  1. Daily Illini Article: UI introduces no-ride zones for e-bikes amid safety concerns

    Daily Illini published an article on April 20, 2026 titled "UI introduces no-ride zones for e-bikes amid safety concerns". Read the article here: https://dailyillini.com/news-stories/around-campus/2026/04/20/ui-no-ride...

    This article is also attached to this project update.

  2. Old Description

    Associated Project(s):

    The Multimodal Corridor Enhancement (MCORE) project requires the Champaign-Urbana Urbanized AreaTransportation Study (CUUATS) partners to monitor the pedestrian and bicycle counts following the completion of the project. This requirement is to understand the increased walking and bicycling activities at the twelve predetermined corridors. Champaign County Regional Planning Commission (CCRPC) collected pedestrian and cycling counts at these locations before the MCORE project. These twelve corridors/intersections are

    1. Birch Street and Green Street
    2. Lincoln Avenue and Green Street
    3. Goodwin Avenue and Green Street
    4. Illini Union Entrance/Green Street
    5. Wright Street and White Street
    6. Wright Street and Healey Street
    7. Wright Street and John Street
    8. Sixth Street and Armory Avenue
    9. Fourth Street and Armory Avenue
    10. Third Street and White Street
    11. Third Street and Green Street
    12. Locust Street and Green Street

    The University has identified other locations on campus to add pedestrian/bicycle counters as well, other than these twelve MCORE corridors/intersections. In March 2020, the first Eco-Counter pedestrian and bicycle counter was installed at the Illini Union location on Green Street.

    In summer 2021, the Eco-Counters for the intersections of Sixth Street and Armory Avenue and Wright Street and Healey Street will be installed.

  3. Weekly Update -- Sustainapalooza & Sales

    Associated Project(s):

    Busy week, as we had warmer weather and thus more folks into the space, as well as Sustainapalooza on Saturday. Weather turned out pretty good! Staff-made and upcycled keychains out of old bike parts were a freebie at the event and a major hit—gave away almost all 50 of them!

    This week we’ll try to bump our for-sale bikes into the double digits as the queue has not been kind to us—have run into lots of problems on mostly-finished bikes. But that comes with the territory of used bikes. Can’t save ‘em all!

    The numbers:

    Visitors: 88
    Sales: $1,004.25

    Memberships: 13 for $390
    Bikes (refurb): 1 for $225
    Tires/tubes: 27 for $181

    Thanks!

  4. Bike Census Spring 2026 Complete

    Associated Project(s):

    From 11am-12pm, over 20 volunteers helped to count bikes, e-bikes, e-scooters, and VeoRides across campus. The Spring 2026 Bike Census will help to guide future bike infrastructure decisions. Bike census results will be published in a report in Summer 2026 or early Fall 2026.

  5. Weekly Update -- Bike Donations, Sustainapalooza, & Sales

    Associated Project(s):

    We’re inching up in the busyness around here. Visitor numbers reflect that. Elsewhere, we’re working through an influx of kids bike donations that we’ll either store until our winter giveaway or repair for sale this spring/summer. We also got a bike donated back that we sold at least two years ago, if my memory serves.

    This week we have another fix-a-flat class offered (still no takers yet) and will be gearing up for Sustainapalooza on Saturday.

    Hope to get a couple more bikes on the sales floor, too.

    The numbers:

    Visitors: 77

    Sales: $696
    Memberships: 9 for $270
    Bikes (refurb): 1 for $170
    Tires/tubes: 16 for $77

    Thanks!

  6. Final Volunteer Call for Bike Census

    Associated Project(s):
    Bike Census Spring 2026 Tomorrow!

    F&S, along with volunteers, will conduct a Campus Bicycle Census tomorrow on Tuesday, April 14, at 11 a.m. The data collected by the group will be used to identify high-ridership locations for future mobility, safety, and infrastructure improvements, such as bike rack parking upgrades, pathway enhancements, and interactive mapping updates. Previous censuses have counted more than 5,500 parked bicycles on the Urbana campus at one time.

    5 More Volunteers Needed

    Sign up to volunteer for the upcoming census. Instructions will be given during on-site training at 10 a.m. on the day of the event at Anniversary Plaza (south of Illini Union), or during backup session today on Monday, April 13 at 4 pm in the same location, for those who cannot attend the day-of meeting. Volunteers may either bike or walk around the campus to look for off-rack and on-rack bicycles.

      Sign up to Volunteer at this event!

    Micromobility Analysis

    New for the 2026 census, e-bikes/e-scooters and other micromobility devices will also be tracked. This specific snapshot will help F&S to expand and support the U. of I. active transportation network through both the bike share program and by developing more parking and charging options for students, faculty, and staff across the university.

  7. Bike Census Spring 2026 Volunteer Training Sessions

    Associated Project(s):

    During the training sessions, Sarthak went over the volunteer training guide (attached as a pdf below) as well as how to use the ArcGIS Field Maps application to count bikes, e-bikes, VeoRides, and e-scooters.

    Two volunteer training sessions were hosted:

    1. Monday, April 13th from 4-5pm at Anniversary Plaza (south side of Illini Union)

    2. Tuesday, April 14th from 10-11am at Anniversary Plaza (south side of Illini Union)

  8. iCAP Education Team April Meeting

    The iCAP Education Team met on April 13th from 9-10 am via Teams. The group discussed results and updates of the newly updated Undergraduate Levenick Scholars Program, discussed next steps for the Green Career Fair, shared updates on the Undergraduate Levenick Scholars Program, and shared findings of a comparison report of curriculum scores of AASHE stars reporting with similar ranking institutions. The meeting minutes are attached.

  9. Weekly Update -- Bike Center Classes & Sales

    Uneventful week. Pulled some of the salvageable parts off bikes in the containers and should have that project completed by end-of-week.

    Tonight is TBP’s Member Meeting which I will attend.

    This Thursdays is another Fix-a-Flat class. We have signage up in the Bike Center, so hopefully will get some takers for that.

    Thanks!
