Project Updates

  1. Weekly Meeting with Nathaniel and Hrushikesh

On 07/13/2023, Sarthak had a meeting with Nathaniel and Hrushikesh to get a Weekly progress report and to set next week's tasks.

    - Set a structure for Weekly Meetings

    - Discussion on Bike Friendly University (BFU), Bike Racks Locations and their design Plans, Campus Bike Plan 2024, and the Abandoned Bicycles Project.

    - Gave an overview of the i-Cap Portal and Bike Friendly University (BFU) to Nathaniel.

    - Potential Encouragement project on Social Media: Making a Rules of the Road Video.

  2. Splitting item by personal property or university property

    Associated Project(s):

Daphne Hulse on Teams: Thanks for meeting with us yesterday! We're looking forward to it. One thing that Shreya and I discussed this morning, that may not have been a part of earlier Recyclopedia discussions: there are two categories of items that we work with, those that are considered "personal property" and those that are considered "university property", which impacts where items should be disposed. We have less than 10 recyclables that are disposed of through the Waste Transfer Station (ex: cardboard, paper), but there are many more obscure items (ex: mattresses) that would be disposed of elsewhere. It would be useful for our purposes to have a way to clarify this. This could be one of the additional "fields" or perhaps there is a way within the website to split the categorization by "tab," if that makes sense

  3. Meeting on 2023 Champaign County Bike Month Planning

    Associated Project(s):

On 07/12/2023, Sarthak and Hrushikesh were a part of a 2023 Champaign County Bike Month Planning meeting.

    - Confirmed Dates for Upcoming Events:
September 14th – Bike to Work Day
September 19th – Light the Night

    Time - 4p.m to 7p.m (Tentative)
    September 21st – Rain Day

    - Budget for Light the Night

    - Suggestion in the meeting: The system of Veo Rides is bringing in more bike riders in the community.

-* Contact Lily for availability and confirm the dates for the event.

  4. Meeting with Cynthia: Upcoming Events Learn How to Ride a Bicycle

On 07/12/2023, Cynthia (C-U SRTS Project Chair) had a meeting with Sarthak and Hrushikesh to plan and discuss events that will help promote use of bicycle on Campus.

    Meeting Minutes:

    - Youth Cycling Instructor has gone through enough training to help in the event, but is not certified.

    - 2 events will be held initially

    1) Event - Learn to Ride

Date - Tentatively scheduled on 08/12/2023 (Saturday) or 08/12/2023 (Sunday) (Morning preferred)

Location - Basketball Courts near Campus Bike Center

Students - 2-3 students per LCI

Limit to 6 students in Total

*2 Volunteers required (including 1 Mechanical Volunteer @Jake)

    *Electric Bikes not preferred

    2) Basic Bicycling Skills Class - 10-12 people limit

    * For these events Bikes can be made available by Bike Rodeo.

    - Ride Illini Initiative - Bicycle Friendly Businesses can be involved to incentivize use of Bicycles.

  5. F&S ITS team + F&S zero waste meet to discuss next steps

    Associated Project(s):

Attendance: Matthew Fancher, Daphne Hulse, Nikkole Duda, Justin Pryor, Patrick Duda, Steve Breitwieser, Shreya Mahajan

    Introduction:

    • Nikkole: Business Analyst for IT with F&S, keep us on track
    • Matt: Web Developer, original Recyclopedia developer on Sitefinity
    • Justin: Software Developer with F&S
    • Patrick: Application Development with F&S
    • Steve: F&S communications contact working with ITS on the new website
    • Shreya: F&S zero waste intern, had the Recyclopedia initiative passed down to her from a previous intern

    Matt’s two options:

First option (within the existing website):

    • On the back end, the new website we can have a standard set of fields (title, description) whatever set of fields we need that we plug the information into
    • On the front end, it would be a part of the existing website (fs.illinois.edu/recyclopedia)
    • It would be searchable

    Second option (microsite):

    • Would get a URL (recyclopedia.fs.illinois.edu)
    • Have more control over what was on the front page
    • Things could interact differently, and as we wanted them to

    Discussion:

    • Steve thinks content within the F&S website would work well
      • The concern is the image sizing, which has come up on other pages
      • Come up with a style (post-produce) to make the photos more uniform
      • How will this integrate to the Waste Management & Recycling and zero waste and other relevant pages?
    • Time component, we could do the website stuff sooner and think about a microsite later

    Timeline:

    • Daphne proposes during fall semester
    • Matt suggests September 1 would be a wishlist deadline
      • Patrick suggests that the team do an internal review of the deadline and get back to Daphne/Shreya

    Sitefinity

    • Standard set of fields from Sitefinity, will all need to agree if these are kept or if there are more needed — on Microsoft Teams Nikkole will create a team page for everyone so we can overview the fields and agree
    • Steve suggests that we focus on a core amount of items (top 50) first before all of the random abstract stuff
      • We would need someone constantly managing it, if we didn’t cap it somewhere
      • Suggest recycling@illinois.edu as a place to ask additional specific questions for things that are not covered

Nikkole will get us set up on Microsoft Teams, so the ITS group can update us on their progress and receive feedback from us when needed.

    Thank you,
    Daphne

    Subject: D&R August Work Order

    Hi Daphne,

At our last meeting we had discussed F&S continuing to support a couple of the hard costs for the August portion of D&R, soecifically the tables and dumpster. I wanted to reach out to make sure we were on schedule for both of those work orders. For your reference I have attached last year's work order, which I think just needs to be updated with the dates and times for this year. I've listed those changes below.

Additionally, I should have marketing materials for collections and the sale ready by the end of this week, that can be shared with Housing and any other campus units.

Thank you, and let me know if you have any questions!

    -Marc

    Work Order Changes:

    Tables :

    • DROP OFF: Change to MONDAY, 7/31/2023 by 9 AM to the SOUTH SIDE ENTRANCE
    • PICK UP: change to MONDAY, 8/21/23 IN THE AM

    20' pan/dumpster:

    • ON SUNDAY, 8/20/23 IN THE PM (by 3PM), DELIVER A (20) YARD PAN TO THE WEST ENTRANCE OF THE STOCK PAVILION FOR THE "DUMP & RUN" EVENT. PICKUP FOR RETURN ON TUESDAY, 8/22/23 IN THE AM
  7. Times Higher Education Impact Rankings

    Associated Project(s):

    Hi Jen & Morgan,

At the BTAF sustainability network meeting this morning, MSU highlighted the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking, oriented around the 17 UN SDGs. SDG 11, “sustainable cities and communities,” ranks universities by their sustainable impact. MSU ranked #14 in the world. To be included in these rankings the universities must apply. We had not heard of this before and thought that this might be something worth pursuing, perhaps appropriate for Meredith’s successor.

    Thank you!
    Daphne

    --------------------------

Interesting. I took a brief look – it seems universities can be ranked across any of the 17 SDGs. Rankings are based on research, teaching, and campus and local actions. I can talk this over with Madhu but I don’t see why we would not want to participate in the rankings, aside from the effort required to gather and submit data. From what I could determine, there is no fee to participate.

    Thanks,

    Jen

  8. Meeting with Adam Bleakney: Discussion on Campus Bike Plan and ADA Compliance for Bike Paths on Campus

    Associated Project(s):

On 07/10/2023 Sarthak and Hrushikesh had a meeting with Adam Bleakney (Disability Sports Coach at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign)

    Meeting Notes:

    - Introduced Adam about the Campus Bike Plan

    - His Suggestions:

    - The Athletes take mainly two routes for training, primary route starting from Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES) to Stadium Dr, S 1st St, E Peabody, S 4th St, St Marys Rd, S Oak St, W Kirby Ave and back to S 1st St forming a Loop/ Circuit. Thus, maintenance of this circuit is vital.

    - Secondary route consists of E Peabody, S 6th St, E Pennsylvania Ave, Race St

    - Preferred to have street level bike lane.

    - Usual speed of the athletes is 10-20 mph/hr.

    - Connection with Oak St has been a concern.

I agree with Tony about the striped shading. I also suggest we:

    1. change the title to “Locations of Campus Hydration Stations” to be consistent across platforms
    2. change “# of simple…” to “# of stations equipped with glass filler”
    3. change “# of fancy…” to “# of stations equipped with bottle filler”

    Thanks,

    Jen

I have a problem with the legend. Numbers in the blue and orange dots represent?? Striped shading in the legend box also does not match the striped shading in the map (needs to be lighter).

  13. Met with Habitat for Humanity ReStore

    Associated Project(s):

On July 7, 2023, Daphne Hulse met with Habitat for Humanity ReStore Director Chad Hoffman and Executive Director Brandon Fischer to discuss participating in the 2024 collection event.

    • Daphne gave a brief overview of the history, and how the operations worked for the 2023 event
      • 8 undergraduate hall locations
      • All locations were shared between Goodwill and Salt & Light, so that hard items and soft items could be separated
      • Daphne indicated the desire to eliminate the "sharing" of containers and to instead have non-profts operate by locations, gathering all that is dropped off
    • Habitat for Humanity does not take any of the soft items listed: clothing, bedding, linens, shoes
      • Suggested that Salt & Light or Goodwill could pick up the soft items left at these locations
    • Would like furniture
      • Agree that it aligns better to target locations which would have furniture, more likely (family and graduate housing)
      • Do not want any damaged furniture
    • Closed Sundays and Mondays, so could not pick up on these days
