create a solution of your own!This event is open to everyone, whether a student or community member. You don't need to have prior knowledge or have a specific major; we are here to share these insights with you! Lunch will be provided."

  7. SSLC Seeks Vice President

    Student Sustainability Leadership Council (SSLC)

    We are looking for a UIUC student who is passionate, excited, and driven to work towards solutions to environmental issues here on campus and in the greater CU community to serve as the Vice President of SSLC for 2018-2019! This student should be willing to help organize and facilitate the networking and collaboration of the members and RSOs represented on this council, which may include tasks such as:

    1. Leading and contributing to open discussions on ideas and potential events to promote sustainable initiatives.
    2. Providing insightful thoughts about how to best encourage collaboration between sustainability RSOs on campus.
    3. Representing the student voice to university administration through committee meetings.

    Specific duties of the Vice President may include:

    1. Taking notes of prominent ideas discussed at meetings.
    2. Following up with Council members regarding their ideas and events.
    3. Leading Council meetings in the absence of the President.
    4. Managing the Council listserv.
    5. Co-planning and co-implementing programming, such as guest speakers, for Council development.

    Prior involvement with the sustainability community on campus is encouraged but not required. While this position is unpaid, course credit (ENVS 491) is available.

    • Communication & interpersonal skills
    • Self-motivated & organized
    • Problem-solver and service-oriented
    • Passion for supporting student leaders and student organizations

  10. SSC Seeks Faculty Advisors

    SSC seeks new Faculty Member-Advisors for the 2018-2019 academic year. Advisors can expect to commit one-hour per week to SSC, including:

    Attending a biweekly one-hour meeting.
    Attending two three-hour voting meetings per semester.
    Providing students with insight & expertise from your professional & research experience.

  15. SSC Funding Agreement - Hives for Beekeeping Club

    As a new student organization on campus, the Beekeeping Club will install and maintain two new bee hives located at the Sustainable Student Farm (SSF). Any honey produced will get sold at the SSF weekly stand on campus. Students will learn beekeeping skills as well as an appreciation for honey production. In addition, having the bees located at SSF will increase crop output, bettering local food production. The allocated funding will go towards the bee hive installation as well as the bees.

    This proposal directly funds:

    1. Fencing

    3. Beekeeping personal safety equipment
    4. Beekeeping supplies

  16. SSC Funding Agreement - Pollinator Signage

    Student Sustainability Committee (SSC)

    This student-led project provides awareness about pollinators around the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign campus. Students will design and install signage inside and outside of campus buildings, giving facts about native plants and pollinators. This signage will be approved by the University Board as well as Facilities & Services. This project contributes to the campus goal of becoming Bee Campus USA certified and meets Illinois Climate Action Plan objectives. Students will learn more about pollinators and pollinator efforts on campus. The allocated funding will go towards the signage costs.

  17. SSC Funding Agreement - Off Grid Solar Kiln

    This student-driven project provides an alternative drying source for slabbed and dimensional lumber as opposed to industrial kiln drying. The goal is to recycle an air and water tight shipping container to create a de-humidifying kiln powered by passive solar energy. In a joint venture between the School of Architecture and the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, students will develop a knowledge of drying characteristics of various wood species. Students will learn about the moisture peaks in the drying process as well as how wood may become compromised structurally under pressure. The allocated funding will purchase the retired shipping container, solar panels, as well as other kiln materials.
