Projects Updates for theme: Resilience

  1. Dominika Szal and Daphne Hulse continue the work on the waste survey

    Hi!

    I know the information might've been a lot, so here's just a quick summary regarding what is left to do:

    • Reach out to the following universities to ask questions:
      • University of Wisconsin-Madison
      • University of Iowa
      •  University of Minnesota
      • Rutgers
      • University of Maryland
      • Illinois State University (ISU)
      • Southern Illinois University in Carbondale (SIUC)
      • Eastern Illinois University (EIU)
      • University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS)
      • Michigan State University
    • See if we can get the contacts for UIS, SIUC, and EIU. I found the contact person for ISU, but I will need to find her email. I'll try to update the file if I can find it.
    •
    • Set up meetings with Ohio State University and University of Michigan. I've already contacted them before but haven't gotten back to them regarding Zoom scheduling.
    •
    • Any responses that you get regarding the survey should be filled out in the Big 10 spreadsheet located in this filepath: G:\Recycling & Waste\Big 10 Recycling

    I bolded the main contact that you should email for each respective university. If someone else ends up answering, please make note of their contact info. You can use/adjust the introduction I already have typed up in the Box file labeled "Big 10 Survey" when contacting people. If you want me to do some of the contacting, just let me know.

    Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions :)

    Associated Project(s):

    Air Quality Monitoring Station Project Updates:

    • The project is still underway as the initial phase of data collection is completed.
    • Collected air concentration and weather data at 15-minute’s intervals for a year. The data will be made public for use by campus.
    • Past data is being used to develop data filters to prevent outliers and data imputations in the proposed dashboard being implemented on PowerBI.
    • Public dashboard to be released to telecast live data through API access before the end of 2022.
    • Collected data being used for advanced research at Land Use Evolution and Assessment Lab (LEAM) to identify the potential for low-cost sensor deployment for urban scenario predictions.

  3. Geothermal Urbana-Champaign Project Update

    Associated Project(s):

    Geothermal Urbana-Champaign Project updates:

    • Geothermal Urbana-Champaign is an ongoing project with no end deadline.
    • John Freitag is the Project Consultant.
    • So far, 11 geothermal contracts have been signed for 47 tons of capacity.
    • During the first year of the Geothermal Program, the Midwest Renewable Energy Association MREA was involved in helping to start and run the program.

    The marketing resources document of the project is attached.

  4. Biodiversity Plan Project Update

    Associated Project(s):

    Project update from Gabriel Harper-Hagen:

    Over the course of the 2022 summer, Gabriel Harper-Hagen interviewed 45 members from the Champaign-Urbana region to understand more about the regions position on biodiversity. This process has created support for the plan from the community. Achievements and gaps were identified in the region along with barriers and recommendations to successfully integrate a biodiversity master plan. Photos of key aspects and sites were gathered. Strategies for achieving goals have been identified and are in the revising process. The plan is currently being constructed as a draft. Background research and information has been collected and used for support on the topic of urban biodiversity.

  5. ACES Study Abroad Carbon Offset Program Meeting

    Meredith Moore and Tyler Swanson of iSEE met with Alicia Freter of the ACES Study Abroad office on August 31st to discuss options for developing a carbon offset program for students studying abroad in the college of ACES.

    Highlights from the conversation include beginning the program by having students volunteer for iSEE in lieu of purchasing carbon offsets. Providing students studying abroad with Eco-Ambassador training was also discussed, with the idea that trained Eco-Ambassadors could lead iSEE sponsored events. The most equitable way to offset carbon emissions is still being discussed.

  6. Resilience iCAP Team September 2022 Meeting

    Subject: Champaign County Regional Environmental Framework Launch

    Hi CUUATS Technical Members,

    We, at the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, are excited to announce the launch of the Champaign County Regional Environmental Framework (REF).

    The REF is a centralized resource to help local planners, agencies, and engineers make informed decisions about transportation projects by providing data and analysis regarding ecological, cultural, and regulated-waste resources across Champaign County. As a preliminary screening tool, the REF allows users to identify compliance-triggering and ecologically vulnerable resources within a project location and incorporate them early into project planning, laying the groundwork for potential National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Illinois Dept. of Transportation (IDOT) environmental review processes.

    The REF can be accessed at the link provided. The Phase 1 report can be accessed here, through the REF website, or under Projects + Documents on the CCRPC website. We will be continuing to work on and make improvements to the website, as needed.

    Thanks,

    Rita
