iCAP Team and iCAP Working Group Kickoff
Associated Project(s):We had a great iCAP Team and iCAP Working Group Kickoff on 9/16/21! During the event, we heard from iSEE Interim Director, Dr. Madhu Khanna, went through the team rosters, iCAP Procedures, iCAP 2020 and progress made thus far, and lastly summarized other resources that sustainability advocates should be aware of.
The iCAP Teams and iCAP Working Group are instrumental in helping campus advance and achieve our sustainability goals and we look forward to a great year!

June Tour at Allerton Park & Retreat Center

3 Ravens (108 South Charter, Monticello, IL 61856)Join us on a tour of Allerton!
We will be meeting near the outside patio of Greenhouse Cafe at Allerton Park & Retreat Center. During this tour, Derek Peterson, the Director of Allerton, will show us clean energy installations at the center and we will visit the compost toilet funded by the Student Sustainability Committee. The Clivus Multrum compost toilet system is installed at the park’s Schroth Trailhead, providing park volunteers, trail-hikers, and other visitors the ability to use the restroom in an environmentally sustainable and convenient manner without needing to travel all the way to the Visitor Center to do so.
Afterward, all are more than welcome to continue your visit to Allerton or join us for a quick bite at 3 Ravens in Monticello, IL!
Please note that coordinated transportation will not be provided for this event. If you would like to drive to the event, parking is available at multiple locations around the park.

Associated Project(s):This team focuses on the 2015 iCAP objectives for Chapter 6, as well as the food-related objective from Chapter 7, including:
6.2 Reduce municipal solid waste (MSW) going to landfills. This involves reducing nondurable goods purchases, effectively reusing materials, and recycling. In the latter category, campus will increase the diversion rate of MSW to 45% by FY20, 60% by FY25, and 80% by FY35, while also increasing the total diversion rate to 90% by FY20 and 95% by FY25. MSW sent to landfills should decline to 2,000 tons annually by 2035
6.3 Utilize landfills with methane capture
6.4 Appropriately staff Zero Waste efforts through the hiring of a full-time Zero Waste Coordinator.
7.4 Implement a project that examines the food service carbon footprint for Dining and other on campus food vendors, while increasing local food procurement to 40% by FY25

Associated Project(s):Attached are the minutes to the Zero Waste SWATeam meeting which took place on April 23, 2021. The meeting agenda was as follows:
- Elimination of thermal paper receipts.
- Education on Waste Management.
- Reduction of water bottle purchases in vending machines.
Potential initiatives which resulted from this conversation:
- Pursue sustainable receipt options to divert receipts from University waste stream.
- RA Training on waste management, with intent to educate students in university housing about sustainability.
- Creating a sustainability training video for buyers through the Purchasing office.
- Recommendation to create F&S standard to modify water fountain installations.
- Recommendation to do a behavioral assessment on water bottle purchasers.
- Recommendation to launch an education campaign for campus members on tap water quality.

"Where possible and applicable, campus restaurants and foodservices should adopt the use of a reusable containers instead of disposable or compostable containers for take-out food. Associated Project(s):The Zero Waste iCAP team made the ZW002 "Campuswide Office Depot GreenerOffice Delivery Service Enrollment" recommendation on 4/2/21:
Campus-wide Office Depot® GreenerOffice™ Delivery Service Enrollment would provide a recyclable and/or reusable delivery option for departmental purchase orders made through Office Depot. Deliveries will be made in paper bags, made of 40% post-consumer recycled content. Paper bags are reusable and recyclable. Paper bags will be transported in reusable plastic totes, made of 60% post-consumer recycled plastic, so deliveries will remain protected during transportation. These reusable totes would be picked up by Office Depot on the next delivery, such that the program is self-sustainable.
ZW002 Join NERC Government Recycling Demand Champions - Submitted
Associated Project(s):The Zero Waste iCAP Team made the following recommendation ZW002 Join Northeastern Recycling Council Government Recycling Demand Champions on 4/2/21:
University of Illinois to join the NERC Government Demand Champion Program.
- Free technical assistance in training, recognition, and tools to support efforts in the program. This will help us find more Post-consumer recycled (PCR) products by engaging with existing or identifying new vendors, provide training opportunities to department buyers, and/or provide the SWATeam with innovative engagement tools to increase buy-in across campus.
- Aligns with State of Illinois Procurement Code (ILCS 500/45-15 & ILCS 500/45-20)
- First University to join the program
- National recognition for sustainability commitment
- Support a circular economy
