  2. Google Analytics changes to user counts on portal

    Ok, I added last year’s user stats, which looks like the only one we didn’t have yet. We had to migrate to a new version of Google Analytics last year, so the process for looking up the user count will change for FY24. Fortunately, there was overlap between the old Google Analytics system and the new one, so we could get all of FY23 on the old system and all of FY24 on the new one. The new system counts things a bit differently (for example, it focuses on Active Users rather than Total Users), and the numbers are often lower than the previous system, so we should probably expect a bit of a dip in the future. For example, for the period of time where both the old and new systems were collecting data (Jan 9, 2023 – Oct 4, 2023), the old system counted 35,311 users while the new system counted 27,206 users. At least that’s what I’m finding with what I think is the most equivalent user count. The new system is much more complicated to use (and powerful!) than the old system, so there may be another way to count the users that will give us something more similar to the old system. I’ll keep messing around with it to see if I can build a report that’s useful for counting users, and I’ll let you know what I come up with, Quinn.

     

    Additionally, the old system will be shut down on July 1, 2024, and all its historical data deleted, so if there’s any information we want to glean from it from before January 9, 2023, we should do that in the next couple months. I’ll put that discussion on the agenda for Friday’s meeting.

    All, Business as usual last week. We cleared some space up in the back to accommodate more for sale bikes, as we were out of room in the lobby.

    After this week, we will be closed all of Spring Break and afterwards reopen M – F.

    Will continue to grab bikes from the barn this week. Another unseasonably warm week ahead!

  9. 2024 Campus Bike Plan Meeting Held on 02/27/2024

    I had a meeting with Sarthak on February 27th, 2024 to discuss the working document of the 2024 Campus Bike Plan.

    Below are the notes of the meeting, mentioning the action items:

    • A weekly update on the working of the document to be uploaded on ICAP portal.
    • Review and edit the summary of the progress reports, if needed, written by Kejsi and Ethan.
    • Review the section for Equity and Inclusion in Chapter 3: Goals and Objectives.
    • Chapter 2: Stakeholders
      • Add DRES as a stakeholder.
    • Chapter 4: Equity and inclusion
      • Add about parking for tandem bikes, E-bikes.
      • Add the circuit map created, showing the route taken by wheelchair athletes.
      • Mention the meeting with Adam and the concerns regarding the infrastructure for wheelchair athletes.
      • Describe the routes taken, their existing condition, issues and proposed interventions.
      • Add description about the condition of Peabody Drive and the proposed intervention.
      • Add description about the condition of Pennsylvania Avenue till Lincoln Avenue and the proposed intervention.
      • Mention about coordinating with TDM and Capital Programs at Facilities & Services for street level improvements along the routes mentioned in circuit map.
    • Chapter 5: Network
      • Proof read and propose changes wherever necessary.
    • Chapter 7: Additional Considerations
      • Proof read and propose changes wherever necessary for Education section and beyond.
    • Bike rack inventory maintenance audit:
      • Fill in the remaining details and complete the sheet.
      • Visit locations of bike racks with blurry or no photos or where the rack capacity is not mentioned.
      • Classify different types of bike racks based on their condition and maintenance level and create separate pdf’s for each.

  10. Volunteer Opportunity: Fighting Illini, Fighting Waste Basketball Events

    Fighting Illini, Fighting Waste

    Volunteers are needed for two University of Illinois basketball games host to enhanced recycling operations for Fighting Illini, Fighting Waste. Both contests are heavily-anticipated home finales at State Farm Center (SFC): Illinois women’s basketball vs. Nebraska on Sunday, March 3; and men’s basketball vs. Purdue on Tuesday, March 5.

    Volunteers will be asked to help educate and encourage fans to recycle their bottles and cans at SFC prior to and during those games, as well as hand-pick recyclables left on floors, seats, and in cupholders after the games. Sign up here: https://forms.illinois.edu/sec/1852876547. Nitrile gloves and a green volunteer t-shirt will be provided to volunteers.

    The Fighting Illini, Fighting Waste initiative is a partnership between Coca-Cola; the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics; the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment; and Facilities & Services. Volunteers collected recyclables at previous basketball and football games in the past two years.

    Establishing a university-wide zero waste culture is a top sustainability objective of the Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP).   12. Green Research Program documents - drafts

    -    The green research committee charge letter,

    -    Following the meeting with leadership, the presentation developed and delivered to the iSEE Sustainability Council and sub-council. 

    Also attached is a copy of the revised budget which eliminated FY24 and added FY29. In addition to student labor, other costs that could potentially be part of the SSC grant application are the training software subscription, marketing & promotional materials, and web presence.
     

    Also attached is a draft position description for the Green Research Coordinator position based on the committee report. It is anticipated that this will and should be civil service in the Program Coordinator classification. As such, education requirements have been written to match the classification which deviates from prior discussions.

  13. Weekly Update: Busy, M-F hours after Spring break

    All, Business as usual last week. We were especially busy on Friday with a wait for stand time. Today will probably be hopping, too. Warm weather and all. Should cool down by end of week and allow us to finish some for-sale bikes, as spring seems to be coming sooner this year. Only a couple more weeks before we’re open M – F. Be good to get the Tue/Thurs crew some public facing time, as they’ve been squirreled away working on our off-days.

    Last semester when I came by LAR/Allen to do a tour of the recycling system there (during which we discussed the blue bag transition), one of the staff mentioned that there are a particular type of vacuums used that utilize lithium ion batteries, that then must be discarded.

     

    Would it be possible to get a specific URL link or photo of what the vacuum / batteries look like? We may have found a vendor willing to responsibility dispose of these (recycle them).

I recently learned that our Housing department uses these types of batteries fairly regularly for a piece of cleaning equipment, and once they are used they have to discard them and replace with new ones.

    Happy New Year to you and the U of I team!  It’s great to hear from you.  We absolutely do take these types of batteries and would be happy to recycle these for you.  Just a few quick questions that will help determine the shipment approach:

     

    1. How many of these batteries do you currently have on hand that need to be recycled? (count / wattage – info needed because we have a 300Wh limit per box) I will have to reach out to other areas to see if they have batteries to dispose of. I am only of aware of one at the moment but I am sure there are more in other buildings.
    2. What is the frequency per semester / year that you think you would need recycling? (so that we can sort out the sequence that we send boxes and expect shipment back) I would say once a year pickup would work.
    3. Do you have a safe place on campus where you are aggregating these batteries right now as they reach end-of-life, or is that also a solution you are looking for? We keep them in the foremen office or equipment room on a shelf.

  15. 2/23/24 Event

    At Friday's Illini Lights Out event, 3,686 light bulbs were shut off that otherwise would have been left on all weekend, saving $560.80 in energy costs. This also prevented 4.4 metric tons of CO2 equivalent from entering the atmosphere, which is equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions from 500 gallons of gasoline being consumed. That's a huge impact!

  18. Discussion about updating iCAP recommendations - February 21, 2024

    Miriam Keep, Sarthak Prasad, Christina Tran, and Michael McKelvey met to discuss a proposed structure for updating iCAP recommendations.

    Agenda

    • Discussed structure outlined in iCAP Portal Admin Meeting - February 2, 2024 under Discussion/Decisions section plus attached file
    • Christina walked through the Figma Recommendations mockup she created, showing the workflow of the current approach and the proposed new approach. Notable changes:
      • Remove duplication of effort by providing only one place to enter information about a new Recommendation status
      • Once basic structure is in place, adding new Recommendation updates will require minimal extra work
      • Current Recommendation status and history can be automatically shown in multiple places across the iCAP Portal, either for individual Recommendations or all Recommendations under a Team

    Discussion

    • Miriam requested a "Next Steps" text field on Project Updates (in the Recommendations tab), visible only to people with iCAP roles (i.e. clerk and above)
    • Discussed using Tasks section in Project Updates to keep track of pending tasks related to Project Updates (especially helpful for Recommendations). Pending Tasks are Project Updates which have a due date and no completion date. See Pending Tasks page.

    Questions/Proposals

    • Propose allowing a Team to have no associated Theme. This currently only impacts the iWG Recommendations Team, since there is no Implementation theme.

    The Engagement iCAP Team met on 02/21/2024 to touch base on the ongoing Sustainability Literacy Survey. The Engagement iCAP Team is currently collaborating with other iCAP teams to generate questions to include in the survey. The group also discussed member collaboration with other universities to survey residence hall sustainability recommendations. Other upcoming iSEE events were also discussed.
