  2. Recycling Bin Update 04/01/24

    Associated Project(s):

    Hi Todd & Mark,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to reach out & reconnect on the topic of the black, metal outdoor bins. I believe we have 18 identified locations approved by Brent Lewis ready to be installed as soon as the shops are able (locations attached) – these all require concrete poured. We then have  ~56 more stored primarily in the Buenting Barn that we have not yet identified locations for, but will very shortly. Some of them will require concrete and others will not. We have WO# 10814481 for this project.  Pete is hoping to have the whole process wrapped up by June 30, 2024. I just wanted to put this back up on the radar and get a sense of whether we will be able to get these all installed by summer?

I will be in contact soon regarding the locations of the remaining bins.

    Thank you!
    Daphne

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good morning Daphne,  Mark forwarded your email to me.  When you send the lists of locations out, please be sure to copy all that are on this email.

In response to your question below of completion by June 30 that is not possible.  Also, without knowing all of the locations it is difficult to give you an answer as to what the completion timeframe would be.  Below are the two scenarios depending on the proposed locations of the bins.

Installing the bins on existing concrete:

     1.   Ironworkers can go to the site with the bins/post with two guys and install the anchors and the bins in 2-3 crew hours (4-6 hours total with two guys).

Installing the bins on newly placed concrete:

     1.  This process will begin with the labor supervisor going to the site and marking the location.  1-2 hours
     2.  The utility marking crew would then be notified, and they have a 48 hour window to locate utilities.  1-2 hours
     3.  Laborers and operators go to the site and dig out the spot and place rock. 3-4 crew hours
     4.  Cement finishers form and pour the concrete and it needs to cure for at least 48 hours.  3-4 crew hours
     5.  Ironworkers can install the anchors and the bin once concrete has cured. 2-3 crew hours

Depending on how closely the locations are to each other they may prepare 2 or 3 at once and rotate through those with the different steps above.  However, that is not always possible.

I hope this helps to see how the two differ in time needed and to see how it really gets involved when the location requires new concrete.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

       Thank you,

     [Illinois]

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hi all,

I am sharing out 11 more locations which have been approved by Brent & Stacey. Please see attached, and please let me know if I can provide any additional information. I will continue to send out locations as I receive approval.

    Thank you,
    Daphne

    Justin,

You can have Burzin work on this when he comes in, if you like.

    Thanks

    Chad

    Hi all,

We have completed all outdoor bin location proposals. With all the photos it is a large document, so I have placed it on a shared Box. Please let me know if any of these locations need further clarification.

    Thank you,
    Daphne

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Daphne and Tim,

Once the additional bin locations are approved for installation let us know and we will get them added/updated in GIS.

    Tim,

As your team completes installs let us know and we will collect “as-installed” location plus an image for GIS.

    Daphne,

We’ve added the dual bins installed to date along with an image to GIS…(sample below)

  5. Brent Lewis approves 17 more dual bin locations

    Associated Project(s):

On July 18th, Brent Lewis approved 16 more sites for installation, and the site on Champaign property was approved on July 6. On September 6th, these 17 sites plus the 7 additional sites sent to earlier this summer on June 7th (the eighth site at Siebel Center for Computer Science was installed on August 1st, so it was omitted from this spreadsheet), were sent to the iron workers for a total of 24 sites.

55 dual bins remain in storage and need site proposals from the zero waste team and approval from Brent Lewis.

    Stacey,

I’ve looked into this and there is no issue with you replacing the existing concrete can.  Please just minimize its encroachment into the walking path.

    Thanks,

    Hi Morgan,

You and Brent approved a dual bin installation site at 6th St and Daniel, near the Psychology Building. The new dual bin would face west and be located up against the building on existing concrete. Could we receive confirmation from the City of Champaign that this location is okay?

    Thank you,
    Daphne

  9. June 5 update meeting

    Associated Project(s):

Morgan White, Daphne Hulse, & Sinead Soltis met to review the completed outdoor bin survey, which maps out the bins currently installed on campus and can be found in an ArcGIS online format. Over the next two weeks, the sites with a proposed bin installation will be finalized to resume installation. A follow-up meeting will be held Wednesday, June 7th, to better understand what is needed to get work order started. As a note, about 40 bins have been installed out of the 74 ordered.

Update from Daphne Hulse 6/9/23: 43 dual bins were counted as installed on campus currently. A visit to storage showed that there are currently 80 dual bins still palletized (128 individual bins (64 pairs) located in PPSB shed and 32 individual bins (16 pairs) located outside near shed) and waiting for installation. According to the attached outdoor bin memo, 130 bins were originally purchased. We have 123 bins total accounted for (installed and palletized). 7 bins are unaccounted for. They may have been damaged/replaced.

News for EPA SmartWay Partners and Stakeholders

EPA Seeks Public Input on $1 Billion Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicle, $3 Billion Clean Ports and other Inflation Reduction Act Programs

EPA is seeking public input on new and existing programs funded by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), including a new $1 billion Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicle program and $3 billion Clean Ports program. Under the Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicle EPA will be offering grants and/or rebates to replace heavy-duty vehicles with zero-emission vehicles, support zero-emission vehicle infrastructure, and to train and develop workers. Under the Clean Ports program EPA will offer grants for the purchase and installation of zero emission technologies to reduce pollution at ports, and to develop qualified climate action plans.

EPA has published a Request for Information (RFI) seeking public input on core design aspects for these and other programs supported by IRA. The RFI provides background information on each IRA program and a series of questions for the public to consider as they provide input. The RFIs are open for public comment through January 18, 2023. Public input and information will be used to inform the development of the programs in addition to other stakeholder engagement activities that EPA will be conducting consistent with its Grant Competition policy. For more information and to provide input on the Clean Heavy-Duty, Clean Ports and other IRA programs, visit www.epa.gov.

EPA Publishes Final Rule to Control Air Pollution from Heavy-Duty Trucks

On December 20, EPA issued a final rule "Control of Air Pollution from New Motor Vehicles: Heavy-Duty Engine and Vehicle Standards," that adopts new, stronger emissions standards to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from heavy-duty vehicles and engines starting in model year 2027. The new emissions standards cover a wider range of heavy-duty engine operating conditions compared to today's standards, and the rule requires these more stringent emissions standards to be met for a longer period of time when these engines operate on the road. The new rule and tighter standards will result in widespread air quality improvements across the U.S., especially in areas already overburdened by air pollution and emissions.

The final rule is one of three major actions being taken under EPA's "Clean Trucks Plan." Under this plan, the Agency intends to propose two additional rulemakings in 2023 which, when considered cumulatively with this final rule, would put in place more protective long-term standards that would reduce smog, soot, and climate pollution from heavy-duty vehicles and would include consideration of greater adoption of zero-emissions vehicle technologies. For more information on EPA's Clean Trucks Plan, and the new rule to limit NOx emissions from heavy-duty commercial vehicles, visit www.epa.gov.
