  1. iCAP Portal Admin Meeting - September 29, 2023

    • Question about a TODO: "Collections page: Add image upload option". At a previous meeting we had this TODO, but what was the context? Was it to have a thumbnail for each Collection? Or a banner image? Or an image gallery?
    • Should we link to "Take Action" project from homepage?
      • Replace map link in Highlights?
      • Need to finish Take Action page content
    • SSC projects
      • May want to use this Archive of Funded Projects on old SSC site (2019) as a reference for showing SSC project info
      • Discussed using iCAP Portal projects for SSC projects page vs. maintaining own project pages directly on SSC website.
      • One possible challenge - SSC sometimes funds part of a project or provides funding for a period of time (e.g. 1 year) for a longer-term project, so only the project updates for that period of time are relevant, not all updates in perpetuity. How do we handle that?
      • Decided to start with map embed from Student Sustainability Committee Funded Projects collection, then look at adding card-based project embed as well.
    • Continue discussion of Fancy Page Layout (see the 4 mockups in the October 21, 2022 meeting notes)
    • Continue discussion of improving site's aesthetics
    • Archiving projects
      • Add "Archived" checkbox?
      • Add "Archived" to Visibility options?

      • Added link back to applicable full dashboard for each objective
      • Still investigating issue with some incorrect project updates showing up for objectives - I know why it's happening, just need to figure out the fix

    • Q: Can we limit access to menu selection for Projects to only certain users - e.g. iCAP Admins?
      • A: Yes! it turns out we'd already done that :-) iCAP Admins and iCAP Moderators can update the menu system, but iCAP Advocates cannot.
    • Implemented new search indexing algorithm to make search less rigid:
      • Will now find different versions of equivalent words (e.g. plurals and singular treated as the same word)
      • Omitting an apostrophe when searching will find versions of that word which include an apostrophe
      • Note: doesn't seem to understand that "bikes" and "bicycles" are equivalent, though - I can look into whether I can add in certain equivalent words. Are there others we'd like to see?

      • I would like to add to the agenda a brainstorm for ways we might be able to make a Project Page for Sustainability Experiential Learning projects.

         

        This idea is the basis of the Resilience Team economic analysis recommendation that  iWG passed. Members of the iCAP Education team are working with me.

         

        The project is basically like this:

         

        1. A needed project is identified by a community organization (e.g. life cycle analysis of a green technology for a new building),
        2. A Capstone class is identified (Eric Green’s Captstone) interested in experiential learning projects.
        3. A faculty mentor is named (Eric Green or other expert)
        4. Student teams form to work on the experiential learning project during their capstone class.
        5. Students work on the project, learn from it, deliver value to the “community client”
      • Anna Mehl from the Education iCAP Team and I are currently information gathering and brainstorming ways to create a page where we can provide information about future sustainability experiential learning projects.

    • Finished testing improved method for setting a Project's location in the menu system (dropdown list was becoming unmanageable). A couple cautionary notes:
      • You can switch from single-item dropdown lists to multi-item lists by dragging the bar below them to expand them. If you drag bar back up to switch back to single-item dropdown lists, future changes to the items still fill them in as multi-item lists. Just drag the bar back down to expand them again.
      • **Do not select self in last dropdown list** - it will appear to work fine for that node, but it actually loses its place in the hierarchy, which can be seen in its children. If you go back in to edit the node, you'll have to find its location again from scratch.

    The Engagement002 iCAP Portal Redesign was renamed to Engagement002 Take Action Weblink. On 11/11/22, the recommendation was transmitted to Madhu Khanna, Director of iSEE, with the following email. The iWG assessment is attached.

    Hello Dr. Khanna,

    The Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP) Working Group (iWG) reviewed recommendation Engagement002 from the Engagement iCAP Team about the iCAP Portal. The iWG discussed this and rather than changes to the database repository site of the iCAP Portal, the iWG recommends that iSEE’s communications team, in collaboration with the iCAP teams, take the steps recorded in the attached word document and listed here:

    1) For immediate action - Highlight a Student Action button to access the related “Action” page.  Make it consistent throughout the various websites, so the students/users know it is the same link.

    2) Look carefully at the iSEE campus sustainability page/site to streamline it and make it a lot more accessible for students, so they know how to take action and understand the progress we’ve made in this area.

    3) Develop an image-based site for campus sustainability engagement, with appropriate campus professionals and a student focus group that includes students with visual background and students with sustainability knowledge. Include time-based suggestions (if you have five minutes, if you have 30 minutes, if you have an hour, if you have an hour each week, etc.). Include suggestions for iSEE website, iCAP Portal, and related sites, as well as development of new landing page website.

    4) Reassess and renew the message and graphics of the iCAP web-presence on a regular basis (at least every five years).

    The Formal iCAP Procedures includes a section on campus unit responsibilities upon receipt of a recommendation, and we respectfully request your initial response to this recommendation by November 30, if possible.  If you have any questions regarding this recommendation, we are happy to discuss this with you further.
