Archived Project Description
Associated Project(s):Archived and replaced the following description on Dec. 10, 2017:
In lab buildings, protective gloves can be a major component of the waste stream. For example, at the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC), plastic gloves were found to be over 8% of their total waste by weight. There is a recycling program for nitrile gloves that can be purchased through Fisher Scientific, for Kimberely-Clark nitrile gloves. This program is being implemented at various locations across campus.

Attached Files:Local Grains and Locally Processed Foods for Dining Services
Associated Project(s):The Student Sustainability Committee funded Local Grains and Locally Processed Foods for Dining Services in October 2017.
This project aims at developing methods that promote locally processed grains for U of I students. This project connects to the Vegetable Crop Farm, FSHN Pilot Plant, and Sustainable Student Farm, offering the final puzzle piece required to offer campus grown grains to UIUC community members. This project will purchase reusable containers to transport grains, and other campus products, between campus farms and campus processing facilities. Moreover, project leaders will analyze both taste and nutrients for Vegetable Crop Farm product.
The SSC funding will go directly towards:
- Reusable storage containers
- Analysis equipment

Attached Files:ECBS SWATeam Meeting Minutes
Associated Project(s):The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) is looking to become more involved with the SWATeams and sustainability on campus. ECBS proposed ideas such as decreasing refrigerator usage, making a climate action plan specifically for DIA, and promoting recycling at tailgates. Illini Lights Out had their first event on September 29, and it was a success. 284 light switches were turned off in 13 different buildings. The Green Labs Coordinator position is slowly making progress, but there is a concern with funding. Updates on the ECIP were made, and there is a push being made for mid-year checkpoints in the future. ECBS also discussed if AFMFA projects could be redefined in order to do more maintenance-based projects.
Attached Files:Dibbs students meet with sustainability staff
Associated Project(s):Ximing Cai and Morgan White met with students Sohinee Oswal and Devaki Belwalkar about their food waste reduction app "Dibbs." We discussed the possibility of connecting their efforts with iCAP objectives. They are focused primarily on grocery stores, so the best option for working together is for Dibbs to connect with Dining Services and their convenience stores (Chomps, 57 North, and Penn Station).
Pursuing Resources for Transporting Gloves to Trailer
Associated Project(s):Having a resource to transport gloves from the locations where they are used to the centralized collection point (a trailer at the Physical Plant) would help boost participation in the glove recycling program. Staff and volunteer resources are being explored at present.
Glove recycling informational materials and signage under review
Associated Project(s):Content for an informational flier, web page, and signage to cooridnate and promote the Right Cycle program on campus is drafted and being reviewed.
Glove recycling informational materials and signage under development
Associated Project(s):Development of materials for units that want to participate in the campus glove recycling program is under way. The current plan is to provide a web page with information about the program, a web form for units to let F&S know of their participation, and links to signage and other informational materials.
Discussion at Transportation Building about ECIP funds
Associated Project(s):Morgan Johnston and Shawna Grady met to discuss the potential uses for the Transportation Building's ECIP funding award ($10,000). Options included additional recycling bins, LED lamps, power strips, battery recycling containers, and potentially a waste characterization study for the building (if available through ISTC).
KCPA ECIP funds to go towards several improvements
Associated Project(s):Krannert Center has identified several projects to tackle with the ECIP award funding:
- Recycling Bins and Bags - $5,000 (make in-house recycling efforts more efficient and accessible)
- TCP Switch for Playhouse - $6,000 (electrical safety issue)
- Imop - $5,000 (water conservation)
- Food Services Dishwashers - $9,750 (energy efficiency, water conservation, chemical usage reduction)
- Energy efficient washer and dryers (2 each) for Festival Green Room - $2,250 (energy efficiency, water conservation)
- Ipad mini’s & Ipad & Secure Mounts for Attendant Access to Calendar and Event Sheets - $2,500 (reduce printed paper)
- Reconfigure Stairs to Playhouse Pit - $3,500 (safety issue correction)
The dollar amounts listed are approximations. Any additional funds not used for these items would be allocated to expanding the stock of replacement LED bulbs.
2016 Winners Announced!
Associated Project(s):The 2016 ECIP award winners were announced last Wednesday, and they will be given plaques at the annual Campus Sustainability Celebration this week, 10/16 from 4-6 at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center. Here is the letter.
Congratulations!
We would like to recognize your unit as a 2016 Energy Conservation Incentive Program (ECIP) award winner during the Campus Sustainability Celebration on Wednesday, October 26 from 4-6 p.m. at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center. For planning purposes, please let us know who will be accepting the award(s) on behalf of your unit by Friday, October 21.
Sustainability initiatives are at the core of Illinois’ commitment to its land-grant university mission. The Climate Leadership Commitment pledges the Urbana campus to be carbon neutral by 2050, which requires all students, staff, and employees working together to implement a dynamic, multi-disciplinary approach to campus sustainability.
The ECIP awards began in 2013 as a way to recognize outstanding individual and team efforts that move us closer to reaching our Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP) goals. The ECIP honors occupants of campus buildings that have reduced energy at the greatest level from one year to the next. This year more than $177,000 for improvement projects in winning facilities will be provided through the program.
Everyone researching, learning, and working in these nine buildings is an ECIP winner, and we encourage as many participants to join the celebration as possible. Hosted by Facilities & Services and the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment, the Campus Sustainability Celebration will cover the iCAP objectives, celebrate the diverse sustainability community, and recognize 2016 winners.
We look forward to you and your employees joining us to celebrate the ECIP winners and their contributions toward campus energy conservation.
