  3. Engagement SWATeam Meeting

    The Engagement SWATeam met on Friday, March 26 to refine current proposed recommendations, including a General Education Board Sustainability Task Force and Code of Conduct revision. The team plans to submit its General Education Board recommendation by Tuesday, March 30 in time for the next iWG meeting. Additional information on the meeting is included in the attached meeting minutes.

  4. Applications for SSC Student-Led Projects Under $10,000

    SSC is now accepting applications for Student-Led Projects Under $10,000 for its first funding cycle of the semester. The deadline for this initial round of funding is March 31. Join one of the virtual working group meetings on 3/22/2021 or 3/24/2021 for help with applying!

  5. Energy iCAP Team Meeting Minutes from 3-10-21

    The Energy iCAP Team met on March 10th, 2021 to discuss next steps on a recommendation for a Comprehensive Energy Master Plan after F&S has published their Energy Management Plan that aims for a 50% reduction in energy utilization by 2026. The team also discussed recommendations for a Green Labs Program and ways to manage space usage on campus. Given how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed in-person activites and created a hybrid workforce, the team believes it will be important to study underused spaces on campus to reduce building-level energy use.

  6. First Team Meeting for Building Envelope Pilot Project

    Carbon Credit Purchasing Program (C2P2) with Second Nature

    The Building Envelope Pilot Project team held the first of three large meetings planned for the Building Envelope Pilot Project, which is funded in Spring 2021 with the SSC and Carbon Credit Sales funding. F&S, ICRT, and a student representative met to confirm the scope for the thermal imaging and blower door testing. We started with introductions of the team members and a general voerview of the pilot project.  Then ICRT leadership provided background information about ICRT, envelope commissioning benefits and processes, and initial expectations for the requirements to complete this project at the Transportation Building. At the end of the call, we defined next steps for getting the thermoimaging vendor on contract, specifying the equipment needs for the blower door testing, and scheduling the actual testing day. A tentative date to consider is April 13th, which is a non-instructional day this spring.

  8. The Student Sustainability Committee Coffee Hour

    The SSC will organize a virtual Energy Working Group Coffee Hour. This event will be an excellent chance for students, staff, faculty, and community members to discuss their own views on campus and the community world when it comes to energy.  We hope you'll be there! Likewise, if you are interested in joining future working groups events for the Coffee Hour, please see the attachment.

  10. Follow up - Environmental Justice TED Talk

    Good afternoon, Thank you for registering for our first TED Talk: Eco Edition event, focusing on environmental justice! It was wonderful to see many of you in attendance. Your ideas, input, and questions led to a very thought-provoking and meaningful discussion.

    We encourage you to share the TED Talk  with your friends, family members, and peers. Continue the discussion on this important topic and keep initiating conversations – even when they are difficult. Consider joining Waste Reduction @ Illinois | Facebook. This is a great community forum for sharing ideas and continuing sustainability discussions.

    Leah Courtney did a fantastic job as our first host of this TED Talk series. We have attached Leah’s presentation for anyone who would like to refer to it as a resource. Keep an eye out for our March TEDTalk: Eco Edition which will focus on the topic of plastics.   11. Environmental Justice TED Talk: Eco-Edition

    Join us for iSEE's first TED Talk: Eco-Edition! This month’s theme is "Environmental Justice."

    Together, participants will view a prerecorded TED Talk presented by David Lammy, the first Black Member of Parliament to hold the Justice post in British Parliament, titled "Climate Justice Can't Happen Without Racial Justice." Afterward, all are invited to participate in a guided discussion and roundtable.

    Our host is Leah Courtney, a sophomore at U of I studying Civil and Environmental Engineering with minors in Spanish and the Sustainability, Energy, and Environment Fellows Program. A student member of the Zero Waste Sustainability Working Advisory Team, Leah is passionate about the environment and social justice.

  14. iSEE Give Pulse Channel Created

    Kate Gardiner and Keilin Jahnke, members of the Engagement SWATeam, have created a channel for iSEE under the GivePulse University of Illinois channel. They have incorporated opportunities such as the CU Mobile Farms project and Red Oaks Rain Garden, but are seeking more events and opportunities to include on the channel.

    Hello! 

    We are writing to invite you, on behalf of your environmental group, to attend a virtual “Meet and Greet” event on Monday, February 8, from 4-5 p.m. The purpose is to come together to discuss the function, structure, and purpose of the Student Sustainability Leadership Council (SSLC) and relaunch the group. This organization is designed to provide an opportunity for sharing, collaboration, and centralized communication to streamline campus sustainability outreach and programs between student environmental groups and iSEE (Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment). SSLC can also function as a way for RSOs to receive help and support for projects and outreach.

    Key topics that will be discussed: 

    • What is the purpose of the SSLC? 
    • How can the SSLC benefit student groups and what is the benefit of participation?
    • Who should be a member of the SSLC?
    • How should the SSLC be structured and led?

    Your input and participation are essential to the success of this group and anyone is welcome to attend. We hope to see you at this discussion on February 8. Let us know if you have any questions, comments, or feedback in the meantime. See you soon!

    Climate migrations are often characterized as moving people from low to higher income countries, or from rural to urban areas (particularly into slums or low-income neighborhoods).  However, climate change will endanger cities across the globe.  Is this a realistic concern and what impact could it have on migratory flows? What role will cities play in climate migrations (for good or for bad)?

  20. Scope Change for Pollinator Awareness Sign

    The following scope change was submitted to SSC for the Pollinator Awareness Sign:

    Originally, there were no signs at all on campus showing how pollinator friendly the campus is. Now there are four; and the University is now considered part of Bee Campus USA. Now we want to add a bigger sign outlining the bee campus student organization, progress the campus has made, and changes the university implemented to be more pollinator friendly. This sign will include an acknowledgment of the SSC funding for the signs and for several of the pollinator friendly plantings around campus.

    The funding does not need to be increased, but we are requesting a schedule extension of one year.  The design of the sign is anticipated to take at least one month, so that students can assist with the content development, then the sign will be ordered, and since it may be winter –time when the sign is ready for installation, we may not be able to install it until the spring thaw. Please approve an extension to May 2021.
