    • The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign formally committed to sustainability in February 2008, when Chancellor Richard Herman signed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment with Second Nature, pledging to be carbon neutral by 2050. 
    • Illinois was the first Big Ten university to submit a climate action plan to Second Nature. The 2010 iCAP was approved by Interim Chancellor Robert Easter on May 10, 2010.
    • The iCAP Portal was established in May 2012 to track and share updates on campus sustainability progress.
    • Chancellor Phyllis Wise approved the Formal Procedures for Campus Sustainability in June 2014, creating the Sustainability Working Advisory Teams (iCAP Topical Teams) and the iCAP Working Group.
    • Interim Chancellor Barbara Wilson approved the 2015 iCAP and signed the Resilience Commitment with Second Nature.  Second Nature renamed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate commitment as the Carbon Commitment. As a signatory to both commitments, this campus is a signatory to the “Climate Leadership Commitments” at Second Nature.
    • The current version, iCAP 2020, was signed by Chancellor Robert R. Jones.  It includes 56 specific SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based) objectives, organized into eight themes: Energy, Transportation, Land & Water, Zero Waste, Education, Engagement, Resilience, and Implementation. The latest updates on this effort are listed above, from the iCAP Portal project updates available at the iCAP page on the Insititute for Sustainability, Energy, & Environment (iSEE) website.
    • The next iCAP will be released in Fall 2025.

    On February 22, 2008, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign signed the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). This action committed the campus to carbon neutrality by the year 2050 (see the University's official commitment pledge here). This Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP) describes a path toward the fulfillment of this commitment.

    As concern grows about climate change and the effects on health, social, economic, and ecological well-being of our world, the University of Illinois is in a prime position to be at the forefront of battling the negative impacts associated with climate change. The University of Illinois hosts high-caliber researchers and experts in diverse fields across campus and seeks to become a leader in sustainability efforts locally, nationally, and globally.

    Goals

    The ultimate goal of the ACUPCC Climate Commitment is for campuses to be "climate neutral" with no unmitigated greenhouse gas emissions.  The Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP) was first submitted in May 2010, and it set aggressive goals for reaching carbon neutrality. 

    As the flagship public university in the state of Illinois, the campus has a moral and ethical responsibility to lead, to set aggressive goals, to work to meet them, and to serve as a model for the community, state, and nation.  The iCAP represents a roadmap to a new, prosperous, and sustainable future for the University. It outlines strategies, initiatives, and targets toward meeting the stated goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

    Sustainability Day Event: An update on the Illinois Climate Action Plan

    It is time to evaluate — and update — the Illinois Climate Action Plan, our campus sustainability roadmap. The campus and local community is invited to join iSEE on Sustainability Day, Oct. 22, for an iCAP Forum from 1 to 4 p.m. in Illini Union Room 314B.     iSEE leaders provided an introduction to the SSLC

    Six Objectives: Facilitate communication, facilitate collaboration, provide a forum for student leaders to voice their opinions to iSEE and thereby to the campus administration, help identify students who can serve on iSEE working groups or advisory groups, help identify potential interns, encourage more awareness about sustainability among student body

    Unofficial objective: Create political will/pressure to implement sustainability initiatives

  9. University of Illinois award application for continuous improvement

    The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was submitted (and later recognized) in the continuous improvement category for the Illinois Governor's Sustainability Award in 2013.  It is clear that this campus is serious about meeting our commitment to be carbon neutral by 2050.  This was emphasized this year, when “Energy, Environment, and Sustainability” was identified as a top priority for the Urbana-Champaign campus.  Through the many iCAP projects completed and in progress, the campus is becoming a better steward of our financial, human, and natural resources.  Our goal is to be the model of sustainability for campuses across the globe.

    Use Clean Power

    In May 2010, iCAP was completed with the following goals (for the wind project):

    • Goal is to eventually make the U of I carbon neutral by 2050
    • Describes a path toward the fulfillment of the commitment of the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (signed by University in 2008)
    • Among the commitment the University is making in order to achieve carbon neutrality goal is renewable energy
    • Target: “Strive to meet the requirements for renewable energy generation in the ILRPS both on campus (priority) and off campus (if necessary) as follows:
      • 5 percent of total campus energy from renewable sources by fiscal year 2015
      • 17.5 percent of total campus energy from renewable sources by fiscal year 2020
      • 25 percent of total campus energy from renewable sources by fiscal year 2025
      • End coal usage at Abbott Power Plant by 2017”
    • Among the 5 strategies to do this: “Install at least three utility-scale wind turbines on the south campus, with a minimum of one to be installed by 2011”
