    Ainsley Hanner and Hatoon Bashanfar, co-chairs of the Society of Women Engineers Illinois Diversity Committee, hosted the iSEE TED Talk: Eco-Edition on December 9 from 6 - 7 PM. The discussion focused on diversity and representation in the environmental movement and activism. The presentation of the event is attached.

    Sakshi Vaya hosted the iSEE January TED Talk: Eco-Edition around the topic of sustainability and equality in education on Monday, January 24 from 6 - 7 PM. The presentation is attached. 

    The TED Talk: Eco-Edition series is designed to unite campus and community members for a passionate, respectful, and thought-provoking dialogue about a certain aspect of sustainability.     America Recycles Day

    iSEE's November TED Talk: Eco-Edition event was held on America Recycles Day, November 15, 2021! Nichole Millage (City of Champaign Environmental Sustainability Specialist) and Susan Monte (Champaign County Planner and Recycling Coordinator) led a thought-provoking discussion on the importance of recycling and our role in reducing waste and being part of the solution for solving our plastic pollution problem. The TED Talk by Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff, “Trash is Ruining Recycling” highlighted new innovations and a mindset pivot where we no longer fuel the supply and demand cycle of single-use and non-sustainable items. I encourage you all to share the TED Talk, the presentation (attached), and other information and resources with your colleagues, friends, and families. Continue the conversation and share ideas on our Facebook group, Waste Reduction @ Illinois!

    There are no shortage of resources, documentaries, and information on our waste problem and potential solutions, and we applaud you for staying engaged and informed! Helping to keep the momentum going and spreading the word is a great place to start. Here are a few additional resources that were published this month:

  7. New Take on "TED"

    Led by Sustainability Programs Manager Meredith Moore, iSEE has been drawing dozens of campus and community members to participate in monthly ‘TED Talk: Eco-Editions.’

    One evening a month on Zoom, these iSEE Certified Green Events take on a different sustainability issue — from discussions of climate justice to waste reduction to plenty more.

    A pre-recorded TED Talk is shown, then a student, staff, or faculty member leads participants through a discussion and roundtable as our community explores how a topic can apply to campus, work, or everyday life.

    Campus Sustainability Month is right around the corner and we are very excited to invite you to a series of events throughout the entire month of October! Starting this week, Wednesday, September 29 at 6:00 PM, Dr. Ann Perry-Witmer is hosting the next TED Talk: Eco-Edition series over Zoom. She will present a pre-recorded TED Talk and lead a discussion on sustainable decision-making in everyday life - you won’t want to miss out. Register HERE. 

    Next, back by popular demand, the second Waste Reduction Challenge begins on Monday, October 4. Participants track items they throw away from October 4 – October 31 to learn about and reduce individual waste generation as the month progresses. It is a fun and results-driven challenge with a supportive community. Throughout the month, we send helpful tips and tricks to make it as easy and informative as possible. Sign up HERE.

  10. Upcoming TED Talk: Sustainable Decision-Making

    Join us for the latest edition of iSEE's popular Zoom series, which will focus on "Sustainable Decision-Making." Participants will watch a prerecorded TED Talk by Catherine Mohr, "The Tradeoffs of Building Green," then join in a thought-provoking discussion led by Ann-Perry Witmer, research scientist at the Grainger College of Engineering Applied Research Institute and lecturer in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering.

    The event will take place on Wednesday, September 29th, 2021 at 6 PM CST.

  11. TED Talk: Eco-Edition - Environmental Action - Resources!

    The August TED Talk: Eco-Edition event on environmental action was a great conversation to kick off a new semester at Illinois! Alexandra Gergova was a terrific host at the event and showed an inspiring TED Talk by Majora Carter, “Greening the ghetto”. Learn more about Majora’s work and environmental activism here. In addition to the resources outlined in Alex’s presentation (see attached), below are additional and resources that were shared during the conversation:

    I hope that you enjoyed the discussion on Tuesday evening and that you learned about a new opportunity or way to take action and get involved.   14. Upcoming energy-themed events

    YOU are invited to iSEE's monthly TED Talk: Eco-Edition series discussion. Tomorrow (Tuesday), July 27 at 5:30 PM, Paul Foote, F&S Energy Efficiency and Conservation Specialist, will host the event and lead the July discussion on energy conservation. We will view a pre-recorded TED Talk , "The four things you need to know about the energy you use", followed by a guided discussion and roundtable. All are welcome to this (fun!)     Additionally on the topic of sustainable energy, this summer the University of Illinois Extension is hosting a series of free and online webinars on the topic of geothermal energy. There are three upcoming sessions at noon on the following dates (click the links to learn more and register): July 29 (Geothermal Energy in Illinois), on August 10 (Campus Case Study, highlighting ten existing campus geothermal projects), and August 12 (Community Case Study).

    We had a fantastic June TED Talk: Eco-Edition discussion on water conservation on 6/24! Attached is Vica Otrubina’s presentation. After watching Kelsey Leonard’s TED Talk, “Why lakes and rivers should have the same rights as humans”, Vica did a terrific job hosting the group discussion. I have been thinking about the question she posed, “Corporations are recognized to have ‘human rights’. Do you think it’s possible for us to extend these rights to water/air/etc.?” since the conversation yesterday. Stay tuned for our July conversation by signing up for the iSEE newsletter and continuing the conversation on the Waste Reduction @ Illinois Facebook group.     Hello all and happy Sunday! We have our next TED Talk: Eco-Edition event on the topic of water conservation and policy on Thursday! Vica Otrubina, a graduate student in Civil & Environmental Engineering, is this month’s host. She will be showing a pre-recorded TED Talk from December 2019 by Kelsey Leonard, “Why lakes and rivers should have the same rights as humans” followed by a guided discussion. I am really looking forward to this topic and hope you are able to join!

  19. Weekly Update: Summer hours, Donations, iSEE Ted Talk

    All, This week’s report is delayed as I was off last week.

    From the 10th – 14th we had some volunteer interest, slightly busier times, and some more donations. Just today we received another batch of donations: tires/tubes, a wheel, and whole lot of jerseys/clothing that we likely will not be able to even give away. I’ll reach out to some cycling clubs and see if they’re interested.

    This week we’ll be debuting our new hours of M/W/F 2 – 6p. These will be our hours all summer, effective immediately. iSEE is hosting a Zoom TedTalk thing on Wednesday and tonight is TBPs member meeting.

    I’ll be understaffed to start the summer as one of my summer workers got an internship and won’t be available after all. I’ll work on drumming up some more help this week.

    • Climate Crisis Policy/Earth Bill Network is an umbrella organization wrangling in all other US environmental orgs to create one comprehensive Earth Bill to present to President Biden (http://www.climatecrisispolicy.org/). IMO their approach to passing federal policy is more inclusive, unified, and broader than Citizens’ Climate Lobby (which is another big lobbying org). The Earth Bill Network would love to have some college student volunteers working to create a college/university student network for the Earth Bill. If anyone is interested, they should check out the website and register at https://climatecrisispolicy.org/registration/, noting how they would like to volunteer.
