  2. Campus Sustainability Funds to Support Cover Crops

    The following is an email conversation between Adam Davis, Morgan White, and Jen Fraterrigo.

    On June 29, 2023 Adam sent the following email:

    Good morning, Jen and Morgan

    The REC staff has asked me whether there will be any Campus Sustainability funds to support cover crops this year? I’m wondering whether last year’s request was considered and approved? We would like to increase the acres of Crop Sciences research ground that’s in cover crops, and could use some financial support in purchasing more cover crop seed.

    When would funding need to be available?

    The sooner the better—we need to purchase more cover crop seed, which will take 3-4 weeks for delivery. Planting would happen towards the end of September, so funds by early to mid-August would be important to get it done this year.

    On July 7, 2023 Jen replied:

    Hi Adam,

    The Sustainability Council was supportive of increasing land planted with cover crops; however, it is not a funding body and therefore cannot support this effort financially. If the department or college cannot provide funding, I suggest applying for funding from the SSC Green Fund. Unfortunately, the timing may not work for this year.

    Thanks for this suggestion, Jen. We’ll self-support the increase in seed this cycle, and put in an application to the SSC green fund for next growing season.

    The Illinois Impact Incubator is a co-curricular incubation program for students (all majors, levels) to develop an idea or early-stage venture focused on social or environmental impact. Includes a startup curriculum with workshops, curated resources, peer feedback, access to mentors and expert advisors. Members are eligible for micro grants and seed funding. Individuals or small teams may apply.

  8. ECBS SWATeam Meeting Minutes

    At the ECBS SWATeam's third meeting of FY17, the members discussed methods for how the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) can become more sustainable. For example, there are lighting opportunities at Irwin Practice Facility and at Atkins tennis center. In addiiton, Mike Marquissee, director of Budget, Research and Planning for energy services, presented a mini-lecture (also attached) to the team on their funding options and predicted budget for FY18. The SWATeam then discussed how the grant cuts will impact their iCap progress, as well as what needs to be prioritized in terms of funding. Finally, updates on programs such as the Green Labs Coordinator and Illini Lights out were presented.

  9. senate resolution in support of 2015 iCAP

    Ben McCall gave a short presentation for the Faculty Senate about the iCAP, its history, and its energy-related objectives.  There were a few questions, followed by rather surprising applause and a very kind thank-you from the Chancellor.

    A resolution from the Senate Committee on Campus Operations in support of the 2015 iCAP and recommending "that the administration make it a top priority to allocate funding and human resources to the full and rapid implementation of the goals of the 2015 Illinois Climate Action Plan while maintaining the tradition of excellence in scholarly activities that define the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a world-leading research and teaching institution" passed unanimously!! 

  11. House Bill 2427

    House Bill 2427, once signed by the Governor, will authorize a $30M renewable energy fund in Illinois.


    Replaces everything after the enacting clause. Amends the Illinois Power Agency Act to provide for a supplemental procurement process for the procurement of renewable energy certificates from new or existing photovoltaics. Authorizes the expenditure of up to $30,000,000 from the Illinois Power Agency Renewable Energy Resources Fund for that purpose. Provides that renewable energy certificates from new photovoltaics that are procured pursuant to the supplemental procurement process must be procured from devices installed by a person who meets certain qualifications. Requires public hearings. Provides for a procurement administrator, a procurement monitor, pre-qualification of bidders, establishment of standard contract terms, benchmarks, and contingencies in the event of a default by a supplier. Effective immediately.
