    Good Morning,

    I hope you all are well. Thank you all for expressing interest in the resolution to create a Sustainability Gen-Ed requirement. Towards the beginning of the semester, I shared this resolution with each of you and most of you let me know that you would like to stay updated on the status of the resolution. Many of you have endorsed this resolution as faculty members, sponsored as members of ISG or UC senate, or provided additional support and guidance.   2. Spring 2021: iSEE Quarterly Update (iQ)

    The Spring 2021 iSEE Quarterly Update (iQ) was released with the following message from Madhu Khanna, the Interim Director of iSEE:

     

    Dear Colleagues,

    Attached, please find the Spring 2021 “iQ” – the quarterly update from the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment (iSEE).

    It has remained a busy time here on our campus, as we bolstered our outstanding Congress and Critical Conversation events with the addition of two experts — activist Catherine Coleman Flowers and nuclear expert Denia Djokić — who are serving as Levenick iSEE virtual resident scholars.

  3. NRES 285 Presentation Ceremony

    Each of the five teams presented their work and building recommendations at a presentation ceremony on May 14, 2021. Click here to view the recording.  

    Five buildings were assessed this semester by student teams of 3-5 people. These buildings were: 

    • Illini Union
    • Electrical and Computer Engineering 
    • Huff Hall
    • Bevier Hall
    • Armory

  4. updated list of needed student projects

    This is a list of projects that need students to work on.  It will be updated periodically by sustainability staff members, the last update was 5/14/21:

    • Tree Canopy Analysis: Work with F&S staff to complete a GIS analysis of the university's tree canopy, in support of the Tree Campus USA designation. This will include comparison to peer institutions and a presentation of the results and methodology to the Tree Campus Advisory Committee. Depending on time availability, it can also include an analysis of the local tree canopy, off campus. Contact Morgan White at mbwhite at illinois.edu.

  5. Sustainability Council Meeting 4-28-21

    The Sustainability Council met on April 28, 2021 and discussed the following:

  6. Careers in Sustainability Panel Discussion 4/9/21

    The Career Center hosted a Careers in Sustainability panel which included the following panelists: Roxina Kanchwala (Eco.Logic), John Sinclair (Wisconsin DNR), Andrew Rehn (Prairie Rivers Network), and Savannah Donovan (Urbana Parks District). 57 people were in attendance!   7. Example program at Ball State

    Now, while you are pursuing the Sustainability Excellence (SEA) credentialing, you can earn Ball State University's online graduate certificate in sustainability at the same time.

    The certificate consists of 12-credit and is offered entirely online. Each course is conveniently offered as a one-credit experience, taking just five weeks to complete. The skills and knowledge to be gained can be applied within the various employment opportunities arising from every degree completion. Cost varies on your state of residence and the number of courses you plan to take each semester. 

  8. Earth Month is Here!

    Earth Month is here! Can you believe it? I would like to first draw your attention to the iSEE Sustainability Calendar as a reference point for the many virtual and in-person events (maintaining COVID-19 safety and social distancing precautions) held this month and beyond. If you notice a missing event on the calendar, there is a link to submit an event yourself.

  9. Building Sustainability Checklist

    The attached building sustainability checklist will be used to guide the NRES 285 students in conducting their assessments of five campus buildings (Union, Armory, Huff Hall, ECE, and Bevier Hall). This checklist was reviewed by a variety of stakeholders, including iSEE staff and F&S employees: Morgan White, Brent Lewis, Shantanu Pai, Paul Foote, Stacey DeLorenzo, Beth Leitz, and Maddy Liberman.

    Interested in careers in sustainability? Join us to hear a panel discussion from industry professionals and learn how the field is changing and how to pursue sustainable careers.
