  2. bike parking review meeting

    FY12 SSC Bike Parking Upgrades [ARCHIVED]

    Stacey DeLorenzo, Amelia Neptune, Morgan Johnston, and Noel Grove met to review the bike parking estimates for this project.  There are a few locations where the pavement is in terrible condition, so we discussed options for handling those locations.  The racks could be installed on rails, or the pavement could be replaced.  There were also a few locations where there are conflicting major projects occuring in the near future.  Stacey will talk to the project managers for those sites to work through the solutions for the bike parking installation.

    Additionally, this project includes the installation of one bike fix-it station at Allen Hall.  Amelia began this work and Stacey will take it over now.  Stacey and Amelia will meet with Sean Sullivan in the SSC to provide him with an update.  Noel Grove will provide cost break downs with the pavement work separate from the bike rack installation work.  He will also contact the Iron Workers to discuss options for racks on rails built in-house.

    Parking Lot Construction Comparisons

      Between September 2011 and August 2012 the Parking Department undertook 2 surface lot construction projects.  Each of the two projects were different by nature but a comparison of the projects demonstrates the following results:

    Lot C-9 (Bid Project)

    Parking lot C-8 was a project to create a parking area between existing lot C-8 and lot C-9.

    • Permeable asphalt lot built on rock base.
    • Project initiated March 2010, Completed January 2012
    • 2 new lights
    • No planting islands
    • No demolition of existing parking lot
    • 1 connecting walk
    • No curbs
    • Paint stripes
    • Sewer line

    Lot E-15 West (Design and Build In House by F&S)

    • Large areas of demolition, removals including curbs, planting islands and old pavement
    • Rebuild rock base
    • Re-wire/new underground service for lights.
    • 2 large concrete planting islands
    • Replacement and expansion of concrete connecting walks
    • Replace large central drive with new concrete drive
    • Remove and rebuild concrete east entrance
    • Paint stripe
    • 4 sewers rebuilt
    • Landscaping in planters and around perimeter

    150 spaces

    Duration of project 4 months

    Surface life expectancy 50+ years

    Total Final Cost $198,720

    Cost per space $1,325

     

  6. F&S internal meeting to address EV charging stations

    Install Public Use Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations

    Jack Dempsey, Pete Varney, Michelle Winters, Pam Voitik, and Morgan Johnston met to discuss options for supporting EV charging stations for public use on campus.  It is unethical to allow UI resources to be used for personal needs, so the UI power cannot be freely distributed to Electric Vehicle owners.  A public charging station will need to include a payment mechanism.  Michelle Winters and Morgan Johnston will work on a plan for implementing public EV charging stations on campus.

  7. New Shop Manager Hired for Campus Bicycle Shop

    James Roedl has been hired as the new Campus Bicycle Shop Manager, replacing Ken Sutto.  James' first day of work is May 28, 2013. Ken's last day is June 14, 2013, giving the two managers roughly 3 weeks of overlap for training and orientation. The shop will remain open during regular hours, Monday-Thursday, 2-6pm and Friday, 2-5:30pm. The Campus Bicycle Shop Manager reports to the Sustainability Coordinator in Facilities & Services (Morgan Johnston), and is funded jointly by the University and The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign.   9. Bike fix-it station update

    Hi Vonne,

    As you may recall, earlier in the school year we had discussed that there is some funding for a new bicycle repair station near Allen Hall/CRCE. The original location we proposed near Gregory Drive in front of CRCE was rejected by the Architecture Review Committee, and they have proposed a better location near the bike parking area in front of Allen Hall. I would like to get your OK on this location before we move forward.

    The first attached PDF shows the location proposed by the Architecture Review Committee. As you’ll see in the photos on pages 2 and 3, it is on existing pavement, close to the bike parking, but not blocking a walkway, which I think is ideal.

    The second PDF shows the specifications of the newly designed repair stations so you know what it would look like. The new design is much smaller and (in my opinion) more attractive than the existing repair stations we have elsewhere on campus. The blue color of the existing stations is no longer available, so our plan is to match the color of the adjacent bike parking, in this case black.

    Please let me know if Housing has any objections to this location, or would like to meet there in person to discuss it further. Once I have your approval, we’ll move forward placing the order and installing this summer.  Please let me know if there are any questions.

  11. Funding request submitted to SSC for FY14

    Campus Bike Center

    F&S requested $30,266 funding from the SSC for the Campus Bicycle Shop for fiscal year 2014.  The funding was awarded, contingent on not requesting additional funding in future years.

    According to the funding award letter, "Because SSC grants are intended as seed or bridge funding, this grant was approved with the understanding that this project will not seek SSC funding in future years."

  13. Traffic Skills 101 Course to be Offered on May 4, 2013

    League of American Bicyclists Courses

    Traffic Skills 101 (TS101) will be offered May 4 from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. at the C-U Mass Transit District, 1101 E. University, Urbana. The course is designed to give cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. Bicycle safety checks, fixing a flat, on-bike skills, and crash avoidance techniques will be covered. The curriculum is fast-paced and prepares cyclists for a full understanding of vehicular cycling. It is recommended for children and adults over the age of 14.

  14. Free Cycling Savvy Course to be Offered April 25, 2013

    Cycling Savvy Courses

    Another Cycling Savvy course will be offered April 25. The course will take place in the Natural Resources Building, Room 101, 615 E. Peabody, Champaign, IL. There’s no charge for Cycling Savvy, which is open to anyone 15 years and older. No amount of cycling experience is required.

    Cycling Savvy will use a guided discussion, photos, illustrations, animations, and videos to educate attendees about safe and effective biking. The course will be divided into three sections: Knowledge of the Law, Knowledge of Bicycling Safety, and Knowledge of Traffic Cycling Problem Solving. Knowledge of the Law will cover the legal rights and responsibilities of cyclists. Knowledge of Bicycling Safety will discuss the causes of bicycle crashes and how to avoid them. This portion will also show that cycling is safe. The third portion, Knowledge of Traffic Cycling Problem Solving, will assess several traffic cycling situations and how a savvy cyclist negotiates such situations.

  17. Draft 2013 Campus Bike Plan Released for public comment

    The draft 2013 Campus Bike Plan is now available for public input. The draft plan will be online during a four-week period, March 4-31, and all members of the campus community are encouraged to review the plan and submit their feedback to TDM.  Feedback can be submitted through the online Campus Bicycle Feedback Form through March 31, 2013. 

  19. Registration now open for Bicycle Mechanic Course

    Registration is now open for the six-week Bicycle Mechanic Course offered by the Campus Bicycle Shop! Space is extremely limited, and there is a $30 course fee.  The class will run from February 6-March 13  and again from March 27-May 1.  Register  in person for either session at the Campus Bike Shop today to reserve your spot!  For more information contact Ken Sutto, Campus Bike Shop Manager, at 217-300-0296 or kensutto@illinois.edu or come by the Campus Bike Shop during open hours (2 to 6pm Monday -Thursday and 2 to 5:30 Friday). 

     

    “So You Want to Work on Bikes” is a six-part course designed to teach you about different types of  bicycles, their components, and how to do most adjustments, maintenance, and overhauls on your bicycle’s major systems.

    This six-week course runs February 6-March 13 and will be held on Wednesday nights, from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the Campus Bike Shop. There are only five spots in the course, and registration is first come, first served until all five spots are filled. There is a $30 course fee, with all the money going towards The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign. This six-week course will be held again from March 27-May 1, and registration for the second course is also currently open (again, first come first served).

    If you wish to register please come by the Campus Bike Shop to sign up and pay the deposit as soon as you can.
