  8. PWR016 Motion Sensor Lighting - Submittal

The PWR SWATeam compiled the following recommendation:

"The PWR & ECBS SWATeams kindly request the installation of Motion Sensor Lighting in all buildings. This would be done gradually so F&S does not become burdened by the switch. The main targets for motion sensor lighting in buildings would be public spaces, lobbies, hallways, stairwells, rest rooms,
    discussion/collaboration spaces, classrooms, etc.
    • In conjunction with ECBS, PWR would like to recommend that all campus buildings be gradually retrofitted to use motion sensor lighting wherever possible, as well as enforce the policy for new buildings and remodels to use motion sensor lighting. We suggest that the installation of motion sensors should be the
default option and to be pursued unless there is a reason not to do so.
    • This switch would occur during mainly during replacement and upgrading of light switches in all buildings and or during remodeling. Such a switch needs to be implemented gradually, replacing the current switches as they stop working or become obsolete, which will lower energy usage.
    • The University would procure the motion sensors through a contracted vendor like Grainger or HD Supply. Ordering in bulk, which would give Purchasing more leverage to negotiate a bulk discount."

See attached the SWATeam recommendation PWR016 Motion Sensor Lighting with comments from PWR SWATeam members.

An iCAP Working Group assessment of this recommendation began on July 2, 2019.

  10. PWR013 Zero Waste Coordinator recommendation - Successful

Dr. Mohamed Attalla, Executive Director of Facilities & Services, responded via email to iSEE Associate Director of Sustainability Ximing Cai affirming the intent of F&S to hire a full-time Zero Waste Coordinator:

"We have reviewed the PWR013 Zero Waste Coordinator SWATeam Recommendation and iCAP Working Group Assessment, and we will proceed with hiring a full-time Zero Waste Coordinator.

The key responsibilities for this position will be to “educate the campus on recycling, and to push for systemic changes to improve campus recycling” as suggested by the iWG. This position will report to Pete Varney and work closely with Morgan White.  Additionally, once the position is filled, that person will serve as the F&S staff person on the Purchasing, Waste, and Recycling SWATeam."

  14. ECONS007 Energy Conservation Funding 2018 - Returned to SWATeam

After the iWG meeting on September 17, 2018, Dr. Cai sent the following response to the SWATeam regarding ECONS007:

    Dear ECBS SWATeam,

Thank you for your strong commitment to campus sustainability.  The iCAP Working Group met on Monday this week and discussed the ECONS007 Recommendation (https://icap.sustainability.illinois.edu/project-update/econs007-energy-conservation-funding-2018-recommendation-submittal).

We invited Josh Whitson and Kent Reifsteck to speak with us, and there was a good discussion about the benefits and usefulness of Energy Performance Contracting.  However, the iWG decided that there is not an actionable next step in this recommendation, as it currently stands.  We strongly support campus funding for energy conservation, so we are returning this recommendation to your team for further information.  For example, where do you recommend the suggested funding come from?  Also, are there specific projects identified for the funds in the first year? How will those projects coordinate with other efforts for dealing with deferred maintenance?   The iWG members are willing to discuss this issue with you and Kent’s team further, to strategize ideas.

Please let us know if you would like to arrange a meeting with your SWATeam and members of the iWG.

    Thank you,

    Ximing Cai
